By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer
The Fulton County Amateur Radio Club offers both a hobby and service opportunities for people, say its members. About 20 people are in the group, which meets at 7 p.m. the second Thursday of each month at the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office. The club’s leadership includes President Brian Johnson, Vice President Jerry Hoch and Secretary-Treasurer Tom Murray. Doug Garvison serves as the emergency coordinator for the Amateur Radio Emergency Service, which operates in connection with the club. Anyone is welcome to check out club meetings, but to become a member is $20 for individuals

and $30 for families. People don’t have to be 18 to join, but must pass a written exam to get their license from the Federal Communications Commission before actually operating a radio, said Johnson. They must also renew their license every 10 years. He said there are also licensing levels, so people can broadcast over more frequencies if they get more licensing. The club’s activities include their participation in the National Association for Amateur Radio’s Field Day, held each year on the fourth weekend of June. The club will be at Richland Restoration Nature Park, on CR 450N, west of old US 31, north of Rochester, at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 27. Continued on page 2
