Gary RailCats offer summer fun in the region Text and Photos By CARRIE STEINWEG Feature Writer Summer has arrived and we’re back to that time of year with two things that naturally go together: summer and baseball. For close to a quarter-century, the Gary SouthShore RailCats have been entertaining families and providing a fun, affordable way to enjoy America’s pastime together. An independent team of the American Association, the Gary SouthShore RailCats debuted in 2002 with a season played entirely on the road. In 2003, their home, the U.S. Steel Yard was completed and they’ve continued playing there ever since. Originally part of the Northern League, they were the only team to reach the championship series five years in a row.
The mission of the Gary SouthShore RailCats is to “provide Northwest Indiana with an exceptional level of fun, affordable family entertainment in a safe and enjoyable atmosphere,” according to the website. “We offer an affordable entertainment option for families and there is always something fun going on at the ballpark,” said general manager Anthony Giammanco. Giammanco joined the RailCats in 2021 and is in his sixth season as general manager. He began as an intern with the Schaumburg Boomers in 2017 working from January through April. On the last day of his internship, he was offered the box office manager role and at the end of the 2019 season he was promoted to assistant general manager with the Boomers. Both Schaumburg and Gary SouthShore Continued on page 2
