It is originally based on the Catholic devotion to the Divine Mercy that Saint Faustina Kowalska of the Blessed Sacrament reported as part of her encounter with Jesus, and is associated with special promises from Jesus and indulgences issued by the Church. The devotion was actively promoted by Pope Saint John Paul II. On April 30, 2000, Sister Faustina was canonized and the Sunday after Easter was declared as Divine Mercy Sunday.
In the years since, the devotion has grown, with many Catholics reciting the Divine Mercy Chaplet as part of their prayers, especially during adoration or in preparation for or after the sacrament of penance and reconciliation. A growing number of churches hold special services on this day. Votive Masses, penance and reconciliation services, Eucharistic adoration, concerts, liturgy of the hours with the people, etc. A Plenary Indulgence may also be obtained by: Going to confession, attending Mass and partaking in Holy Communion, to pray for the intentions of the Holy Father, while: In any church or chapel take part in the prayers and devotions in honor of the Divine Mercy. In the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, exposed or reserved in the tabernacle, say an Our Father and Creed. ...in both cases, adding a devout prayer to the Merciful Lord. As we continue on our Easter experience, let us remember the Mercy of Jesus.
Saint of the Week: Stanislaus, Bishop and Martyr, 1030-1079
“Easter Duty” The Catholic Church requires of us as baptized Catholics to observe the following: The obligation, the privilege really, of receiving the Eucharist at least once a year --- often called “Easter duty” --- for those in the state of grace should still be fulfilled during the period from the First Sunday of Lent, March 5-6, 2022 to Trinity Sunday, June 12, 2022. However, the Church’s law does permit this precept to be fulfilled at another time during the year when there is a just cause.
Stanislaus was the only child of noble family from a town near Cracow, Poland. Childless for many years of marriage, his parents’ prayers were answered with his birth. In thanksgiving, they dedicated his life to God. Stanislaus was educated in Gnesen and in Paris and was ordained by Bishop Lambert Zula of Cracow who gave him a canonry and later appointed him his archdeacon and preacher. The young priest soon became known for his preaching and he was able to bring about a reformation of the morals of the people of Cracow including many clergy. Bishop Lambert wished to resign his episcopacy in favor of Stanislaus, but the priest would not hear of it. Nevertheless, upon the death of Lambert, he was overwhelmingly chosen bishop by the people. Church celebrates the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation & Eucharist. We will celebrate First Communion and Confirmation in the fall. Continue to pray for our community that God will guide us and strengthen us as we welcome new families and help them in forming their children in the faith of Jesus Christ. A special word of thanks to our parish staff and those volunteers who work regularly with them for providing us with a wonderfully enriching Lenten Season, Holy Week, Triduum and Easter Sunday. Many thanks for the home made goodies that were shared with us at the parish house for Easter. I appreciate the positive comments about how we are celebrating Easter. Welcome to all of those families participating in our Annual Easter Egg Hunt this weekend. Thanks to all those who work to promote and provide this opportunity for our parish families.
Today we celebrate the Second Sunday of Easter. Traditionally this Sunday was known as “Low Sunday” thus ending the Easter Octave (8 Days). More recently under the pontificate of the late Pope John Paul II this Sunday has become known as “Divine Mercy Sunday” honoring the polish nun Maria Faustina who was recently honored with formal canonization and the title of “Saint” in the universal church. Most of us won’t cure anyone when our shadow falls upon them. But this doesn’t mean that we don’t continue the works of Jesus that lead others to believing. Any good we do for others is overshadowing them with the goodness of Jesus. Any good we do brings this same new, resurrected life to others. We are empowered to do so through the Holy Spirit. All we need do is surrender to God’s action within us. We have these fifty days of Easter to come to greater belief.
