45th Anniversary of the Parish of Saint Mary

September 2017 Dear Parishioners & Friends: The Diocese of Newark (at the time comprised the entire state of NJ) erected a Roman Catholic Church Building in 1879 at the direction of the Right Reverend Michael Corrigan, Bishop of Newark, for a small community in Atlantic Township, presently Colts Neck Township. The Church of Saint Mary was incorporated in the State of New Jersey as a not for profit organization in 1887 with The Right Reverend Michael Joseph O’Farrell, Bishop of Trenton as President; Reverend Msgr. Anthony Smith, Vicar General as Vice-President; Reverend Fr. Frederic Kivelitz, Secretary-Treasurer; Robert Kelsy and Dennis Buckley serving as Lay Trustees. The Parish of Saint Mary was erected as a canonical territorial parish in February 1972 by His Excellency, The Most Reverend George W. Ahr, Bishop of Trenton with Reverend Fr. Raymond Griffin appointed Founding Pastor. The new Church Building and Parish Hall being dedicated February, 1973, one month after the untimely death of its founding pastor. The Roman Catholic presence in our Colts Neck community dates from the late 19th century. We have a long history in this town and continue to build upon this foundation today and with an eye toward the future. The celebration we are observing marks the formal establishment of our community as an independent parish according to the canons of our church. This celebration is also an opportunity to stop and give thanks to Almighty God for the countless blessings we have received in building the kingdom of God in our midst. As we gather in celebration of these past years let us re-commit ourselves to building upon our heritage of worship, faith formation, outreach and community building. This is the mission we have received. This is the mission we are called to nurture through our stewardship. This is the mission we will pass along to the coming generations of Roman Catholics who will follow us in the years to come. Let us pray that Holy Mary, Seat of Wisdom, may continue to intercede for us in all that we do. Let us pray that the Holy Eucharist will nourish us in our moments of uncertainty as we persevere. May God bless all those who have worked to prepare our celebration and this revised history. May this parish community continue to be a beacon of hope to all who come seeking God in the everyday circumstances of life. Peace!

Barbara Zwolinski 1931-2017
An early volunteer for the Commemorative Journal Committee, Barbara Zwolinski was a long-time parishioner of St. Mary and wrote several wonderful stories to share with us. She died suddenly just weeks ago. Many of the stories in the journal are hers. Following is her personal story. A Welcoming Church My family left all that was familiar to us in Trenton for a business venture my father wanted to pursue in Freewood Acres, a little community between Freehold and Lakewood. At that time we attended St. Mary of the Assumption, a mission church of St. Catherine’s in Farmingdale. Softening our disappointment about the move was my father’s discovery that Father Joseph Brzozowski, formerly of our Holy Cross parish in Trenton, would be our pastor at Assumption. He had served at my First Communion and would officiate at my marriage to Stephen Zwolinski and later, at St. Mary in Colts Neck, at the christening of my daughter, Stephanie. His presence at these occasions is one of our treasured memories of St. Mary.

We remember our past... EARLY YEARS Although we are celebrating the 45th anniversary of St. Mary Parish at its current location, the history of our Catholic community goes back many years. In the early 19th century, Monmouth County was a very rural area and the Catholic population was scattered among farms and homesteads. Early on, clergy from St. Paul’s in Princeton traveled here to celebrate mass in someone’s home. Later St. Rose of Lima Church in Freehold oversaw a parish territory encompassing 125 square miles.
MISSION CHURCH Father Kivelitz, a young Jesuit, became pastor of St. Rose of Lima and in 1879 the Diocese of Newark arranged for the construction of a mission church, St. Mary, on Heyers Mill Road in Colts Neck. It was a 30- by 55-foot church seating 100 persons. Many local people worked on church construction, men carting bricks from Perth Amboy to Colts Neck in horse-drawn wagons.
FATHER Raymond GRIFFIN AND A NEW CHURCH Following World War II, the postwar population growth in the Colts Neck area made it clear that a new and larger church was needed for the parish. In 1960, 25 acres on Route 34 and Phalanx Road, the geographical center of Colts Neck, was purchased from Mr. G. Rezeau-Conover for $35,000. Ground was broken in December of 1971, and in early 1972 the bishop declared St. Mary to be an independent parish with Father Raymond Griffin appointed as its first resident pastor. He began a fundraising drive and slowly watched his dream come true. On December 23, 1972, Father Griffin celebrated the first mass in the new church. It was a happy Christmas as parishioners who had worked so tirelessly saw the fruits of their labor completed. Tragically, just two weeks later, Father Griffin suffered a stroke and died at the age of 48. The entire community was in mourning and shock when, ironically, the first Mass of Christian burial at St. Mary was that of its founding pastor. FATHER William BAUSCH AND A NEW ERA On February 23, 1973, Fr. William Bausch was appointed pastor by the Bishop of Trenton, coming from St. Benedict Parish in Holmdel. There were only 250 families then but, as rural farms turned into suburban developments, population growth and the inviting influence of Vatican II became the stimulus for a new era for our parish. In early 1973 only the church and parish hall were completed. A series of five year plans were developed. A parish house was constructed for clergy and eventually there were additions to the campus: the Spiritual Center, the Marian Grotto and a Meditation Garden with a statue of St. Francis of Assissi designed by Father Bausch. During his twenty-two years as pastor, Father Bausch was a beloved homilist who instilled his concept of parishioner participation and ownership. It was parishioners who cleaned the church, arranged flowers, mowed the lawn, led the music, decorated for church seasons and so on. Father Bausch’s writings on parish ministry, as well as the sacraments, storytelling and church history, brought a nationwide reputation to St. Mary as his books, now numbering over 30, have been used as study guides and textbooks for both clergy and laity. Before retiring in 1995, Fr. Bausch’s final gesture was to design and bequeath a statue of Dorothy Day, advocate of the poor, sitting on a bench in front of the church, challenging us to live the gospel and to share our gifts with those in need.
FATHER EDward Griswold On June 19, 1995 Father Edward J. Griswold was sent as pastor following Father Bausch. Ordained a priest for the Diocese of Trenton in 1973, Father Ed had spent seven years in the Archdiocese of Chicago. He had served as Executive Director of the National Conference of Diocesan Vocation Directors and as Spiritual Director at the Mundelein Seminary, University of St. Mary of the Lake. At the time of his appointment, following a period of increased building in Colts Neck and surrounding communities, there were approximately 1,200 families in the parish. Recognizing the growing needs of the parish, the Millennium Project was inaugurated, which provided necessary church renovations and added a spacious “gathering space” in the entryway. The spiritual center was expanded to include a Family Life Center. During the eleven years of Father Ed’s tenure, religious education for children was greatly expanded and the music ministry was further developed.

