Overmyer warns of overconfidence on the Tippecanoe visitors underestimate the risks, especially in their swimming confidence. “I always give everyone a quick tutorial before they get into the boat. I show them how to find their center of gravity, how to paddle, and why wearing a life jacket is so important,” Overmyer said. The Danger Of Low-Head Dams One of the ways many paddlers and swimmers drown is the danger of low-head dams, a common
water feature to be seen across Indiana, and in Fulton County. Lake Manitou in Rochester has a low-head dam feature on its northwest side. Low-head dams are low-profile man-made barriers that often appear harmless. However, during moderate to high flows, they generate strong recirculating currents capable of trapping even experienced swimmers. The calmness of the horizon line the dam creates can cause an optical illusion. Indiana Conser-
vation Officers with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, or DNR, suggest watching the sides of riverbanks for concrete structures when waterways are unusually calm.
