Guidelines of the Universal Church The Catholic Church in the United States asks of us as baptized Catholics to observe the following: The days of fast (only one full meal) and abstinence (no meat) are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. All other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence (no meat). Fast—consume only one full meal. Water may be taken throughout the day Abstinence– consume no meat; this obligation prohibits the eating of meat but not eggs, milk products or condiments of any kind, even though made from animal fat.
Baptized Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast and those from the age of 14 are also obliged to abstain. All are encouraged to embrace these practices as part of our spiritual journey.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate The First Sunday of Lent. The first two readings this Sunday suggest that our entry into the desert and the injunction to proclaim the gospel are the consequence of baptism. In the baptismal waters we are plunged into the death of Christ to rise to the risen life that renews the earth. Baptism is our entry into the death/resurrection mystery of Christ and our entry in Lent and Easter. We begin Lent by reminding ourselves that we are a baptized people; at the end of Lent we renew our baptismal promises at the Easter Vigil. Christ led the way; we only need to make the choice (effort) to follow. This weekend our 40 day journey through the Season of Lent begins and concludes sundown on Holy Thursday. It is my hope that we make the most of this grace-filled opportunity. Abstaining (giving up) some thing can be a very fruitful exercise. Choosing to do something can also be very fruitful. I encourage you to try one of each, giving up and doing something extra. I invite you to consider receiving the Holy Eucharist more frequently by coming to Mass for the Sunday Sabbath and throughout the week. I would like us to consider this as a communal act for Lent: Namely, as a worshipping community coming to Mass on time; that is, 5 minutes before the start of Mass; using the lavatories at that time; taking your place in the pew prior to the priest presider beginning with the sign of the cross, so that we are not climbing over those who have arrived on time and observing social/physical distancing during this pandemic. Considering this would be a great act of respect for the sacred action we are celebrating when we pray the Mass. I realize this can only happen if you make it a priority. I offer this suggestion as a way for us to grow in our respect for God and one another. Remember that we depart Mass during Lent in reverent silence. Give it a try…who knows?
I listen to and learn from so many who share their hopes and concerns with me. One of the issues has been the on-going dispensation from in person participation at Sunday Mass. We are grateful to His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton for his compassionate care. Many continue limited outings and remain home and safe from others. That is good. However, I also hear how there are those among us who are venturing out of the home for various activities including restaurants and shopping and going to the gym etc…while choosing not to participate in the Sunday Mass. We continue to offer four Masses per weekend (except when snow forecasts make it difficult to do so) in order that there is ample space for congregants. I write this as an invitation. I write this to prompt reflection especially of those who are parenting and forming children. How are we teaching our children and young people when we are returning to various aspects of life in safe ways, but continue to show through our actions that it is not safe to come to Mass regularly on Sunday? It is my hope that this Lenten Season might be an opportunity for discernment and a return to weekly Sunday Mass and reception of the Most Holy Eucharist. Thank you for your openness to the message of His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton presented this past weekend via video messaging. The 2021 Annual Catholic Appeal aids our bishop in serving the needs throughout our four county Diocese of Trenton. To all of those who have made your gift/pledge…THANK YOU! Lenten Observances Fasting - Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days are fasting, when our daily meals should be smaller, to equal the total of one full meal throughout the course of the day. Abstinence - To refrain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday and Fridays during Lent, as well as Good Friday. Giving up - It is common practice to make a Lenten sacrifice of something we take pleasure in - commonly people give up chocolate, alcohol, and so on, but in modern times some have taken to the idea of giving up social media for Lent. Taking on - Sometimes in place of, but ideally in addition to, people may elect to do something they haven’t or make an increase in something positive. For example, increasing charitable contributions, or volunteering in the community. Stations of the Cross - Privately or communally praying the stations is a common Lenten observance, as we follow the journey of Christ through to his crucifixion. Whatever you decide to do this Lent, make it a prayerful one, with hope for a joyful Easter.

