over the last 20 years, just one of its regular, community-minded activities. According to Wisely, Rochester Garden Club has been active for over 50 years and has its roots in the “Welcome Wagon,” a group of “older women in Kewanna who greeted new residents with a basket of goodies.” In this tradition, club members brought plants and shrubs from their own gardens to give the new Habitat home a more lived-in feel, “so it looks less like it
popped out of the ground like a mushroom,” Wisley commented. Dot Showley oversaw the club’s Habitat for Humanity project this year, planting a variety of lilies, hostas and hardy shrubs such as golden jumper, a variety of spirea. Rochester Garden Club spans generations, with members aged 30 to 80 who meet once a month in members’ homes. “I learn something all the time,” said Wisely, who confessed
to knowing very little about gardening when she moved to the area in 1971. Along with simply sharing plants and gardening tips, the club has two primary goals: beautification and conservation. This summer members pulled weeds and planted flowers at businesses along Ninth Street to improve this “entrance to Rochester.” They also maintain flowers around the flagpole at Prairie Edge Nature Park on CR 150N. The love of baseball will never stop for Smith %\ 0$<$ 6721( )UHHODQFH :ULWHU Tony Smith grew up in Fulton County and from a very young age fell in love with the sport of softball. From the inspiration of his brother and father, Smith joined a team when he was 15 years old. “I must have inherited the passion of baseball as a gene
from them, it runs in our family.” Smith said. Throughout his childhood and into his young adult life he played baseball until making the decision to switch over to softball. “I never played in college but softball gave that same feeling of belonging,” he mentioned. For the past 26 years he has played softball regularly in the CCAC Warsaw League in Warsaw.

To Smith, the sport of softball is so much more than just a ball being thrown around a field or who wins the game. He fell in love with it because of the connections he made and the people he met. Softball became his family and as a single dad of two kids it’s important to have that structure in his life. When softball season comes around his kids are always so excited to go out and see everyone. Not only do his teammates make a lasting bond with him, but they bring his kids into the family and make them feel as though they too are a part of the team. “I’m a very family oriented man, so having the team treat everyone as one is an amazing experience.” When asked his favorite memory when playing softball, he said he has a hard time choosing, as there are so many great experiences he’s had not only on the field but off it as well. Off the field is when he gets to strengthen the bonds that later help them play better as a team on the field. But one memory does stick out to him. He was about to play in Owensboro, Ky., in the middle of a tobacco field in his early stages of baseball. That trip further drew him into the sport and forged his love into a passion. He went on that
721< 60,7+ trip when he played for a travel team, before joining the CCAC league. Smith has made so many memories over the years and while he did spend a great deal of time on the field he doesn’t regret a single moment and

dens in their front lawns. A recent winner was Amy Walton on Pontiac Street. “They caught me by surprise,” she recalled, when members knocked on her door to inform her, “We think your garden is beautiful.” Wisely noted she has seen obituaries mention the club’s garden awards, evidence of the pride those gardeners felt about their own efforts to “make Rochester more beautiful.” At each monthly meeting, club members recite the original Outdoor Life Conservation Pledge to “save and faithfully to defend from waste the natural resources of my country — its soil and minerals, its forests, waters and wildlife.” And they are always learning new ways to apply the pledge to gardening. “I try to encourage native plants that attract bees, butterflies and food for bird,” said Showley. Members also learn about alternatives to insecticides, herbicides and fertilizers. Wisely pointed out that although dish soap and vinegar may not be as effective, they are also not as harmful to bees and other wildlife. Showley emphasized that while there are master gardeners in the club, it is not a requirement. Far from it. And while members may discuss some serious subjects, they are no less interested in the dessert served at the end of every meeting. “Everybody is welcome.” Anyone interested in joining Rochester Garden Club may call Phyllis Wisely at (574) 223-5890.
Correction In the Aug. 3 issue, a photo with the caption “TENURE AWARD” incorrectly listed 2022 Fulton County Farm Bureau Tenure Award presenters Kevin Burton and Stephen Williams as award recipients. The recipients were, in fact, Ashley Haselby and Jesse Shriver. Shriver was not pictured. We sincerely regret the error.

