RIBBON-CUTTING — The City of Rochester held a ribbon-cutting for the new senior apartment building, Hawkins Homestead at 1329 College Ave. Wednesday, Aug. 5, the date of an open house for the property. Shown are those with Keller Development of Fort Wayne, its property management company, New Generation Management, various entities that provided financial support for the project, and Rochester Mayor Trent Odell. In front, is Louie Hawkins, a Keller Development family member

after whom the property was named. In the back from left are Cinnaire’s Keith G. Broadnax; First Federal Savings Bank’s Evan Gottschalk; Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority’s Hayden Wiesinger; 1st Source Bank’s Mark Gould and Cecile Weir; Keller Development’s Dawn Gallaway; New Generation Management’s Tammy Brandt; Keller Development’s Jerry Keller; and Odell.

Hawkins Homestead opens in Rochester Text and Photos By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer Senior citizens moving to the new Rochester apartment complex Hawkins Homestead are often “coming from selling their homes,” said Hawkins Homestead Property Manager Ryann Smith. She said she hopes the apartment building can “feel like ... exactly the home they are coming from.” The City of Rochester had a ribbon-cutting for the new 55-and-older property at 1329 College Ave. Wednesday, Aug. 5. It took about a year for the 35-unit property to be built. Hawkins Homestead was developed by Keller Development of Fort Wayne and is overseen by the company’s New Generation Management. Eight of the units have already been rented, with six on hold. All of the apartments have two bedrooms and include a washer and dryer. The property allows pets, includes a small dog park and raised garden beds and has a theater room, game and craft room, fitness room and dog wash station.

Rents range from about $500 to $900. Smith said the property works with housing assistance if needed. People may find rental applications and more information by going to newgenmgnt.com and searching for Hawkins Homestead. They also may call (260) 415-3709. Before the ribbon-cutting, Keller Development’s Dawn Gallaway spoke. “As a family, we pride ourselves on developing projects like this in communities where we believe there is a need,” she said. Gallaway said the project dated to March 2024 when Rochester leaders “welcomed” them in. The Calhoun family sold the land to Keller Development, and Gallaway said Dustin Calhoun was part of the first meeting with the city. “We knew that there were seniors or people who wanted to stay in Rochester and have an affordable place to live,” she said. “To see (the building) here today ... I think it looks beautiful.” Gallaway added Keller Development staff were “really excited to have it here and feel like the seniors are really going to enjoy it.” Continued on page 2
