If people wish to see some of their favorite Disney characters brought to life, they’re in luck this weekend. Rochester High School Tri-Epsilon is presenting the musical “The Little Mermaid” at 7 p.m. Friday, April 24, and Saturday, April 25, in the RHS Auditorium. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. each night. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students and free for those 4 and younger. Tickets may be purchased during the school day at the RHS office and at the door the night of the performances. “The Little Mermaid” follows the story of mermaid Ariel as she seeks to be human to be with Prince Eric, and in doing so, makes a deal with the evil sea witch Ursula. RHS Tri-Epsilon Director Brenda McClain said she and musical directors Deanna Gualtieri and Linnea Bendes picked “The Little Mermaid” as the spring play as they “were looking for a musical that would be fun and maybe even nostalgic.” “Everyone knows ‘The Little Mermaid,’ and we thought we probably had a good group of students for the cast,” she said. “I am convinced more than ever that we have the

perfect cast (and crew)!” McClain said she hoped students “grew, gained confidence and courage and found their voice, both literally and figuratively” through the play. “I cannot tell you how much joy it gives me to see a student begin to feel comfortable enough to try new things, to loosen up a bit and then become bold,” she said. “I hope students learn leadership skills: like when our ‘seasoned’ students take ‘newbies’ under their wings and show them the ropes.” McClain added she wants the kids “to learn how to look at challenges as problems to solve, to work with those around them and to become resourceful. “It takes the entire group to pull a production together,” she said. “There are fun times as well as extremely challenging times. We have to learn to communicate, take breaks when needed, apologize when needed and then get back at it and make it happen, because, like life, ‘the show must go on.’” She said she hoped the audience wanted to come back to future Tri-Epsilon performances after viewing “The Little Mermaid.” “I hope it sparks or continues to fan the flame of a love of live theater in general in our audience members,” said McClain. “I would love for them to go and support our surrounding school and civic theater programs and buy

There is nothing quite like live theater!” During the performances, audience members can also get on in the action. Mini flashlights will be sold at the door for two for $1, and people may shine them toward the stage during a scene as “fireflies.” McClain said people may also send “Break a Leg” notes for $1 each before the show to the cast or crew member of their choosing. Those may be bought at the door. Continued on page 3