Culver seeks input on 2040 Comprehensive Plan The Town of Culver has started the process to update its existing comprehensive plan by putting together the Destination 2040 Culver Comprehensive Plan. This plan will serve as a road map to guide how Culver should grow over the next five to 10 years. The premise of the plan is to empower and engage Culver residents to create a vision, address major barriers hindering growth and create solutions that offer better choices for where and how people will interact with the town and its community. This plan will not be successful or meaningful unless it reflects
the community’s aspirations for Culver’s future. Therefore, it is crucial to get as many community residents as possible engaged in this process. One of the ways residents and others can provide input is to fill out the Culver 2040 Survey at culver2040.com. “It’s important Culver updates our comprehensive plan because it creates a long-term vision for our community,” said Culver Town Manager Ginny Munroe. “We have also been able to use these plans to seek grant dollars to support the goals in the plan. State and federal grants are more readily available to communities that have a plan. Get-
ting input from the people who live here, have a business here, visit here or work here is important so that our leaders know what people who are invested in Culver envision for our community. We hope people will take the time to do the survey, fill out the postcards we have around town and at public events, and let us know what they want they want us to work on in the future”. To stay informed of plan updates and receive notifications for future events, follow the town on Facebook @Town of Culver. For additional information, contact Michiana Area Council of Governments at (574) 287-1829.

Three Valley school board members file for re-election %\ /($+ 6$1'(5 6WDII :ULWHU All three Tippecanoe Valley School Board incumbents whose seats are up for re-election this fall have filed to run again. According to the Kosciusko County Clerk’s Office, David Lash, Tom Bauters and Todd Hoffman who currently represent districts 3, 4 and 5 respectively, all filed on Wednesday, July 27, on the first day of the school board filing period ahead of the Nov. 8 general election. The last day to file is noon Friday, Aug. 26. Lash represents Franklin Township in Kosciusko County, and Bauters and Hoffman represent Henry and Newcastle townships respectively in Fulton County. As TVSC encompasses two counties and Kosciusko has the larger population of the two, all TVSC candidates must file for election in Kosciusko whether or not their districts are actually in that county. If Lash wins reelection, it will be his first full term in office. He replaced Lacey Wise in July 2020 to finish her term after she resigned to take a job as a guidance coun-
selor at Tippecanoe Valley High School. He currently serves as vice president on the board. Bauters would gain his second term if reelected. He is the current TVSC Board president. Hoffman
is trying for his third term on the board. As of closing time at the clerk’s office on Wednesday, no challengers had filed to run against the three.

Let’s study the Bible The Great Commission (Read: Matthew 28:16-20) Jesus said: “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them … and teaching %\ 5(9 521 them.” (Mat385.(< thew 28:1820) Matthew 28:18-20 is usually called “The Great Commission,” though this statement is no greater than that in any of the other Gos-
pels, nor is it the last statement Jesus made before he returned to heaven. However, this declaration does apply to us as believers, so we should understand the factors that are involved. First, “all power” — authority (Matthew 28:18). This was no more the humble peasant of Galilee, but the mighty son of God. In his death and resurrection, he had conquered Satan, sin and death. God had given all authority into his hands. In Matthew 4:8-10, Satan had taken Christ to a mountain and offered him all the kingdoms of the world. Here on this Galilee mount, Christ proclaimed that he now had all authority and that Satan had been defeated. Second, “all nations” (Matthew 28:19). “Teach” is actually
“make disciples.” This is a commission to take the Gospel to all nations, and is a definite change from where the commission was limited to the Jews only. Evangelism alone is not the commission; after people are won, they should be baptized, which suggests a local church fellowship. They should also be taught, which suggests the teaching and preaching of the Bible. Please keep in mind that our commission is not simply “to win souls.” It is to “make disciples” — which includes winning them, bringing them into a Christian fellowship and building them up in the faith. While we thank God for every Christian ministry that

manuel”— “God with us” — and here he reaffirms that name. He is with us through his Holy Spirit, in his word, by his providential care and with his divine presence. This is the promise that encouraged and enabled messengers of Christ down through the years. Matthew ends his Gospel with a responsibility on the part of Christian believers to take the Gospel of Christ to all people. Not all will be saved, but all deserve a chance to hear the Gospel. is true to the Lord and his word, whatever is done should be tied to the local church. Third, “all things” (Mathew 28:20). A disciple is a learner, and he is to be taught “all things whatsoever I have commanded you.” This includes the whole word of God. People are to live by every word of God (Matthew 4:4). All scripture is profitable (2 Timothy 3:16). The church that fails to teach people the whole counsel of God (Acts 20:27) is not obeying the Great Commission. Fourth, “always” (Matthew 28:20). What a tremendous assurance. “I am with you always.” In Matthew 1:23, he was called “Im-

