We’ve all seen the videos on social media. It’s Christmas morning and the kids rush downstairs to open their presents. Mom and dad direct to one in particular, out of which pops an adorable puppy or kitten, ready for their new home. In most real-life instances, the decision has been thought out and planned. Unfortunately, in some cases, it hasn’t been, beyond purchasing the requisite bed, food, toys and collar for Fido or Fluffy from the local pet supply store. “Pets aren’t toys,” said Jordyn Caviggiola of the Fulton County Animal Center. “They’re not objects to give to someone who isn’t ready for the commitment. It’s a lifelong commitment to love them. Pets love their people more than they think and it can be really traumatic for them if they have to be given up. The same is true for non-traditional pets you get at the pet store, like reptiles and amphibians.” It’s not all doom and gloom, however, if you want to provide a new home for a dog, cat or other animal during the Christmas season. “On the plus side, I do love people giving people a new pet at the holidays, as long as they do their research and are prepared for the commitment,” added FCAC Executive Director Janet Showley. “I appreciate when families come in to the shelter together to select a dog or a cat. It should be a family decision on picking the right breed or particular animal for the family’s personality and lifestyle. Pets add to the holiday spirit of giving a homeless pet a second chance. It’s great to see the smile on the kids’ faces when the decide on a pet.” Showley does note that there can be pitfalls, as well, however. “People need to realize that a pet is a full-time obligation. They will still be there after the holidays, which certainly can be a good thing as long as they continue to get the care and attention they need and deserve. The financial and time commitment isn’t just during the week of Christmas. They can cost hundreds of dollars every month,” Regardless of whether a pet is chosen during the holidays or at some other point in the year, Showley encourages people to do their research on breeds. She said it’s important the new pet fits your lifestyle and will fit in with any other pets in your home. As an example, she said if you already have three senior cats in your family then it’s probably not a good idea to get a rambunctious and playful kitten. Another example is your family’s lifestyle. ways gone for work, school and extra-curricular activities that don’t bring you home until well into the evening, that needs to be taken into consideration when choosing to whether or not add a particular animal to the family’s schedule. “These are reasons we have a ‘foster to adopt’ program here at FCAC,” Showley said. “You can choose an animal to bring to your home for a two-week trial. It allows people to see if it is a good fit for them before an adoption.” Additionally, FCAC is one of more than 200 shelters in 40 states currently participating in the Bissell Pet Foundation’s “Empty the Shelters Holiday Hope” campaign. Through this Saturday, Dec. 20, any adoptable dog or cat at FCAC is only $25. “If now isn’t the right time for you to give a pet a home, you can help them in other ways,” added Showley. “You can donate supplies to the shelter to help with their care, or you can sponsor an adoption of one or more of the animals. Your donations are tax deductible.” As long as you are able to properly support and care for a pet, at the end of the day it’s worth it!” concluded Caviggiola.

Lyons views serving in the FOE as way of life %\ /$85,( /(&+/,71(5 6WDII :ULWHU “My father was part of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and when I was 21 years old, he signed me up,” stated Mike Lyons, Rochester. “I’ve been part of the Rochester Eagles 852 for the past 36 years. I’m called a golden eagle. Because I’ve been serving for so long, I no longer have to pay dues. My wife Lois is part of the Eagles Auxiliary. To us, being part of the FOE is a way of life.” Lyons has been Eagles district treasurer for 23 years. He’s also a zone trustee. This year he became the state chaplain. “I’ve had many offices through the years. I’ve served locally in every office except secretary/treasurer and conductor. Lois and I have been in charge of the state convention in Indianapolis for the past 26 years. We coordinate the food, fun and recreational activities. My nickname is the Zone 2 party guy. It’s great having a wife to work right alongside me.” Lyons met Lois in a rather unique way. “I worked a couple

jobs. Besides my day job, I did 25 yards with a push mower and had a carpet cleaning business. I needed some help and hired one of Lois’ sons. I told him I’d give him an extra $25 to get me a date with his mom. He took me up on it.” Their first time out was a dinner date. “I was taking Lois home in my truck going about 25 miles per hour. She asked me if there was anything wrong with the vehicle. I told her I was going slow because I didn’t want the evening to end.” He believes opposites do attract. “Lois was a Sunday school teacher. I lived life pretty much in the fast lane. But since our marriage in 1985, we’ve been perfect complements to each other.” Since Lyons is the state chaplain, he often confers with Lois about his duties. “It’s my duty to pray at the state convention, both as we open and close. I also read my ritual speech during the meetings. I’m called upon to pray over meals as well.” Being an Eagle has stretched

