Summer Parks Program sees 10% increase in kids Text and Photos By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer More kids were part of the Rochester Summer Parks Program this year. Program Director Lindsay Barts said 10% more kids were part of the RSPP, with numbers running from 75 to 100 each week. Children ages 6-12 plus a few under 6 played games and visited the Rochester City Pool, Fulton County Public Library’s Rochester branch and Potawatomi Wildlife Park in Tippecanoe. Kids also bowled at Country Lanes in Rochester, gardened and did “native art activities,” said Barts. Rochester Community Schools provided breakfast and lunch for the kids each day. New this year, thanks to an Indiana Arts Commission grant, kids learned about the Potawatomi people who lived in the area and their being removed via the Trail of Death in “a kid-friendly way,” said Barts. As part of that, kids helped paint

a mural created by Bill Shewman featuring the Potawatomi people with the Manitou Monster and heard from the historical fiction book “Two Moon Journey: The Potawatomi Trail of Death” by Peggy King Anderson. The Summer Parks Program began in June and concluded Friday, July 17, with the Parkival. Kids played dodgeball and soccer, had their faces painted and enjoyed food. Along with Barts, those helping with the Summer Parks Program included Assistant Director Abbi Cronan and 19 high school staff members. She said parents made snacks for the program. Barts also thanked kids’ parents and Rochester High School National Honor Society members for offering their help for a fish fry fundraiser for the program. She said it was important to continue the parks program because “kids love it.” “It’s not an easy job, but it makes it so worth it because people are so grateful,” said Barts.
