Macirowski Pastoral Coordinator for Worship & Music / Principal Organist Worship@stmaryscoltsneck.org Music@stmaryscoltsneck.org Saint Valentine, officially known as Saint Valentine of Rome, is a third-century Roman saint widely celebrated on February 14 and commonly associated with "courtly love.” Although not much of St. Valentine's life is reliably known, and whether or not the stories involve two different saints by the same name is also not officially decided, it is highly agreed that St. Valentine was martyred and then buried on the Via Flaminia to the north of Rome. One common story is that in one point of his life, as the former Bishop of Terni, Narnia and Amelia, he was on house arrest with Judge Asterius. While discussing religion and faith with the Judge, Valentine pledged the validity of Jesus. The judge immediately put Valentine and his faith to the test. St. Valentine was presented with the judge's blind daughter and told to restore her sight. Placing his hands onto her eyes, Valentine restored the child's vision. Judge Asterius was humbled and broke all the idols around his house, fasted for three days and became baptized, along with his family and entire 44 member household. The romantic nature of Valentine's Day may have derived during the Middle Ages, when it was believed that birds paired couples in mid-February, and the date possibly created to overpower the pagan holiday, Lupercalia. Whoever he was, Valentine did really exist, because archaeologists have unearthed a Roman catacomb and an ancient church dedicated to St. Valentine. Saint of the Week: Apollonia, Virgin and Martyr, died 249 St. Dionysius wrote an account of the heavy persecution of Christians by the pagan populace in the city of Alexandria in the last year of the reign of the Emperor Philip. An enraged mob killed several older Christians who would not blaspheme God or worship the false gods. Many other Christians fled the city, leaving all of their possessions behind rather than renounce their faith. St. Dionysius noted that he knew of none who yielded to the pressure. Among the Christians martyred at this time was Apollonia, a deaconess. The pagans first beat her severely, knocking all of the teeth out of her head. Then, dragging her out of the city, they lit a great fire and threatened to throw her into it unless she blasphemed God. Apollonia asked for a moment’s delay which, interpreted by the pagans as a sign that she was considering it, was granted. When she was freed, Apollonia threw herself onto the flames. Read more HERE.

The causes of falls in the elderly include such things as muscle weakness, poor balance and vision, lack of confidence at moving about, and the effect of medication, walking on uneven ground, over-reaching, or over stepping. Tai Chi is a low impact, weight bearing exercise; and with regular Tai Chi practice, it helps build internal strength, reduce falls, and improve the quality of life. Barbara Schaflin, certified instructor of Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention; Diabetes; Memory; and Rehabilitation/Rejuvenation, has taught 103 participants this past year in the various disciplines. This is the early, discounted registration for summer RE classes. Please register early to ensure that you get your first choice. It is first come first serve and classes will be closed when numbers are met.
7th and 8th grade Mini-retreat Dates and times have been set for the mandatory parent/student mini-retreat The Liturgy of The Word Dismissal is the practice of having the children, ages 4-12, leave the Sunday assembly during the Liturgy of the Word and gather in a separate environment to engage in the Liturgy of the Word at a level more appropriate to the children’s understanding. The purpose of making the liturgical experience more accessible to the assembled children is to nourish their faith experience and to affirm their value as important participants in the liturgy of God’s Word.
We will resume this program on 30 January 2022, 10am mass Please RSVP here so we can get an idea of how many children are interested. We will add masses as the need arises. We are still in need of a few more parent/ parishioner volunteers to help facilitate. Please call the RE office or submit your information here if you are interested.

Both retreats will begin with 12:00 Mass and ending at approximately 3:00pm.

Mike – and the Martha Mary Guild is looking forward to the February meeting on Wednesday, the 9th. Fr. Mike was ordained in 1973 and has served in the diocese of Trenton since then. He was at St. Mary’s in Middletown for 10 years and we are happy that he has “made his way” to St. Mary’s Colts Neck!

Father will concentrate on our Catholic culture and Lent (which begins on March 2, 2022) and RCIA, which is the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. Many of us have heard of RCIA, but never really understood the process. Fr. Mike will enlighten everyone and answer any questions that arise. Please note that the rosary is prayed in the “former chapel” at 11:30 a.m. This is a lovely tradition that the Guild established several years ago and we look forward to many participants. BYOL (Bring Your Own Lunch) is at noon and Fr. Mike will begin at 12:30. Every month, the Guild collects items for various organizations and it is heartwarming to see the kindness of our members in the huge amount that always appears! In February, we will be collecting toiletries for Fulfill and we thank you for your generosity.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate The Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The dynamic of the first reading and gospel is theophany—call. This suggests that in our own lives we must be tuned into God’s theophanies for each time God makes divine presence known there is a call to follow. If we look for shaking door frames, billowing smoke, and large catches of fish we will miss God’s theophanies! The gospel invites us to look to the simple manifestations of holiness that indicate the presence of God, for example, in the generosity of so many volunteers, in the faithfulness of husbands and wives, in the unselfishness of pastoral workers, in the uncomplaining suffering of the sick, in the gracious wisdom of the elderly. Our yes response to the call within these theophanies is to imitate these good behaviors and by doing so we extend God’s reign. Living the paschal mystery means we respond to God’s call—fulfill our baptismal commitment— in these little, everyday things. The astonishing thing about this good news is that we are all made worthy simply because God calls. We continue to collect blessed palm that you may have in your home as we prepare for the Lenten Season. The receptacles will be located in the Narthex (Gathering Area) of the Church for your convenience.

Our Holy Father Pope Francis has requested listening sessions be held throughout the world. Our parish will do so later this month. Please consult the bulletin for more details. Plan to be a part of this historic consultation. The blizzard of last weekend was a challenge for us and I am grateful that there was no loss of life in our area. We did not experience widespread power outages either. We were able to clear the campus in order to provide mass at 12:00 noon last Sunday. We were able to make the call on Friday Evening. Thanks again for your patience and cooperation.

VENERATION OF THE RELICS OF SAINT PADRE PIO Hosted by Church of Saint Leo the Great. Friday, February 25 and Saturday, February 26, 2022. SCHEDULE: Friday - 6pm Prayer Service with public veneration of the Relics until 8pm, ending with a Prayer Service. Saturday - 8am Solemn Mass with the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick followed by public veneration of the Relics until 11am, ending with a Prayer Service.