Lyons. “Sometimes I’m called upon to speak in front of 2,000 people at a national convention. That scares me. But I still do it.” According to Lyons, the FOE is all about people helping people. “We’re a community of friends everywhere we go. For example, when Lois and I travel, the first stop we make is to the local FOE And that’s not just in the U.S. I’m a member of a Canadian branch of the FOE as well as our local 852.” Recruitment is the duty and privilege of every lodge member. “We’re revamping our Rochester lodge to attract more young people. We not only feature a pool table and jukebox but are painting the walls and installing new carpeting.” Even though members enjoy recruiting new people, they want men who are helpful and law abiding. “Our goal is to work together to make our community, state and nation a better place. We’re looking for people who will help us.” One of Lyons’ hobbies is collecting eagle birds. “I have about 60 or 70 of them I display throughout our home. It is very special when we spot one soaring across the sky in our area.”

Good Neighbors Good Neighbors is a column in which readers share friendly advice. To ask or answer questions, write the Shopping Guide News, Good Neighbors, P.O. Box 188, Milford, IN 46542; fax 800-886-3796; or e-mail abias@the-papers.com. Please no phone calls.

Editor’s Note: The Good Neighbors column is for people looking for hard-to-find or old items or for people seeking advice, not for items you can find in a local store or sell through the help of a classified ad. —o—

Used eyeglasses Good neighbors: Goshen’s Martin’s grocery store (just east of US 33 and Bashor Road) has a box located at the front desk for used eyeglasses. Used eyeglasses and hearing aides can be donated to your local Lions Club. There should be a club near you.

Chain saw sharpening Good neighbors: To the person who is looking for someone to sharpen their chain saw chains, Razor Sharpening does that. They are located at 4133 E. County Line Road, Bremen, (574) 7730303, ext. 3. There is a young Amish fellow who did a fine job for me. He is located at 9765 N. SR 19, Nappanee, (574) 646-2085. Sharpened chains for 40 years plus in Goshen. Call (574) 532-2504. Leave messages, will return calls.

Candied sweet potatoes Good neighbors: Here is a recipe for candied sweet potatoes: 3 pounds sweet potatoes, 1/2 cup packed brown sugar, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/4 cup butter (cubed), 1/4 cup corn syrup. Optional: chopped walnuts and minced fresh thyme. Place the whole, unpeeled sweet potatoes in a Dutch oven and cover with water. Cover and bring to boil; simmer gently 30-45 minutes or until potatoes can be easily pierced with the tip of a sharp knife. While the potatoes cool, preheat oven to 375 degrees. When sweet potatoes are cool enough to handle, peel the potatoes and cut into wedges. Place in an ungreased 11 by 7-inch baking dish. Sprinkle with the brown sugar and cinnamon. Dot with butter; drizzle with corn syrup. Bake uncovered 15-20 minutes or until bubbly, basting with the sauce occasionally. Candied sweet potatoes: Bake the potatoes in the oven or microwave. My wife bakes them in the microwave and then puts them in a bowl with a towel over them to let them steam and cool. When cool enough to handle, she peels them and slices them into several pieces and places them in a 9 by 13-inch pan. Use the size that works best for the amount you are making. She then puts a stick of butter, some corn syrup (she doesn’t measure) and some brown sugar in a pan and heats it on the stove until the butter is melted and it is all combined. She pours that over the sweet potatoes and then puts them in the oven (that day or she refrigerates them and cooks them the next day) at maybe 350 degrees. Sometimes she puts them in a different temp oven along with something else she is cooking. When the potatoes are hot and bubbly, she adds a generous amount of marshmallows (she prefers the miniature ones) and puts them back into the oven until the marshmallows are melted and slightly browned. They are good leftover still cold from the refrigerator.

