Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults The RCIA process involves not just the newcomer or "inquirer" but all the members of the community who by prayer and personal example help the inquirer find his or her place in the Church. 

Typical tasks and responsibilities: Listening and preparing adults in a process to be received into the Catholic faith and parish community.



Required training or skills: 1.5 hr. training session, weekly.

The 2022 Mass Intention Book will open on Sunday August 29, 2021 for date specific Mass Intentions within the 2022 year. This year requests can be made via paper or online. Requests will be time stamped when received to provide order of entry into the new year book. Parish Office Dates and Times for receiving of requests: Sunday, Aug 29, 2021 from 9-12 noon Monday, Aug 30, 2021 from 9-2 pm Tuesday, Aug 31, 2021 from 2-7 pm

You can print this form and return to the Parish Office, or pick up a form at the office. Please be sure to have several options for your desired dates so that we can accommodate you properly. Ash Wednesday, Christmas, Easter and the Sacred Triduum are not available for intentions. It is appropriate for you or the family of the deceased to attend the mass when celebrated. The suggested stipend for a mass Intention is $10.00 and has been set by the N.J. Bishops in the Province of Newark. Stipend can be paid by cash, check, or credit card. Every effort will be made to satisfy all requests, however in some cases the intention availability for a date you are requesting may be filled and you will be asked to choose another date. After the initial Mass Book opening, requests may be submitted using this multi-intention form, online, or a Mass Request Envelope. Availability of dates is on a first-come first served basis. The members of the Mass Book team do not have the authority to make exceptions, so please do not ask them to do so. If you have any questions please contact the Parish Office at 732-780-2666.

Saint Bartholomew Saint Bartholomew, one of the Twelve Apostles, is listed in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke, and in the Acts of the Apostles. His name means "son of Tholomai" in Aramaic, and is therefore likely a surname. The Gospel of John

calls him by his given name of Nathaniel. St. John also tells us that St. Bartholomew was from Cana in Galilee, and that he was evangelized by St. Philip. Jesus paid him a great compliment: “Here is a true Israelite. There is no duplicity in him” (John 1:47b). When Nathanael asked how Jesus knew him, Jesus said, “I saw you under the fig tree” (John 1:48b). Whatever amazing revelation this involved, it brought Nathanael to exclaim, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel” (John 1:49b). But Jesus countered with, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this” (John 1:50b). According to the Roman Martyrology, he spread the Gospel to Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Persia and Armenia, and was martyred by King Astyages of Armenia, traditionally in Abanopolis on the Caspian sea. The church historian Eusebius writes that in the third century St. Pantaenus found

Christians in India and that they had a copy of St Matthew's Gospel written in Hebrew which, they said had been brought to them by St. Bartholomew. St. Bartholomew is traditionally pictured in art with knives representing the instruments of his martyrdom - being flayed alive. His relics are thought to be preserved in the church of St. Bartholomew-on-the-Tiber, at Rome. His feast day is August 24th and he is the patron of skin disease and occupations which involve knives, such as tanning and bookbinding.

Updated Covid-19 Protocols at St Mary Parish There are updated directives from the Diocese where masks will no longer be required for fully vaccinated persons. If not fully vaccinated, persons are strongly encouraged to follow CDC guidance and wear a face mask in public settings. Also Effective June 4, all indoor gathering limits will be removed . Although these directives represent a reduction of pandemic restrictions, St Mary has a few requirements for Mass. 



The Sign of Peace will resume but we encourage parishioners to replace a handshake with a reverent gesture, such as a nod or wave. During the Our Father please refrain from holding hands or making contact with any nonfamily member. St Mary has decided to continue with the electronic bulletin that is timely emailed to our parishioners each week. If you should require a printed copy, please contact Andrea Billitteri at the parish Office (732-780-2666 ext. 311) and one will be made available to you.

If you are not receiving the bulletin via email please email or call the parish office and we will add you to our distribution list. 

With the lifting of the dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass, we have discontinued the broadcast Mass after June 13, the Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. There remain many options on TV and the internet for those who choose.

As always, we thank you for your cooperation and support as we resume our normal celebration of the liturgy.

