By WENDY MELTON Staff writer Christmas is a time for giving. With the holidays over, closets and cabinets are often stuffed to overflowing. This is the time when the phrase “out with the old, in with the new” begins to make sense. Going through closets and getting rid of clothes and shoes you no longer wear or that no longer fit, will open up space for new clothing items received as gifts. Families with children often find themselves with boxes of toys that have been outgrown or no longer hold a child’s interest. Board games are often replaced with video games. The same is true with children’s clothing. Outfits may be worn once or twice before they get shoved to the back of the closet

and replaced with larger sizes. Finding a place to store all the extras can be a daunting task. Go through cabinets, closets, and cupboards and remove anything you no longer need or use. Organizations like the Hope Program of Fulton County, the Salvation Army, Goodwill, Huntington House and True Purpose Ministries will accept a wide variety of items, including household goods, clothing and personal items. Local churches like The Cross and the Heart to Heart Nazarene Church, also accept donations of clothing and other items. Bud Johnson of Life Care Center said, “We’re always looking for donations.” Residents benefit in many ways from the donations received from the community. “Books are never bad. We have a lot of residents who like
to read, Johnson said. “Residents can use clothes as the seasons change. Many don’t necessarily have the money to buy new clothes. They may gain weight or lose weight. Any donations really help, including puzzles and puzzle books. Donations can be dropped off any time.” The Outlet Youth Center will take donations as well. Located at 491 Apache Drive, Rochester, the center is open Monday through Thursday and offers activities after school for children up to 17 years of age. The center also hosts the Fifth Quarter program for high school age student. Donations of toys, snacks and other items are welcome during business hours. when donating excess items to nonprofit organizations such as Goodwill and the Salvation Army, helps boost the local economy throughout the year. Swapping old items for new is something everyone can do. Most organizations accept items that are in good condition and free of stains or damage. Deep clean your home. After gifts are opened, they can easily be put away without struggling to make room for them or find them a home. Keeping your home free of clutter has many benefits. It reduces the risk of accidents and improves the air quality inside your home. Check your closets and cabinets throughout the year and donate items regularly. Paying it forward will make you feel good and will help keep your home in good shape.