FATHER THOMAS TRIGGS Following Father Ed’s transfer to St. Gregory the Great parish in Hamilton Square in 2006, Rev. Father Thomas J. Triggs was appointed pastor. The responsibility to be stewards of all God’s gifts shaped Father Tom’s call “to offer our Time, Talent and Treasure to the parish and to those in need.” The Social Concerns Ministry increased activity, particularly after Super Storm Sandy devastated much of the Jersey Shore. A parish ministry fair was introduced, and our first golf tournament was scheduled. A solar panel field was developed, lessening our electric bill and enabling us to be ecologically responsible. In order to ascertain the needs and interests of parishioners, Father Tom oversaw a Stewardship Survey and Appreciative Inquiry.
FATHER JEFFREY LEE In 2013, Father Jeff Lee was installed as pastor of St. Mary. Born and raised in Trenton, Father Jeff was later pastor of his childhood church, The Church of St. Joachim. He came to St. Mary from the Parish of Our Lady of the Angels in Trenton where he had been pastor, at the same time serving on the Trenton Diocesan Presbyteral Council and as a member of the Episcopal Council, Diocese of Trenton and overseeing Diocesan restructuring. Father Jeff was appointed Episcopal Vicar for Mercer County in 2011. Coming to St. Mary, he immediately conducted a series of 30 listening sessions to meet parishioners and listen to their concerns. Those interviews, along with the previous Stewardship Report and Appreciative Inquiry, became the foundation of the future vision for our parish. Father Jeff moved the parish offices into the spiritual center and oversaw the development of a Catholic Childrens Preschool Program on one end of that building. In addition to the annual Golf Outing, two “Love Thy Neighbor” events have been held in Colts Neck: one at Abbey Farm in 2014 and the current 45th anniversary celebration on the grounds of Willowbrook Farms, hosted by the Gutierrez family.
ASSISTING CLERGY Over the years, the many parish activities have been organized and supported by dedicated office staff, pastoral assistants, religious education teachers, ministers of music and liturgy – too many to name, but dearly appreciated. Deacons have assisted with liturgy and the sacraments – currently Deacon Fred Sorrentino and Deacon Vincent Rinaldi. We have been blessed with exceptional visiting priests –most recently Monsignor Troiano and Fathers Anderson, Xavier, Hank and Carotenuto. In particular, Father Victor Hoagland, CP has been a consistent and beloved presence. For nearly 30 years he has been offering wise spiritual counsel and gentle humor, earning the deep affection of parishioners. Father Victor

e celebrate the Sapphire Jubilee of the Parish of St. Mary. It is actually a double celebration. It marks both the 45th anniversary of the transition of St. Mary from a mission parish to an independent parish as well as the 45th anniversary of the establishment of our church at its present location on Phalanx Road. This new beautiful church, located in the center of a growing town meant more people, more space, more help and thus, more ministries. From its inception, ministries have been the cornerstone of our newly established church and parish. Over the last 45 years, we have witnessed many improvements to our church, but what we don’t physically see is far more important. Our community is alive in the spirit of the Lord. The sacrificial giving and ministering continues to grow; so many give their time on committees, activities and ministries. The names would go on and on and will be forever changing. Our work is never done, nor do we want it to be. We will continue to serve the Lord, the community and each other. As needs arise we will meet the challenges with new and rewarding ministries. For now, we commemorate how far we have come, we celebrate what has been done, we appreciate all who do, and we prepare for the future and beyond.