Argos students will receive fierce welcome back to school Welcoming Argos Community Schools students to the 2022-2023 school year is a newly constructed dragon at the entrance of the junior and senior high school. A dragon has been the school mascot since 1934; however, this is the first year the mascot has taken on a three-dimensional larger-than-life sculpture. “Our goal was to add a large statement piece that all students can embrace and one that will rejuvenate the excitement a school mascot brings, unity, a sense of belonging and a common goal,” stated Ned Speicher, superintendent of Argos Community Schools. The dragon is 600 pounds, 7 feet tall and made from molded fiberglass. The dragon is perched on a 2,000-pound stone base with large wings and a tail. “The wings on this dragon are really something to see,” said Speicher. “The wings are a visual reminder that one of the main traits of a dragon is their ability to soar high. It is a characteristic we see in our students and fitting for our nickname, ‘The Argos Dragons.’” Speicher added, “We are excited for our students to return to school and see the new dragon. We are encouraging all our students to have annual pictures taken to see how much they have changed and grown throughout the years.” New this year, students will also experience a new playground and three new outdoor classrooms. New lockers will also be an addition to the hallways. To accommodate the growth Argos has experienced over the years, a new
cafeteria is being constructed. The school is hopeful the expansion will be completed soon. Argos Community Schools has always followed the tradition of providing quality instruction to all students so they can achieve success in learning. As a onecampus K-12 school corporation, the goal is to maintain excellence to ensure the success of every child.

Business Profile —
Gatewood Woodworking makes one-of-a-kind pieces %\ $/,621 +$1'< 6WDII :ULWHU Jim Gatewood, along with his family and neighbor, Tony Boyd, work together to create handmade woodworking items to sell, but they may say it’s just to keep them busy. Just one year ago, Gatewood was looking online for hobbies to keep his time occupied, but nothing seemed to quite fit his idea of fun until he came across woodworking. He always had an interest in woodworking and had admiration for the craft, so he decided he would give it a try. He talked with Boyd, who also had an interest in woodwork, and soon the hobby turned into something more. From there, Gatewood Woodworking was created. With the help of Gatewood’s wife, Kathy; son, Jimmy Gatewood; and daughter, Holly Borges; Boyd and Gatewood established a small family business. “It all started with a dough bowl,” shared Gatewood. “It just evolved.” Today they have different machines and tools set up in Gatewood’s garage to create one-of-a-kind pieces. Customers can order personalized items such as cutting boards, signs, flags and flower pots. They are hoping to begin small furniture pieces as well. These examples only reinforce the demand for custom gifts, which is what drives their work. “Now is a good time to get Christmas orders in,” Gatewood said, adding that custom orders can take an average of two to three weeks to complete, depending on the order. A lot of their wood is from local sawmills within minutes from the Gatewood Woodwork-

They use different types of wood to incorporate natural colors in their pieces. Such examples are reds, purples, walnut and oak. “It takes a lot of time, but we are good at it,” stated Gatewood. “We take pride in what we do.” They don’t use a varnish on their wood due to many of their pieces having food contact. Gatewood explained they use mineral oil on their pieces and it enhances the natural wood colors. At Gatewood Woodworking, each person brings a different strength to the business. Gatewood himself does a lot of the woodworking, but he won’t shy away from expressing his appreciation for his wife and son. from Mishawaka. It started with easements being attained, materials (pipe, valves and such) purchased and scheduled to be completed in roughly six weeks. This project is funded with ARPA federal grant monies. Project No. 4 on the board is construction of covers for the two large clarifiers at the waste treatment plant that will prevent our large outside collection systems from freezing in winter. If you remember, covers will replace the “pole building” that rotted because of the humid environment and fell down. We were fully insured when this happened and the correct installation of the lids will be paid for with the insurance money. We are waiting on lids to be delivered and have been assured they will be here and installed before winter. No. 5 on the project list is the Main Street Community Crossing grant (we received $1 million dollars, the same grant we used to do the Fourth Street upgrade). The first Tuesday of August we have bid openings and a contractor will be chosen. I will be able to announce who the successful bidder is in a future writing. The No. 6 project is just about ready to come off the list. This is the Minnow Creek “revamp” project the city and county collaborated on to install several 6½-foot-diameter pipes and