Cornbread dressing Good neighbors: Here is a recipe for cornbread dressing: 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1 cup cornmeal, 2 tablespoons sugar, 1 tablespoon baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1 large egg (lightly beaten), 2/3 cup water, 1/3 cup fat-free milk, 2 tablespoons canola oil. Dressing: 10 slices bread (toasted and cubed), 3 cups chopped celery, 1 1/3 cups chopped onion, 1 teaspoon canola oil, 3 teaspoons reduced-sodium chicken bouillon granules or 1 1/2 vegetable bouillon cubes, 1/4 cup boiling water, 1 can (14 1/2 ounce) reduced-sodium chicken broth or vegetable broth, 2 large eggs (lightly beaten), 2 tea-

spoons dried parsley flakes, 1 1/2 teaspoons rubbed sage, 1 teaspoon each poultry seasoning, dried basil and rosemary (crushed), 1/2 teaspoon each salt and dried thyme. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. For the cornbread, in a bowl, combine flour, cornmeal, sugar, baking powder and salt. In a small bowl, whisk egg, water, milk and oil. Stir into flour mixture just until blended. Transfer to a greased 8-inch square baking pan. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool in pan on a wire rack. Crumble into a large bowl. Reduce oven to 350 degrees. Stir bread cubes into the cornbread crumbs. In a nonstick skillet, cook celery and onion in oil over medium-high heat until tender, about 6 minutes. Stir into cornbread mixture. In a large bowl, dissolve bouillon in 1/4 cup boiling water. Add broth, eggs and seasonings. Pour over the cornbread mixture; toss to coat. Transfer to a greased 13 by 9 by 2-inch baking dish. Cover; bake 20 minutes. Uncover and bake till lightly browned, 25-30 minutes.

What are some of the myths regarding vaccination shots? %\ +$55< :(%% 3KDUPDFLVW :HEE·V )DPLO\ 3KDUPDF\ “What are some of the myths or disinformation you have heard regarding the vaccination shots and booster shot?” This is a great question. It goes directly to one of the biggest challenges we face in a free society during a deadly pandemic. Disinformation and the ease at which it can be shared has resulted in many people resisting to get the vaccine and practice safe practices such as social distancing and wearing face masks. This has also led to many preventable hospitalizations, debilitating illness and deaths. Providing the news has always been a “for profit business.” Mainstream television and radio news outlets, newspapers and magazines have always generated advertising revenue by providing news information. Today, the public has many additional sources of information thanks to the internet. The difference with social media is there are many who will say anything if it attracts attention. The popular social media platforms have huge followings. They designed the sites to keep the user entertained and engaged. They use algorithms to keep the user on their platform as long as possible. The longer the user remains on the platform the more advertising revenue they can generate. Social media platforms create programs to drive content toward each internet user based on user likes and engagement — regardless of accuracy and truth. Platforms have recently taken steps to filter out disinformation, but many believe that makes the disinformation even more credible. A recent study identified one dozen specific anti-vax influencers responsible for 65% of all the disinformation on social media. These 12 influencers are responsible for more than 800,000 posts or shares. Many of the 12 were using the platform to market their own businesses and/or nutritional supplement lines. Their greed has resulted in a lot of mistrust and hesitancy. The consequence has been thousands of people killed by COVID. False claims of vaccines containing toxins, microchips and aborted fetus were common. The more sensational the claim, the more it got shared and liked. There are also a group of people who refuse to get vaccinated because they feel like they are being forced to do so. They believe in their right to refuse and strongly oppose mandates. And I get it. We all are in the middle of this debate and it certainly has polarized people into two groups. Unfortunately, it has been politicized into a binary choice about individual freedom. Instead, the conversation simply needs to be about health choices. All the other information, believable or not, should be ignored. The most important question is this: Do we take our chances or do we get the vaccine? This virus is so

