Those with a green thumb or an interest in plants are wel-
come to join the Rochester Garden Club. The club meets at 6:30 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month from April to October at members’ homes and other locations, with a Christmas party also held in December. Currently there are 15 members, with anyone welcome to join for a $10 annual fee. People don’t have to live in Rochester or Fulton County to join the club either, and there are no age restrictions. Those who are interested may stop by the next meeting set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, at Zellers Beautiful Blooms, 878 N. 200W, Rochester, or call President Deb Hamilton at

(813) 363-6694. The RGC is also led by Vice President Nancy Trier, Secretary Mary O’Gara and Treasurer Susan Skidmore. Meetings include a hint, members taking turns speaking on a topic and a roll call question, all related to gardening. People may also give money to be entered in a raffle for a garden-connected prize. Aside from meetings, the club also goes on field trips such as to Linton’s Nursery, in Elkhart County. During the summer, club members select Top Gardeners of the Month, covering both individuals and businesses in Rochester. The members also help landscape
for homes built through Fulton County Habitat for Humanity. Phyllis Wisely said she’s been a RGC member since the club was formed in the 1960s or 1970s. “I’ve always enjoyed it, and I always learn something new,” she said. “I really enjoy the people in it.” New member Maggie Walsh said she joined the club as she “had been in garden clubs previously at my other homes.” “I enjoy the camaraderie, and I am really starting anew here in my garden,” she said. “It’s nice to have the ability to get plants from other members and also to learn about new ones that I might not know about. We’ve been on a field trip already, and
it was great, and everybody was very friendly, and I’m really enjoying it so far.” Dot Showley joined the RGC “at least 30 or more years ago.” She noted the club has regenerated recently with more members joining “who are energetic and have new ideas.” Hamilton called the club “a social outlet, but ... also an opportunity to do community service projects in town, beautify the town and recognize people who do beautify the town.” She said everyone is welcome to join the club. “You don’t have to be a professional gardener,” she said. “You can be a beginner, and we’ll try to help you out.”