Take Action Now to Protect the Hyde Amendment The Hyde Amendment, contained in the federal government’s annual appropriations legislation, prohibits federal funding of domestic abortions, except in cases of rape, incest or to save the life of the mother. It is a bipartisan provision that has been part of federal appropriations for 45 years (since 1976) and enjoys overwhelming public support. Now some members in Congress want to take away these laws that both Democrats and Republicans have supported for nearly half a century. If successful billions of taxpayer dollars could be used to pay for abortions. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is asking all Catholics and people of good will to sign a petition to let Congress know they support the Hyde Amendment and do not want tax dollars paying for

abortions.

Take Action

Back to school on the journey back to normal We all have been hoping and praying that the effects of the pandemic would be well behind us by the time we opened our Catholic school doors for the 2021-22 academic year. Sad to say, that is not the case. Although much progress has thankfully been made in so many areas of endeavor, the pandemic continues to make its presence felt through Delta and other emerging COVID variants causing spikes in the virus in many parts of the country, including here in our own state of New Jersey. We are fortunate that our Catholic schools will be able to resume classes and other activities “in person” rather than online this year. That fact alone will make a big difference in teaching and learning as well as in socialization so necessary and so missed last year among and within our Catholic school communities.

Saint of the Week– Maximilian Kolbe, Priest and Martyr, 1894-1941 Most often, we think of martyrs as those who suffered for their faith during the early days of the Church. Yet Maximilian Kolbe was a martyr in the 20th century. Maximilian was the prior of the largest friary in the world located at Niepokalanow, a small village near Warsaw in Poland. When World War II began in 1939, Hitler's Germany quickly overran Czechoslovakia. Father Kolbe prayed for the world, but he knew that his country was going to be involved. Poland, in fact, was next.

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time. Believe or leave—a pretty clear choice. What shocks us into making the right choice? The problem is, many of us make the choice to stay with Jesus but live this new, self-giving life only halfheartedly. Couched in our beliefchoice is really unbelief (in this gospel also portrayed as betrayal). Liturgy invites us to constantly assess the depth of our beliefcommitment. We judge our belief not on what we say or think but on what we do. “It is the spirit that gives life.” The Holy Spirit dwells within us and is the source of our life in Christ and of our commitment to believe wholeheartedly. Without the Spirit we would be unbelievers, returning to our “former way of life.” The Spirit enables us to enter into the rhythm of paschal mystery living—of dying and rising, of self-giving and celebrating the indwelling of God. Constant vigilance and openness to the Spirit within nudges our halfhearted response to a wholehearted one. Many of our parishioners are preparing their children to begin or return to school. It is an exciting time and yet it can be a stressful time. Let us remember these students, especially those who are going away from home for the first time, that they might continue to grow in wisdom, holiness and service. I ask that you reserve Sunday, 5 June 2022, the Solemnity of Pentecost, Solemn Pontifical Mass of Thanksgiving observing the 50th Anniversary of the establishment of our Parish of Saint Mary as we know it today. The history of Catholics in Atlantic Township (later re-named Colts Neck) dates back to the 19th century with the building of our first church dating 1879, the appointment of a resident pastor 1887 which lasted a brief time, then the construction of our current parish campus

with the appointment of a resident pastor in 1972. His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop of Trenton has accepted our invitation to be the celebrant and homilist for this Jubilee Mass. It is my hope that we will come together in prayer to God for the many blessings of our parish community. Save the date!

We are offering opportunities for those in need with co-vid related stress to participate in some prayerful sessions here in our parish. Father Gene will be facilitating this opportunity to process grief or anxiety that has arisen due to the pandemic. Father Mike is making himself available for those who would like to speak with a priest. Perhaps something is preventing you from fully participating in the life of the church? Interest in completing the Sacraments of Initiation (Confirmation and Eucharist)? Interested in becoming a Roman Catholic? Greater details in the parish bulletin. I have been meeting with couples who are preparing to celebrate the Sacrament of Matrimony here in out parish. I think there may be 17 couples or so in this process. It is an exciting time for them and for the parish. Some have participated in our parish as children and young adults. Most will not live here after their wedding. Some might later on in their life. Let us pray for them as they begin their family life. As always, thanks for all that you do and your faithfulness to the church and our parish. This weekend I will be hosting some members of my family. It is good for us to be together and keep strong our family ties. This coming week my priest classmate will be visiting for a few days. A 12-WEEK PROGRAM FOR THE DIVORCED AND SEPARATED

Martha Mary Guild: Who are We?

WHAT IS IT? The program is called “Surviving Divorce: Hope and Healing for the Catholic Family”. It is a DVD series developed by Rose Sweet, a dynamic author and speaker who has developed this series to help Christians and their families heal from divorce!
