Fulton County ABATE focuses on motorcycle safety, education, giving back
By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer
Fulton County American Bikers Aimed Toward Education seeks to help others as well as educate about motorcycles and their safety, said Kat Martin. Martin is one of three county representatives for Fulton County ABATE. The others are Robert Adkins and Alexys Martin, with the remaining leaders being Secretary Kera Martin and Treasurer J.D. Gourley. ABATE marked its 50th anniversary last year in Indiana. The organization does much advocacy at the Statehouse on behalf of motorcyclists, said Kat Martin. She said ABATE fights for people to work on their own motorcycles instead of taking them

to shops, the right to wear or not wear a helmet and safety for motorcycles around vehicles. ABATE also teaches people skills they need for motorcycle endorsements, said Kat Martin. She added the group also helps others through its Treasures for Kids program at Christmas. Kat Martin said Fulton County ABATE partners with different organizations to give away toys to local children in need. The group also does several events for fun each year. Earlier this year, it held a pool tournament, and its Porker Ride was on May 3. During the latter, motorcyclists took a group ride, with people recognized for being the oldest and youngest riders and coming from the farthest away. Fulton County ABATE’s Party
Lite Jam will occur on Friday, Aug. 21, through Sunday, Aug. 23, at the Fulton County Fairgrounds. The event includes live music. A bike show will be at noon Saturday, Aug. 22, with registration at 11 a.m. Kat Martin said there probably will also be bike games. The cost is $20 for members and $25 for nonmembers. Nonmembers are allowed if they are 21 and older. Gates will open at noon on Friday, Aug. 21. Camping is free, with a cost of $40 if people bring a camper. People are also welcome to check out Fulton County ABATE meetings. They are 1 p.m. the third Sunday of every month at American Legion Post 36 of Rochester.
If people wish to join the club, the membership cost is $25 a person or $45 a couple. People must be 18 to join. Kat Martin said those without motorcycles are also welcome to join. Benefits of membership include admission to various events as well as life insurance and legal help. “We have a very strong family orientation,” added Kat Martin of the club. “We count each other as family.” She invites others to get involved in ABATE. “It’s fun,” she said.
