Kids learn about electrical careers via REMC student board By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer Nine area high school juniors and seniors are learning more about working in the electrical field. That’s due to them serving on the Fulton County Rural Electric Membership Cooperative’s Student Board of Directors. The students meet monthly, generally at Fulton County REMC’s building, where Fulton County REMC Marketing and Communication Specialist Carissa Ziemek leads the group. “I try to teach them about the electric co-op and the industry, but I also try to teach them (about the) real world,” she said.

One of the topics she covered was budgeting. Students have also completed several activities, including working with electrical line and going up in a bucket trip with the help of several of Fulton County REMC’s linemen. They visited the Wabash Valley Power Alliance, and also helped lead the Fulton County REMC’s Easter egg hunt at the Fulton County Fairgrounds. At their April meeting, students worked on year-end presentations to give before Fulton County REMC leadership. Student board members for 2025-26 include: Rochester High School senior Grant Clark and junior Lily Chipps; Caston High
School seniors Alex Ault and Josiah Helt and junior Madisyn Douglass; Argos High School junior Sydney Bauman; Winamac High School juniors Jaybin Hines and Eli Overmyer; and homeschooled junior Aaron Johnson. Douglass said she applied to be on the board as she heard “it was a really great opportunity for me.” “There’s so many different fields attached within this (REMC) building, so it’s always great to build connections and see what’s out there,” she said. Johnson said he joined the board to learn more about the Fulton County REMC. “They provide a critical service,” he said. Continued on page 3