+$55< :(%% contagious no one will escape exposure. As of November, more than 7.8 billion vaccine doses have been given worldwide. While any vaccine has some risk and potential side effects, the health risks of these vaccines have been proven to be much less than the health risks of getting or spreading COVID. According to the Indiana Department of Health, unvaccinated individuals account for 98.1% of Indiana’s 1.08 million total infections, 99.96% of hospitalizations and 99.98% of deaths since the first case was diagnosed in Indiana. Studies show people with a previous infection are five times

more likely to get a second infection than a vaccinated person. The key with these vaccines is their ability to create immunity to the virus’s spike protein. It is difficult to know if a naturally acquired immunity from previous infection targets spike protein. This unknown make variants more likely to cause a second infection. I strongly recommend everyone age 5 and older get fully vaccinated and, in most situations, get a booster dose when it is recommended. To find your preferred vaccine in your county, visit www.Vaccines.gov, text your ZIP code to 438829 or call (800) 232-0233. For a vaccination at a Webb’s Family Pharmacy location, go to www.WebbRx.com to schedule your shot.

Let’s study the Bible

Isaiah’s outward look (Read Isaiah 6:1-13)

“Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.” (Isaiah 6:8) Everything to this point was a preparation. Now God can call Isaiah and use him to preach his word. The prophet %\ 5(9 521 is no longer 385.(< wrapped up in his own needs; he wants to do the will of God. He is no longer burdened by sin; he has been cleansed. He is no longer discouraged; he knows God is on the throne. Now he is ready to go to work.

“Go and tell!” This is God’s commission to us today. “You shall be witnesses to me ... to the end of the earth” (Acts 1:8). It was not an easy commission God gave to the prophet, for the nation was in no mood to hear his messages of sin and judgment. In chapter 1, God pictures the nation as a sick body, covered with wounds and rotting sores, and as a stubborn and rebellious animal, too ignorant to listen to his own master. In chapter 5, the nation is pictured as a beautiful vineyard that did not produce good grapes. When people are rich, full, and satisfied, they do not believe judgment is coming. Verses 9-10 are quoted seven times in the New Testament. Is God saying he deliberately blinds people and condemns them? No, not at all. What he is saying is the word of God has this hardening and blinding effect on sinners who will not listen and yield. The sun that melts the ice also hardens

the clay. They had sealed their own doom. The servant of God is to proclaim God’s word regardless of how people respond. It took a great deal of faith on Isaiah’s part to obey such a commission. “How long should I preach and therefore produce these tragic results?” he asks. “Until I am finished with my judgment on the land,” the Lord replies. This kind of judgment is announced in Isaiah 1:7-9 and 2:12-22. But the Lord will save a remnant, even though the nation will be removed far away into captivity (Isaiah 6:12-13). This prophecy applied immediately to their captivity, but it also pictures God’s dealings with Israel in the last days, when a small remnant of Jewish people will believe during the Tribulation period. They will do the preaching in that day. When Isaiah finally walked out of the temple, he was no longer a mourner — he was a missionary. He was not merely a spectator; he was a participant. God had equipped him to do the job: Isaiah had seen the Lord, he had seen himself, and he had seen the need. Knowing God was on the throne, and that God had called and commissioned him, he was ready to preach the word and be faithful unto death. What an example for us to follow today. She has been member of Key Club, Fulton County Youth Leadership Academy, Students Against Destructive Decisions, yearbook business/chief editor, National Honor Society, HNAC English team, student advisory committee, Caston Christian Club, cross county, track and basketball while in school. mittee submitted the top finalists to Independent Colleges of Indiana Inc. for the final selection of the recipient. “The quality of applications this year was amazing, you can tell these students dedicate a lot of time and effort into their schoolwork and extracurricular activities,” said Alison Heyde, NICF scholarship coordinator. Lilly Endowment created the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program for the 1998-99 school year and has supported the program every year since with tuition grants totaling in excess of $439 million. More than 5,000 Indiana students have received the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship since the program’s inception. The primary purposes of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program are to help raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana, to increase awareness of the beneficial roles Indiana community foundations can play in their communities and to encourage and support the efforts of current and past Lilly Endowment Community Scholars to engage with each other and with Indiana business, governmental, educational, nonprofit and civic leaders to improve the quality of life in Indiana generally and in local communities throughout the state. Lilly Endowment Inc. is an Indianapolis-based private philanthropic foundation created in 1937 by J.K. Lilly Sr. and his sons Eli and J.K. Jr. through gifts of stock in their pharmaceutical business, Eli Lilly and Company. Although the gifts of stock remain a financial bedrock of the Endowment, it is a separate entity from the company, with a distinct governing board, staff and location. In keeping with the founders’ wishes, the Endowment supports the causes of community development, education and religion. The Endowment funds significant programs throughout the United States, especially in the field of religion. However, it maintains a special commitment to its founders’ hometown and home state. Since 1997, Independent Colleges of Indiana has administered the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program statewide with funding provided by Lilly Endowment. Founded in 1948, ICI serves as the collective voice for the state’s 29 private, nonprofit colleges and universities. ICI institutions employ more than 22,000 Hoosiers and generate a total local economic impact of more than $5 billion annually. Students at ICI colleges have Indiana’s highest four-year, on-time graduation rates, and ICI institutions produce 30 percent of Indiana’s bachelor’s degrees while enrolling 20 percent of its undergraduates. The other students who were finalists and interviewed for the scholarship were Reagan Becker of Rochester High School, Elena Bode of Rochester High School, Cheney Canada of Tippecanoe Valley High School and Peyton Hiatt of Rochester High School.

