Ryan’s Place: A space for grieving, growing and community
By ANIKA YODER Feature Writer For over two decades Ryan’s Place has provided Elkhart County with grief counseling services for individuals and families experiencing the losses of their loved ones. Starting out in 2002 with meeting in churches that offered to host its programming, Ryan’s Place has since expanded to its own location, which opened last September. Founded by Rex and Nancy Gleim, Ryan’s Place began development after the Gleim’s loss of their son, Ryan, in an auto accident in 1992. In the aftermath of losing a child, Ryan’s younger brother was not able to connect with counseling offered in the area after the
loss, according to Rex. Seeking grief services outside of the county, Nancy along with their son attended a conference that was focused on the topic of grief centers. After returning, the Gleim’s decided they wanted to open a space up to the county that would offer people a place to grieve and talk about their experiences with mourning those they have lost. “Nancy and (some) counselors went up to Michigan to visit a center there. I wasn’t able to go. And came back all excited about it…” Rex said. “But they insisted that we get a group together to at least do some planning beforehand. And so we met (for) about a year and a half... about one Saturday a month, just trying to decide
