Most people think of it as a time to prepare for the coming of Christ at Christmas; and while this is true, it is also a time to prepare for His coming at the end of time. Many of the Advent readings and hymns we sing during Advent and Christmastime allude to the two comings of Christ. One of the hymns that is often sung during Advent, The King Shall Come When Morning Dawns. In the same hymn, the author speaks of the birth of Christ, but also of the return: Not, as of old, a little child To suffer and to die, But crowned with glory like the sun That lights the morning sky. Another hymn, Savior of the Nations Come, speaks of the destiny of the Christ to lead those who have passed and believe in him to eternal glory: From the Father forth he came and returneth to the same, captive leading death and hell high the song of triumph swell! This is also a time of year when special attention is paid to the Blessed Virgin Mary, with the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception on December 8, The Feast of our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12, and on the Octave of Christmas, the Solemnity of Theotokos, Mary the Mother of God. It is important during this time of preparation to not only prepare our hearts for the coming of the infant Jesus, the Son of Mary and Word Incarnate, but also the Redeemer, King of Kings for all eternity.

We have been advised that socializing before or after the Mass inside or outside is to be discouraged; clergy are not permitted to greet parishioners before or after the Mass. Sacrament of Penance Sunday December 6, 2020 2nd grade students and their families arrive prior to 3 pm, the sacrament will be offered beginning at 3 pm sharp. All other parishioners are asked to arrive according to the following: 3:15 Last name A-H 3:30 Last name I-P 3:45 Last name Q-Z Enter only through the narthex, as on Sundays. Masks must be worn and hands sanitized. Proceed down the left side of the church,
maintaining physical distance and silence. Penitents will be called into the chapel and directed to a priest confessor. The sacrament of penance will occur. Exit the chapel through the opposite door, and proceed into the church for your penance. Kneel in a pew, say the Act of Contrition, and pray your penance. When you have finished, please maintain silence and exit through the narthex.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Second Sunday of Advent. Some success John was: he diverted attention from himself to Jesus and ended up beheaded for his efforts! Proclaimed repentance, prepared for Jesus, died— this is the pattern of John’s life. Actually, it’s the pattern of Jesus’ life, too: proclaimed, prepared the way to the Father, died. Further, it’s the pattern of our own paschal mystery living: proclaim the gospel of repentance, prepare for Christ’s second coming, die to ourselves. Our being baptized “with the Holy Spirit” enables us to do the work of God, for in baptism our lives are grafted onto Christ. In baptism we become heralds, like John, of Christ’s redeeming presence in our world. By our Christian living (blamelessly and with righteousness) we proclaim how we prepare for Christ’s second coming. But even more: being baptized in the Spirit makes us members of Christ’s very body. We not only point to Christ, but we also make present the Christ who dwells in us! This Sunday, 6 December we will offer the Sacrament of Penance & Reconciliation (confessions) in preparation for the Solemnity of Christmas. I ask that you consult the e-letter for a suggested schedule in order to provide for your needs while observing the necessary protocols. The 11 Priest confessors enable us to serve your needs in a timely manner. As these priests come to our parish to assist, I will be going to other parishes during the Season of Advent to assist in serving those parishioners. This coming week is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin
Mary, patroness of the United States of America. We will offer a broadcast mass online as well as mass on 8 December at 9 am for the Solemnity. This past week was the annual “signing of the books” at the Chancery Office. Each year the pastor presents the Sacramental Register Books for inspection by the Vicar Forane (Dean) and “Corporate Resolutions” re-appointing the pastor as Secretary-Treasurer and two members of the parish congregation as “Lay Trustees” by His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton or his delegate. This year, following consultation, I have nominated parishioners William F. LaMorte & Irene Weller to serve as our Parish Trustees for a one year term. These appointments may be renewed annually 5x for a maximum of six years. Both nominations will be approved by His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton’s Vicar General. This year is the final term for both of our trustees. I have asked Mr. LaMorte to remain an additional year past the normative term since we were in the midst of Covid-19. I am grateful to Irene and Bill for their willingness to serve our parish in this important role. Next Saturday is our Annual Light Up A Memory Mass and Tree lighting on Saturday, 12 December at 4:00 pm Mass. Join with us for mass and the singing of Christmas Carols as we illuminate the tree in honor of all those whose lives were affected by the Covid-19 Pandemic. St. Mary Charitable Appeals Christmas, 2020 Each year we here at Charitable Appeals are approached directly by the heads of needy families seeking Christmas gifts for their children, their grandchildren, and themselves. We have helped many of them in the past – some return every year and some of them are new. Their Christmases have been brightened through the efforts and abundant generosity of numerous St. Mary parishioners (especially the Members of The Martha Mary Guild and Walking With Purpose) who shopped for specific gift requests at their own expense and wrapped the gifts as well.

