Lake City Skiers assemble Avengers By ABBY OLIVER Staff Writer
in first show of season season
The weather was pleasantly warm and perfect for a ski show as the Lake City Skiers performed their first themed show of the season, “Avengers Assemble,” Sunday, May 31, at Hidden Lake. Before the main show, a pre-show featured a variety of junior development acts. Children as young as 5 years old and newer skiers demonstrated skills they have learned, skiing around the lake, waving to the crowd and practicing balance. The pre-show set the tone for the evening’s theatrical performance with a two-tier human pyramid, with three experienced adults at the base and a younger skier perched on their shoulders. After a brief break, during which guests were encouraged to visit the concession stand, the stands filled quickly and the main show began. The show combined storyline and ski performance. Onshore, actors portrayed Marvel characters Tony Stark, Pepper Potts and Peter Quill as they attempted to close a portal that was bringing Loki’s minions through and
causing mischief. The actors maintained humorous banter throughout the show as they sent skiers portraying Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. after the minions. In their attempts to close the portal, other heroes, including Wanda Maximoff (the Scarlet Witch), Captain America, Thor, Bruce Banner (the Incredible Hulk) and Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow), were featured through voiceovers and appearances on the water. The Scarlet Witch’s appearance was accented by red smoke canisters as she stood atop the portal prop onstage. As for the skiing, performers executed a range of aerial and high-speed tricks, including double helixes and double front helixes. Skiers also performed swivel skiing and barefoot water skiing, along with doubles routines and human pyramids as they worked to stop Loki’s minions. An all-girl ballet line performed first as Scarlet Witch’s team and then as Black Widow’s assassins. The night’s ski show also included a series of 1940s-themed U.S.A. acts to celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary. Skiers performed multiple back-to-back doubles stunts and swivel skiing routines. One of the final acts was performed by Reed Lawson, Continued on page 3
