Photos by Abby Oliver. By ABBY OLIVER Staff Writer Cindy Lursen never expected to spend much of her free time trapping feral cats . But after returning from vacation to find a mother cat and five kittens living in her barn, she called Kosciusko County Trap Neuter Return for help . The organization spayed and neutered the cats, inspiring Lursen to volunteer and recruit her recently retired sister, Kathy Wright . Several years later, Lursen serves as president and Wright as vice president of the all-volunteer organization, which has helped spay or neuter more than 2,000 community cats . “I retired from teaching, and the joke was always corralling cats,” Wright said . “Well, now I literally corral cats .” “We’re the feet on the floor who do most of the

trapping,” Lursen said . KCTNR’s mission is to reduce the community cat population through trap-neuter-return . Every cat receives a spay or neuter surgery, rabies vaccination, microchip and ear tip before being returned to its colony . The ear tip identifies cats that have already completed the TNR process . “Our mission is to reduce the cat population,” Wright said . “Not every friendly cat that is a community cat wants a loving home .” “These feral cats don’t want to live inside,” Lursen said . “They don’t want to be domesticated .