CHRISTMAS SPONSOR-A-FAMILY Purchase gifts for a family in need. You select Several families or a group of people can sponsor a larger family. We ask that you spend $50 per person and you will be provided with a list of needed items prepared by the family. This program adopts families from Aslan Youth Ministries. The goal is to sponsor families in need at Christmas. ‘Tree of Love’
The task was not a small one. Last year, St. Mary parishioners shopped for, purchased, wrapped, and distributed 105 gifts to fulfill wishes on 46 Christmas lists. This year, the requests are still coming in, but due to the Corona virus pandemic things will be different; we will fill gift requests by the distribution of gift cards. It’s important to be aware that the Charitable Appeals Christmas gift program is separate from and differs from The Tree of Love and SponsorA-Family programs in that the requests received are directly from the recipients themselves – not through other organizations.
MONETARY DONATIONS are also needed and will be used by our team of shoppers to purchase the remaining 200 gifts for organizations that want physical gifts as well as any gift cards still needed. Moral Guidance Regarding Vaccines and COVID‐19 (23 Nov 2020) Rev. Joseph M. Koopman, STD Associate Professor of Moral Theology St. Mary Seminary and Graduate School of Theology Diocese of Cleveland With the prospect of the FDA approving one (or more) COVID‐19 vaccines within the next few weeks, many ques ons have been raised regarding the ethical status of these vaccines (par cularly ques oning whether embryonic stem cells or ssue from aborted fetuses were used in their crea on, and whether Catholics can morally receive such vaccines). The following is a brief moral analysis to help provide you some guidance when these ques ons arise. Be mindful that this analysis is dependent on current informa on, and therefore could change once more informa on is released. It has only been within the last few days that the findings of some of the vaccines have been submi ed to the FDA for approval, so more informa on will be forthcoming in the upcoming weeks as the government and independent researchers have access to data. At this point, it appears as if the vaccine created by Pfizer/Biontech, along with the vaccine created by Moderna have not been created using material of illicit origin (i.e., embryonic stem cells and/or the ssue of aborted children.) For Catholics, this is great news. Theologically speaking, there are no moral or religious grounds that would restrict the consciences of Catholics from receiving these vaccines. There have been ar cles and press releases that affirm that, while these above vaccines were not created with material of illicit origin, there is good reason to believe that these vaccines may have been tested (post produc on) u lizing the ssue of aborted fetuses. These ar cles and statements, therefore, conclude that it is immoral to use them. This sweeping conclusion is inconsistent with Catholic moral teaching. A cri cal ques on is: “Are Catholics always forbidden to perform an ac on if it touches upon evil, or cooperates, somehow, with the evil ac on of another?” The answer is ‘no’. There certainly are instances when Catholics must refrain from immoral coopera on. However, Catholic teaching on moral coopera on makes cri cal dis nc ons (mediate/immediate, proximate/remote, etc.) to determine the degree or level to which one cooperates in evil. In some cases, some forms of coopera on, while unfortunate, can be allowed in certain circumstances. Unfortunately, we live in a fallen world. Dig deep enough, and one finds that many of our ac ons somehow touch upon evil and the evil ac ons of others. While the Church draws a firm line in delinea ng certain acts of coopera on as immoral, it does not condemn all ac ons of coopera on as such. It challenges us to be aware of evil around us, to always choose the op on that involves less evil (or no evil), and to speak and challenge others to desist from evil. It is for this reason that the Church, in the early months of vaccine development for COVID 19, boldly challenged (and con nues to challenge) researchers and the medical industry to seek moral means of vaccine produc on (and to reject the use of material of illicit origin that involved the destruc on of unborn life). Regarding the previous statement regarding the immorality of taking the vaccine because of immoral post‐ produc on tes ng, or even statements from some bishops that have forbidden vaccines derived from material of illicit origin, the following paragraph from Dignitas Personae, issued from the CDF under Pope