our stories An Old Fashioned Fundraiser Besides cake sales on the front patio of the Old St. Mary Church on Heyers Mill Road, there was an annual fall card party at Perrotti’s Restaurant on Route 34. Tess Perrotti and her husband hosted this annual event with card tables borrowed from St. Catherine’s in Farmingdale. We were at that time a mission church. Prizes of the day were, for example, 50 lbs of potatoes, an oil change at the Esso Station, a basket of Denise’s peaches, dinner at Perrotti’s or Green Meadows or the Pleasant Valley Inn, all on Route 34. The card game of the era was Pinochle, and the desserts by Mr. Perrotti would be his hazelnut mile-high cake or an authentic Colts Neck apple pie. ─ Barbara Zwolinski
From Tree to Altar The altar now in the Christ Chapel was once a tree growing in a field in Colts Neck. The story began when Father Bausch visited Bill Barth and mentioned the need for an altar in the new chapel. Ideas were floated-maybe a base that looked like a tree, since the background of the altar would be large windows with all of nature visible during mass. Some time later Bill was walking with a friend, Ben DiFedele, through a Colts Neck field and saw just the perfect specimen for a base of the new altar. They contrived to transport this natural gem to Bill’s garage, where work began trimming, leveling, sawing and shaping this piece of nature into a magnificent base, to be topped by another wonderful length of wood to complete the altar. This altar remains a beautiful part of our daily worship in the chapel, thanks to Bill Barth, Fr. Bausch and Ben DeFedele. ─ Barbara Zwolinski

our stories The Great Escape Priests are always pleased to welcome lost sheep back into the fold, but for Father Bausch that gained new meaning one Advent Season. In those days, a living manger was situated on the front lawn of the church. Little sheep poked around the manger and statues of the Holy Family and shepherds. One morning at 2:30 a.m., Father Bausch was awakened by a policeman. The sheep had gotten loose and were a danger to traffic on Route 34. Something had to be done! With the help of the policeman, Father Bausch and his German shepherd tried to corral the sheep, but to no use. (They were having a baaad time of it!) Finally, Father Bausch called on Mr. Flock, whose farm was just across the street. Mr. Flock came with his border collie and was able to round up the strays. The manger fence was repaired so Advent could proceed as planned.
A Family Remembrance Our family has been a part of St. Mary Parish since 1953. We moved from St. Joseph Parish in Keyport to establish a vegetable farm here. Old St. Mary was then considered a mission church. Our children could not be christened there so we had to go to St. Catherine’s, Farmingdale, for all four children. First Communions and Confirmations were usually at Old St. Mary until the new church was built. The sisters taught our children catechism and our two sons, Blaise and Thomas, were taught to be altar boys by Father Nick. Mass was in Latin then. When new St. Mary was proposed, my late husband, Ben was one of the first to volunteer to raise funds. Later on, when the new chapel was built, Ben took Bill Barth out on our farm where they picked out the tree for the chapel altar. Bill made the most beautiful altar out of that tree! ─ Anne S. The Sharing Shed A parishioner for over 80 years, Marjorie Messler has an endless supply of stories. She was originally a McGuire and her family ran McGuire’s farm stand on the corner of Route 34 and Laird Road. As an efficient homemaker, Marge Messler used to freeze her vegetables. Once when she was awaiting delivery of a new freezer, she took her frozen produce to the family market for temporary keeping – and ran into Father Bausch. When he learned what Marge was doing, he suggested the parish start freezing food for those in need – and so began the Sharing Shed. Parishioners contributed frozen meals as well as canned and boxed goods to supplement the pantries of our neighbors. Mrs. Messler also shared a story about her brother, Bobby McGuire, and his friend, John Smith, who used to serve as altar boys at the 8 a.m. mass. Once as they were robing, Bobby screamed and jumped out the back door. A mouse had built a nest in his robe!

The Moondance Big Band has delighted audiences of all ages, who enjoy singing along and dancing to a variety of music. From the Big Band era, all the way to the music of today, the band always brings them to their feet! The band is a dynamic nineteen member ensemble whose members all share a common love of Big Band music. Band members come from diverse musical backgrounds, from professional musicians and music educators, to seasoned, accomplished part-time musicians. All have been studying their individual instruments since a very young age, and have honed their instrumental and vocal skills to a keen edge. The band’s repertoire spans the Great American Songbook, with beloved classics first made famous by legendary names like Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and Frank Sinatra, all the way to the well-known songs of Rock and Roll.
