-Jane Frances de Chantal, Wife, Mother and Religious, 1572-1641 Daughter of the president of the Burgundy parliament, Jane Frances was born in Dijon, France. At the age of twenty, she married Baron Christopher de Chantal. The couple had seven children, three of whom died in infancy. Jane reestablished the custom of daily Mass in her castle residence and engaged in numerous charitable works. When her husband died in a hunting accident in 1601, Jane Frances sank into a depression. She and her children moved into her father-in-law's house when he threatened to disinherit her children. Despite his oppressiveness, she managed to regain her cheerfulness and raise her children in a happy atmosphere. When she was about thirty-two, Jane heard Saint Francis de Sales preach and recognized him from a vision she had earlier seen. Greatly affected by his words, she convinced him to become her spiritual director. Jane Frances indicated her desire to enter the Carmelites, but Francis de Sales convinced her that this was not her calling. A few years later, however, he explained to her his concept for a new congregation which he wished to found. This order would be open to women who, because of health, age, or other circumstances, could not enter the established orders. This order would undertake spiritual and corporal works of mercy and exemplify the virtues shown by Mary at the Visitation READ MORE HERE

WORSHIP & MUSIC Saint Augustine, Bishop and Doctor of the Church A rabble-rouser in his youth. A baptized Christian at 33. An ordained priest at 36. A bishop at 41: Many people are familiar with the biographical sketch of Augustine of Hippo, sinner turned saint. But to get to really know the man is a rewarding experience. There quickly surfaces the intensity with which he lived his life, whether his path led away from or toward God. His mother, Saint Monica, prayed constantly for his conversion, shedding tears over her sons sinful ways. Eventually, through her prayer, the instructions of Saint Ambrose and, most of all, the word of God in the Scriptures, eventually redirected Augustine’s “love of life” to a “life of love”, a complete turnaround from one who once wanted nothing to do with God or Jesus. His early life of decadence, filled with drinking, loose living, parties and abandonment followed by his subsequent conversion have led him to the patron saint of those struggling with or recovering from addiction. In his day, Augustine providentially fulfilled the office of prophet. Like Jeremiah and other greats, he was hard-pressed but could not keep quiet. “I say to myself, I will not mention him/I will speak in his name no more/But then it becomes like fire burning in my heart/imprisoned in my bones/I grow weary holding it in/I cannot endure it” (Jeremiah 20:9).
His memorial is celebrated on August 28th. This year, Principal Cantor, Carly York, will release a new sacred song, “Breathe on Me, Holy Spirit.” The song sets a prayer attributed to St. Augustine, written more than 1,500 years ago, to an original melody. The Prayer asks the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with His sacred presence. The song grew out of Carly’s own prayer and reflection on St. Augustine’s words, and her desire to bring this ancient prayer to life through music. “Breathe on Me, Holy Spirit” is one of two original compositions featured on the upcoming album, “I Heard the Voice”, which will be released September 25,2026. It will be sung during the Communion procession at Masses on August 29 and 30. The music is hoped to become not simply something we hear, but a prayer we can internalize as our own as we receive Christ in the Eucharist. Please also Save-the-Date: Carly York and Andrew Macirowski will present a Recital, “I Heard the Voice,” on Sunday September 20, at 4pm in the church.

Quo vadis... My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time. The good news of the Church is that Christ trusts us to proclaim throughout the ages that his identity has been revealed by God. Jesus didn’t only choose great thinkers or saintly people to steer his Church on a right course and make his name known. He chose ordinary human beings who simply open themselves to the capacity to be great believers because they are first great hearers of the revelation. “Revelation” doesn’t mean that we sit around alone in silence waiting for God to speak to us. It means that we open our eyes to see and our ears to hear and our hearts to experience Jesus’ presence and power in the daily happenings around us. The infant who utters the first word and delights parents, one who has Alzheimer’s who has a rare moment of recognition, the unexpected good deed that comes our way can all be revelations of Jesus’ identity and saving power. We only need to hear and have faith. The Martha Mary Guild Clothing Sale is beginning to gather momentum. The ladies work very hard to make this sale a huge success. Take time to review your clothes. Perhaps there are some that are now too big? Consider donating them to this cause. All proceeds of the sale benefit the charitable works of the Martha Mary Guild. More information is included in this bulletin. The tile work in our parish church is nearly completed. The reredos tile has been installed. The cabinet for the Tabernacle is in place. Other cabinets and credence tables are in place. They have been designed and fabricated based on the various liturgical rites. Thanks to our parish team and those
members of the parish patrimony committee for their continued guidance. Some new hand rails will be fabricated and installed in the coming weeks. I am grateful to all for your support and cooperation during this period of improvements. I have been meeting with some liturgical ministry groups for some in going formation and to update some logistics and protocols. I am grateful for their stewardship of time and talent in support of our parish community. We are in need of altar servers and extraordinary ministers of holy communion. I know that RJ and Chloe made a pitch to the summer intensive RE participants to consider becoming altar severs. 15 new servers would greatly assist…more than that would be awesome. Many of our young people desire to participate but are unfortunately discouraged by their parents…? I hope we can encourage and welcome young people to become more involved in parish life. The weekends, 22/23 & 29/30 August and 5/6 September we will observe an abbreviated weekend mass schedule: Saturday 4:00pm; Sunday 10:00am. Please make note of this in your personal schedule. This weekend I am hosting a family gathering at the clergy residence. It is always nice to connect with whom ever is available to participate. Enjoy the remaining days of summer.
