Ten years ago, Beaver Dam Community Church’s Wheels on Fire Cancer Crusaders held its first-ever Smash Out Cancer fundraiser in Akron. As it marks a milestone with the event this year, the nonprofit wishes to keep the focus on the people it helps, those impacted by cancer in the Kosciusko County and Fulton County area, said Wheels on Fire Chairwoman Christina Morehouse. Smash Out Cancer occurs this year 4-9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at the Akron Community Center, 815 Rural St. Entertainment starts at 4:30 p.m., with a live auction at 6:30 p.m., the pie auction after that and the candle lighting ceremony ending the event. The latter is to honor those who are battling cancer or who’ve passed away from it. Food will also be available for purchase. Morehouse said Mark Vice will perform again this year. Years before Wheels on Fire held its first Smash Out Cancer in 2016, the group participated in the American Cancer Society’s Continued on page 2
