The Antiphons. What are they and why should we sing them? The propers of the Mass (the parts that change each week) are the second most important parts of the Mass to be sung, after the Ordinary. The antiphons and their accompanying psalm verses that occur at the Entrance, Offertory, and Communion are prescribed in the Missal and are linked scripturally, thematically or theologically to the readings of the day. On certain feasts and holy days, they are especially complimentary. On some days, like Holy Thursday, entire hymns have been composed from the antiphons (in this case, the Ubi Caritas). The singing of the antiphons and their psalm verses fell out of fashion sometime after the implementation of the reforms of the Second Vatican Council, despite the intentions of the council to foster full and active participation in Mass. Unclear language in the General Instruction of the Roman Missal left the doors of interpretation very wide open, and a lack of adequate settings of the newly translated text left many churches borrowing the Protestant tradition of singing hymns in these places. (Which, if you recall, was borrowed from the Catholic practice of hymnody at the liturgy of the hours). Luckily, in the 3rd Edition of the Roman Missal (2010-11), all things have been clarified and the propers have found their way back home. Many beautiful settings of the propers in English have been composed and we endeavor to sing more of them. At Masses with the choir, the communion antiphon and its verses will usually be sung, followed by a choral piece during the reception of Holy Communion. Feel free to join in on the repeated refrains, or simply let the poetry of the text and the beauty of the music center you for the reception of Holy Communion.
Our Lady of Lourdes World Day of the Sick on Feb. 11th - St. Mary Parish has 2 distinct tributes to Our Lady of Lourdes on the church grounds. The first tribute would be one of the stained glass windows in the church. The story of Our Lady of Lourdes is as follows. In 1858 Mary appeared 18 times at Lourdes, in the Pyrenees Mountains in southern France, to Bernadette Soubirous, a fourteen-year-old peasant girl. A spring of fresh water, which appeared at the site, feeds the baths at the shrine to the present day. Many miraculous healings have been reported after people have bathed in the waters. The fact that there is no spread of infection, even though no sanitary precautions are taken when people with all sorts of diseases take baths there, is a marvel in itself. There is a medical bureau at Lourdes at which any qualified doctor can come to check alleged cures. The second tribute would be the Prayer Garden at the Grotto, which can be seen left of the church from Route 34. To the right side of the cave, a statue of our Lady stands high on the lava stone wall, and within the stone cave visitors can light a votive candle. A statue of Bernadette kneels gazing up in prayerful devotion at our Lady. The Grotto, inspired by a grotto at Notre Dame, hugs the hillside surrounded by low juniper, rhododendrons, azalea, forsythia, dogwood and holly. In front of the Grotto is a fountain and wooden pews for contemplative prayer and reflection. Come for a visit.

The annual celebration of World Marriage Day is on Sunday, February 9, 2020 and National Marriage Week is from February 7 through February 14.
At this special time of year, we recall that it was at a wedding, a joyful celebration of marriage, that Jesus performed his first miracle. In Cana of Galilee he launched his ministry and started on his road to the cross. Marriage is so fundamental to our faith that it is often called the primordial sacrament. Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time. We speak of the paschal mystery in terms of dying and rising. Perhaps the gospel this Sunday offers another way of putting it: taste or be thrown out; be a light that shines, hidden is no good for anyone. Practically speaking, this might mean that we get involved in some of the visible parish ministries, not only liturgical ones but perhaps social outreach or tutoring one of the school children. Maybe being salty or shining simply means that we take stock of our already too-busy days and reflect on what has value or meaning for the good of others and what has become habit to no real avail. Discipleship always involves ongoing discernment. Our RCIA candidates continue their journey toward the Easter Sacraments. Let us continue to pray for them and their families. The month of February is a time for us to reflect on the great gift of God’s love present in the Sacrament of Marriage. The love of a man and a woman is a revelation of God’s love. Through their love and openness to God’s grace, family life is another way in which God’s presence is made known. The Sacrament of Marriage is not something that ought to be taken for granted. It deserves the very best we can offer as we prepare couples for this sacrament, and as we support married couples throughout their life journey. Let us continue to pray for women and men who commit themselves to the noble vocation of married life. I hope that some from our parish
community will participate in the Catholic Men’s Rally. It is a time for men as well as their sons to discover how God is calling them to share their faith in the family and the workplace. Later this month, Sunday 23 February to be exact at the 12:00 noon Mass we will conclude with a Eucharistic Procession through the nave of the church and place the monstrance with the Most Blessed Sacrament on the Main Altar for adoration and prayer throughout the afternoon. It has been a goal for some years now to schedule Eucharistic Days throughout the year. The weekend before the beginning of Lent seems to be a good time. It is my hope that our parishioners and others throughout the co-hort might avail themselves of this opportunity. Further details shall be in the coming bulletins. The afternoon will conclude with Vespers (Evening Prayer) and Eucharistic Benediction. We will also need some guardians at prayer throughout the afternoon to insure that the Most Blessed Sacrament is never unattended during adoration. During my recent holiday, which was very restful by the way, there were a few glitches. I apologize for these should anyone have been inconvenienced. I do affirm the leadership of our parish staff for addressing these glitches and providing the very best for our parishioners and guests. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in our prayer. Michele Lawson Wig Warriors Maureen S. Konopko Foundation Unfortunately, too many families have someone dear to them that have or had cancer. Most of us are “paralyzed” with fear. Michele Lawson took action in honor of her mom’s courageous battle with cancer. Michele became a volunteer with the American Cancer Society, and then started the Wig Warriors Maureen S. Konopko Foundation, whose beautiful motto is “Empowering women to navigate the cosmetic side effects of cancer treatments.” As the owner of “Hair & Co.” in Red Bank, Michele and her wonderful staff provide many free services for cancer patients – such as: wigs, scarves, head wraps, head coverings, hair cutting & shaving and make-up classes – to boost the spirits of these women! Michele is going to share some of her memorable experiences with the Martha Mary Guild on Wednesday, Feb. 12. All are welcome to come to the Spiritual Center at 11:30 a.m. for the rosary (dedicated to cancer patients this month). BYOL (Bring Your Own Lunch) will be in Madonna Hall at noon, with refreshments provided by the Guild. Michele will begin around 12:30. RETROUVAILLE: REDISCOVER THE LOVE IN YOUR MARRIAGE Tens of thousands of couples have healed their marriages through Retrouvaille (Retro-VIE).
