Fundraiser nets over $9K for

SHOP WITH A COP Text and Photos By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer Andy Brubaker recently got Tased in front of a small crowd. It was for a good reason though: to raise money for Fulton County Shop With a Cop. Brubaker, who works for Mike’s Trash of Rochester, was Tased as part of the “Ride the Lightning” fundraiser hosted by the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office. He and six other community members helped raise $9,037.94 for Shop With a Cop, which allows kids to shop with local officers for Christmas gifts. As Brubaker received the least amount of donations from the community, he was Tased at a special luncheon on Thursday, May 14, at the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office in honor of National Police Week. Fulton County Sheriff Travis Heishman and Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Matt Utter presented Fulton County Fraternal Order of Police 143 President Dennis Price and Recording Secretary Jeff Markley with a check for money raised during “Ride the Lightning.” Heishman also gave Levi Brown with LCB Enterprises a trophy for collecting the most funds: $2,010. Others raising money included: Jenna Neal of Wilson Fertilizer and Grain, who netted $1,565; Joe Bauer of Outlaw Services, who netted $1,270; Brandy Stalbaum of Fulton County 911 Communications, who netted $1,240; Grady McCall of Wilson Fertilizer and Grain, who netted $1,208; and Shaun Mudd of the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Of-

fice and a Tippecanoe Valley School Corp. school resource officer, who netted $1,066.46. Brubaker, who raised $678.48, said he was “a little nervous” before being Tased. “It’s for a good cause,” he said. “Everybody’s laughing big time. I’m terrified of getting shocked by anything at all.” Brubaker said he used to be a volunteer fireman for the Rochester Fire Department and is “still close with a lot of those guys.” “I’m happy to help,” he said of volunteering to be Tased. It was the third year for the FCSO’s “Ride the Lightning” fundraiser. Heishman and Utter said prior to that, someone received a pie in the face for Fulton County Shop With a Cop. “It’s fantastic to see the community come together to support the children within the community that need assistance,” said Utter. Heishman said the FCSO should have some sort of fundraiser next year for Shop With a Cop, whether it be “Ride the Lightning” or something else. “We’ve got a lot of community buy-in with this, and it’s amazing,” he said of the fundraiser. “I know for Shop With a Cop, they bring in over 200 kids a year and that’s a direct result of money that is raised for the year.” People are welcome to give for Fulton County Shop With a Cop year-round by dropping off funds at the FCSO or Rochester Police Department. Checks should be made to FOP 143, with a note they are for Shop With a Cop.

TOP FUNDRAISER — Fulton County Sheriff Travis Heishman presented Levi Brown of LCB Enterprises with a trophy on Thursday, May 14, for raising the most funds through the “Ride the Lightning” event for Fulton County Shop With a Cop. From left are Brown and Heishman.

READY TO BE SHOCKED — The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office hosted its third annual “Ride the Lightning” fundraiser for Fulton County Shop With a Cop recently. As Andy Brubaker of Mike’s Trash was the community volunteer who raised the least amount of money, he was Tased outside the FCSO on Thursday, May 14. Shown from left are FCSO Deputy Ryan Haney, Brubaker and FCSO Deputy Jay Salientes before Brubaker was Tased.
