Fulton County committee plans numerous events for... By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer Celebrating America’s 250th birthday is “once in a lifetime,” said Candy Hayes. Hayes is serving as Fulton County’s connect coordinator for 250th-related events. The county’s 250th committee has met since December, planning multiple events for this year. Hayes, regent for the Manitou Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, was asked to lead a committee by Charlotte Blair of Columbia City, the cochair of Indiana’s Semiquincentennial Commission. Serving as connect coordinator support is Fulton County GOP Chairwoman Amy Roe, who was invited to help by Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith. Other members of the 250th committee include: Lori Bean; Andrea Roe; Kim Landis; Julie Shambarger; Erica Coffing; Casey Jones; Melinda Clinger; Jennifer Weinert; Linda Wade; Patty Geier; Bob Price; Cindy Price; and

Diane Kreh. The events the group has planned include some happening across the nation. One was “Two Lights for Tomorrow,” or hanging two lanterns in honor of the anniversary of Paul Revere’s ride. The lights hung in the Fulton County Courthouse on Saturday, April 18, and Sunday, April 19, with the poem “Paul Revere’s Ride” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow also posted at the building. Another nationwide event will be the reading of the Declaration of Independence on Wednesday, July 8. ”Everybody in the nation will read (the Declaration of Independence) at the same time (at 6 p.m.),” said Hayes. July 8’s event will occur in downtown Rochester. It will start with the public being welcomed at 5:15 p.m., with attendees getting copies of the Declaration. The opening ceremony is planned for 5:30 p.m., with Hayes speaking briefly. A processional with the Fulton
County Veterans Honor Guard and Fulton County Scouting America troop members, with fife and drum music being played, will be next. Following will be an invocation, with the presentation of colors and the Pledge of Allegiance. The Fulton County Choral Club will sing the National Anthem. Several community members will take turns reading the Declaration at 6 p.m., followed by closing remarks from Hayes. Guests should bring their own chairs, with there being food available and a kids’ activity as well. “We hope to have as many people downtown as possible,” said Roe. Locally conceived events for the 250th include a photo contest, with the theme of “America’s 250th Birthday.” Categories for it are: “Patriotic Spirit,” “Historical Landmarks” and “Small Town America.” People must be 16 and older to enter. The photos must be at least 5 by 7 inches and no larger than 8
by 10 inches and in color or black and white. Photos must be original work by the participant, with minimal editing allowed and no AI-generated pictures. Entry forms may be found at the Fulton and Rochester branches of the Fulton County Public Library. The forms should be dropped off with the photos to the FCPL’s Rochester branch on or before Monday, June 1. Winners will be announced during the Nickel Plate Music and Arts Festival on Saturday, Aug. 22, in Rochester. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place. So far Wings Etc. of Rochester has given a gift card, with a small historical bust being donated by Cindy Price and special 250th coins by Josh Zehner. Individuals or businesses who wish to give prizes may contact Bean at myshichon@hotmail.com or ecoffing@fulco.lib.in.us.
