food pantry receives $15K grant for additional storage

Text and Photos By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer United We Stand Ministries now has the funds for additional storage for its food pantry in Akron. The nonprofit received a $15,000 grant from the Fulton County Community Foundation for a new storage building which will be 14 feet by 24 feet. The project was also funded by community donations and an additional grant, said United We Stand President Bonnie Dunbar. Sunrise Structures of Rochester will complete the work. Dunbar said the food pantry has served people since 2004 when it opened in the Akron Church of God’s basement. It moved in 2022 to a spot near Akron United Methodist Church, with United We Stand getting ownership of its building in 2023. The new building will supplement the current one, storing food, with Dunbar noting storage is “so cramped” currently. People from Newcastle and Henry Townships may visit the pantry once a month, with it open 2-4 p.m. every Thursday. Dunbar said clients can shop more often if there’s an emergency. A few clients are allowed into the building at a time to use shopping carts to pick up their food. Dunbar said clients need only show proof of residency in one of the two townships. The shelves are stocked with a variety of food and drinks as well as toiletries. Dunbar said there’s also a free shelf with miscellaneous items such as shoes donated to United We Stand that people may take from. She advised those coming in that they don’t have to be in rush

Items for the pantry come in from various sources, said Dunbar. Akron Elementary School students have food drives for the pantry, with items also coming in from Food Finders Food Bank, the Milford Food Bank and Continued on page 4
