Every county in Indiana has a clerk of courts. It is an elected position requiring candidates to participate in a local election if they want to be considered for the role. The clerk serves a four-year term and can serve for up to two consecutive terms in a 12 year period.
The county clerk is responsible for managing the records for both the Fulton County Circuit Court and Fulton County Superior Court. The clerk also serves as chief financial officer for the courts and is responsible for court-related revenue that is received. This includes traffic fines, court costs, judgment payments and child support payments. The clerk is an active member of the Fulton County Commission of Public Records. In addition to maintaining court dockets and schedules, the clerk files new court cases and issues any warrants when required. Jury selection is handled through the clerk’s office, and passport and marriage licenses services are also provided. The management of local elections is another major responsibility of the clerk’s duties. The clerk is responsible

for conducting and overseeing all aspects of federal, state and county elections. This includes any township, school board, municipal and special elections. Dawn Ziemek was elected Fulton County Clerk of Courts in November 2022. She is a member of the Republican party. She said, “I ran for Fulton County Clerk because I truly love what I do.” She went on to add, “I can’t say there is just one thing I like most about the position. The clerk’s office has many different functions and responsibilities, ranging from serving as the keeper of court records to acting as the chief election officer - and everything in between.