The holiday season has arrived in Rochester. Local business have gotten into the spirit and are sharing the joy of Christmas. You can take a stroll downtown Main Street and enjoy many window displays, sharing different winter scenes and holiday spirit. When entering some of the businesses, the views don’t stop at the windows. You may catch some elaborate decorated Christmas trees and other festive decor when entering through their doors. Centennial Park on the corner of Ninth and Main can offer a beautiful setting for some classic holiday photos. Take in the scene of Nativity on the courthouse lawn. If you are over the age of 21, you can share stories while sipping your favorite drink at the VFW while being surrounded by a small Christmas village. Take time to visit area businesses and take a look at the holiday decorations for yourself.

Baxter family honored with Lifetime Philanthropy Award As part of #GivingTuesday, the Fulton County Community Foundation created the Lifetime Philanthropy Award to honor those who have made a positive impact in the community through philanthropic efforts. The award was presented on #GivingTuesday, Nov. 30, to LeeAnn Pollock on behalf of the Baxter family. The Baxter family created the first ever fund, the Baxter Inc. Fund, at the Northern Indiana Community Foundation. Over the years, the family is responsible for starting a number of funds that go to support different causes in the community. In addition to the Baxter Inc. Fund, family members have also created the Ernest O. Baxter Fund, M.M. Fund, Baxter Family Pharmaceutical Scholarship Fund, Fulton County Cancer Fund, Fulton County Cancer Fund Endowment, Baxter/Pollock Family Engineering Scholarship Fund, and the Grace United Methodist Church Fund. Ernest and Alice Baxter moved to Rochester in 1941 and established Baxter Drugs, a wellknown drug store before becoming Webb’s Family Pharmacy in 1990. The couple were also members of Grace United Methodist Church. Ernie was a part of the Woodlawn Hospital Board as well as a group of downtown merchants who

The next generations of Baxter’s were Parke and Fran Baxter, who married in 1949. Both graduated from Rochester High School. Following in the footsteps of his parents, Parke ran the Baxter Drug Store. Parke and Fran were also members of the Grace United Methodist Church. They helped establish and support the Rochester Fellowship of Christian Athletes. The couple was induct-

ed into the RHS Athletic Hall of Fame for their support over the years both financially and attending events. Together, Parke and Fran were a huge part of the community. Parke was a member of the Kiwanis Club, Fulton County Parks board and sat of the Rochester school board when the high school was built. Fran was a Rochester schoolteacher for 35 years and coached middle school girls

basketball for several years. Later in life, Fran served as an advisor to the Fulton County Cancer’s Non-permanent Fund. Pollock, who accepted the award on behalf of her family, is the daughter of Parke and Fran. She and her husband Buddy continue the Baxter family tradition of being involved and giving back to the community. Fulton County Community Foundation would like to publicly recognize this long legacy of giving to inspire others to give back to their communities through both dollars and efforts. Fulton County Community Foundation and Fulton County in general have greatly benefited from the three generations of Baxter Families’ efforts to improve their community.
