For 50 years, Barbara McGee has served Rochester Community Schools as a substitute teacher. Her efforts have netted her a street in the city bearing her name. At the Rochester Board of Public Works and Safety meeting on Thursday, April 2, held one day earlier due to Good Friday, board members certified the street would bear McGee’s name. Her new street will be created off an extension, yet to be developed, of Rouch Place Drive near Walmart, where the city hopes to bring a hotel. The meeting was held at Rochester High School’s auditorium as part of Rochester Mayor Trent Odell’s effort to get younger people interested in local government. “I had told the (RHS) Student Council I was going to give them a challenge,” said Odell. “And that challenge was to name a street that we were getting ready to put in.” Each class voted on different names, with the senior class’ choice of McGee Street chosen as the winner. McGee, 90, of Rochester, sat in a special chair onstage while the meeting was conducted, with students Carson Paulik, Grant Clark, Grant Bailey and Evan Rudd presenting her with the street sign bearing her name. The students cited McGee’s “positive mindset and her lively manner (as touching) so many lives in our community.” McGee said she “had no idea” she was going to be honored when her family asked her to come to RHS Thursday, April 2.
