What do a superpowered squirrel and a girl distrustful of the world have in common? They’re the title characters in the children’s book “Flora and Ulysses: The Illuminated Adven-
tures” by Kate DiCamillo. All Caston Elementary School students and staff enjoyed the book recently via One School, One Book. Thanks again to a grant from the Cass County Community Foundation, the school participated in the program for a second year. All students and staff received copies of the book to read, and the school had multiple activities connected to One School, One Book over the past month, including crafts. A related school carnival was on Saturday, Feb. 28. Kids and staff followed along on Wednesday, Feb. 25, as Caston Elementary Principal Jennifer Lukens read the last part of “Flora and Ulysses” in a school assembly. Ulysses himself made an appearance at the assembly via senior Marleigh Woodruff dressed in costume. Several other students dressed as Ulysses for the assembly, in-

cluding fifth grader Addison Malott. “I really like it,” she said of “Flora and Ulysses.” Malott added she preferred this year’s choice for One School, One Book to last year’s of “Charlotte’s Web.” Caston School Corp. Curriculum Director Shelly Sarver once again helped bring One School, One Book to the school. “It’s honestly something that I’ve wanted to do for 10 years, but it was just trying to find the funding for it, so this has just been like a dream to get this up and going for our school and to have the kids love reading and the joy of reading and how much fun you can have with a book,” she said. Sarver said One School, One Book has “been a wonderful program for our kids.” “We have kids who didn’t use to like to read who are loving the love of reading,” she said.
FOLLOWING ALONG — Caston Elementary School students Gabby Malott, left, and Sofia Aguilar read the last part of “Flora and Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures” at a school assembly for One School, One Book on Wednesday, Feb. 25. That day was also Pajama Day at school.