2021-2022 Religious Education Families must be registered active parishioners whose children have been in the Religious Education program for at least one year (with the possible exception of first grader families). This includes the New Parishioner Orientation meeting. Copies of each student’s Baptismal certificate and record of previously completed Religious Education classes (if applicable) and sacraments must be received by the office when registering in our program for the first time. Please be aware that children entering grades 2-8 in Sept 2021 must have completed and passed their previous Religious Education grade work before they can be registered for the next school year. Additionally registration/class enrollment will not be processed until all paperwork is in the office. Returning Students who do not have a copy of their Baptismal Certificate on file in the office WILL NOT be secured in a class for the 2021 - 2022 term.

ACA in Action! The following is an example of a ministry made possible through the generous support of the ACA. Catholic Social Services Diocesan Parish Counseling Services: Parishioners have access to short term counseling (up to 6 sessions) at locations throughout the Diocese. The program was developed by Catholic Charities and the Diocese of Trenton. Licensed counseling professionals are available to help parishioners through difficult issues such as marital problems, raising children, eldercare, bereavement or the stress of job loss that can be successfully addressed by brief counseling support. Pastors and parish priests of the Diocese can refer parishioners to the parish counseling services. Parish Emergency Assistance Program (PEAP): Emergency financial assistance to individuals through the parish and coordinated by Catholic Charities is available. Diocesan Social Service Workshops: Information and resources to parishes and Catholic Social Service agencies are available to enhance Diocesan Catholic Social Service. Home Health Nursing Program: Free, in home nursing and home health services are available to Seniors in Greater Trenton through Mt. Carmel Guild. Emergency Assistance: People in Mercer County are able to receive food through Mt. Carmel Guild. Over 30,000 received food through this program last year. The model Jesus gave us for “these forty days” was his own experience in the desert and the temptations that followed him there where he encountered Satan face to face. And yet, Jesus, there in the desert — alone, fasting and in intense prayer — beat back the devil and triumphed over temptation, as strong and as unrelenting as it was throughout those forty days. We enter the desert of Lent like Jesus, led by the Holy Spirit, to face our devils, our temptations head on. But we are not alone. The Lord Jesus Christ is with us. And so, too, is the Church, the entire community of faith observing Lent. The days of FAST (only one full meal) and ABSTINENCE (no meat) are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. No dispensations are granted on these solemn days except for reason of sickness or those provided in canon law below. The pastor of a parish has the authority to give a dispensation to individual parishioners in his parish. The Bishop alone has the authority to dispense groups of Catholics but only for a serious reason. 2. Those who are automatically dispensed from fast and abstinence regulations outside the age limits noted below include: the physically or mentally ill, especially individuals suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes. Also included in the dispensation are women who are pregnant or nursing. In all cases, common sense should prevail and ill persons should not further jeopardize their health by fasting (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops). Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to FAST (only one full meal) as above. From the age of 14, people are also obliged to ABSTAIN (no meat: this obligation prohibits the eating of meat, but not eggs, milk products or condiments of any kind, even though made from animal fat). The obligation to observe the laws of fast and abstinence is a serious one for Catholics. Failure to observe one penitential day in itself is not considered a serious sin. It is the intentional failure to observe any penitential days at all, or a substantial number of penitential days, that must be considered a serious matter. The obligation, the privilege really, of receiving the Eucharist at least once a year — often called “Easter duty” — for those in the state of grace should still be fulfilled during the period from the First Sunday of Lent, April 20-21, 2021 to Trinity Sunday, May 30, 2021. However, the Church’s law does permit this precept to be fulfilled at another time during the year when there is a just cause. I want to encourage all Catholics, especially those conscious of serious sin, to go to confession and to make use of the sacrifices and traditions that have always been part of our Lenten practices in the Church. We do, indeed, fast and pray with the Lord Jesus and with our fellow Catholics. May this Lent be a time of penance leading to grace and joy for us all at Easter.
