do?’” she said. After graduation she taught PE in Greencastle for three years. When they told her they may not have enough funding to continue the program, she started job hunting. She interviewed at Rochester, was offered a position and accepted. Shortly after moving here, she ran into Tom Schwenk, whom she had met at Purdue and worked on a class project with, but then lost track of him. “It had been at least four years since we’d seen each other,” she said. They celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary this year. Schwenk has primarily taught elementary aged children during her PE career. “The elementary

kids still love PE,” she said. During the month of June, she taught summer school PE to high school students. “During summer PE I try to utilize lifetime activities the kids will use later. Too many kids, once they have the two credits for PE, will never wear tennis shoes again. This year the curriculum included going to the driving range, archery at Ringers, swimming, frisbee golf, tennis and bowling — hopefully all things they may do as adults and take their kids to do when they become parents themselves,” she said. For the 2021-22 school year she will be balancing her time between the middle school and Riddle Elementary. At the middle school she will teach swimming, fifth and seventh grade PE, and will then spend the second half of her day teaching second, third, and fourth grade PE. “I enjoy the interactions I get to have with the kids,” said Schwenk. At Riddle, she is grateful for the extracurricular activities she is able to offer students. Schwenk leads the kids in jump rope club, a fall walking club and a fall and spring running club. She is also the local lead on a national program called Girls on the Run. “It’s so important to plant that seed and tell them they can do it. You don’t have to be the fastest, you just have to move. Some of those kids are still running, in high school and in college, and it’s wonderful to see that,” she said. “I love seeing them excel. They want to be there, they want to do it and they want to get better.” Schwenk recently headed a project at Riddle Elementary to get a handicap swing installed.

We have handicapped kids. We have to help them enjoy their outdoor time as much as the other kids. I’ve had an awful lot of good times here and I’m so proud that are community would help make the swing a reality,” she said of the project. “You know you’re doing the right thing when you still enjoy it after you’ve done it a long time. As long as it’s still fun, I’ll continue to teach. I like the outcome; I like to be with the kids. It’s what I’ve always wanted to do. I can’t do back flips and I can’t ride my unicycle as well, but I try my best,” Schwenk concluded with a smile. The Schwenks enjoy spending time with their son Brock and his wife Tasha; and their daughter Abby and her husband Brad; and their three grandchildren: Tommy, Brandt and Brady.

Apples Good neighbors: I have two apple trees and will give away the apples. You have to pick the apples. They would make good cider. They are free. Call (574) 377-4817 and leave a message.

Pennyroyal tea Good neighbors: If the person who asked about Pennyroyal tea is still interested, please call (574) 773-7160.

It has three intercoms, each of which can be plugged into an outlet to connect different parts of the house or even the outbuildings. Ours is nearly worn out and I cannot find a new one. Eccentric was another adjective that was used to describe him by his friend, Margo Layman. They were rural Rochester neighbors up until his death May 25 at the age of 77, and had been so for the past 19 years. Along with her friend Jeri Good, Layman said they were some of the select few people who had a chance to get to know Dankert on a more personal level prior to his death. Since then, as they have gone through his belongings to help finalize his estate, they have learned even more through his photos, writings and other items they have uncovered detailing his life story. Dankert was born in Kendallville but was raised in LaPorte County. For many years, Dankert worked in food services for Plymouth schools. Layman said the job served not as a passion, but rather as a vehicle for him to help fund his many hobbies. Throughout his life, Dankert was the lead guitarist in numerous bands. He kept detailed records of each band’s name and for how long he was a part of it. He also kept track of the various guitars he had owned throughout his lifetime, which was an extensive list. Another of Dankert’s passions was flying. He received his first pilot’s license in 1962, at the age of 18. He owned numerous planes, as was documented in the photo albums discovered by Layman and Good. His last plane remained disassembled in his garage, with only the propeller missing from the jumble of parts. Flying, Layman said, was his true passion. “He was an eccentric man with many hobbies,” she added. “He was a private guy and a Jehovah’s Witness. We’re here to respect and love people for who they are, and that’s what we did with Jim.” Another of Dankert’s passions was a very tangible one he physically left behind in a crowded room in his house. A very detailed, very intricate model train system was left in place — one he apparently worked on up until his death. The display included amazingly specific and accurate recreations of various train depots from around the country, which Dankert had either visited or was very familiar with. Each building appeared to be carefully handcrafted rather than a prefabricated kit purchased from a hobby store. It was quite obvious Dankert had spent thousands of hours and thousands of dollars on his hobby of miniatures. The details, down to the centimeters of

While the decision to demolish Dankert’s house was a relatively easy one to make for Layman — it was left to her in Dankert’s will, along with all of his possessions — it was just as easy to decide to find a way to preserve the trains and all that came with them. Layman said she donated some of the pieces to the Fulton County Model Railroad 4-H Club to help further their efforts. Most of Dankert’s trains and some of the landscaping were given to the Fort Wayne Railroad Museum, located in New Haven, which came to Rochester July 24 to carefully dismantle and relocate selected pieces of the set to a new home in Allen County. The museum agreed to display the sign that was affixed to the outside of Dankert’s house, which simply read, “Jim’s House.” What wasn’t taken by the museum was given to the Fulton County Animal Center Rummage Sale. Dankert’s siblings approved of Layman as the recipient of his estate and have given her carte

Craig announces candidacy for sheriff Matt Craig, a lifelong Republican born and raised in Fulton County, has announced his candidacy for Fulton County Sheriff. “Currently I am a senior deputy with the Fulton County Sheriff’s Department where I began my law enforcement career in 2008. Along with being a general instructor as well as a driving instructor, I am also a Taser instructor and responsible for reviewing the department’s crash reports before they are sent to the state,” stated Craig. “I am running for sheriff because I feel the citizens of Fulton

County deserve a sheriff that is transparent, approachable and fiscally responsible. My beliefs are that it is important to be fair, not only to my fellow co-workers but also to all citizens, and in order to be successful, all law enforcement and emergency/disaster response department heads should work together regardless of their personal differences.” After graduating from Tippecanoe Valley High School in 1997, he worked for the family business, Craig Welding, until joining the sheriff’s department in 2008. “My

wife Julie and I have six amazing children between us. Ava 18, Logan 17, Kendall 15, Makynna 14, Bailey 12, George 10. “If elected as your sheriff my goals are to ensure a safer community by implementing balanced around the clock coverage along with improving communications within the local law enforcement and emergency/disaster response agencies. Most importantly, planning ahead to protect and serve future generations and opening up a platform in order to allow people’s voices to be heard.”

Let’s study the Bible The Faith Of Abraham Read Romans 4:1-25 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. (Romans 4:3) “What is justification by faith? Simply put, to justify is to declare

righteous. Justification is an act of God whereby He pronounces a sinner to be righteous because of that sinner’s faith in Christ. According to one theologian, the root idea in justification is the declaration of God, the righteous judge, that the man who believes in Christ, sinful though he may be, is righteous — is viewed as being righteous, because in Christ he has come into a righteous relationship with God”

(Ladd, G. E., A Theology of the New Testament, Eerdmans, 1974, p. 437). The Jewish Christians in Rome would immediately %\ 5(9 have asked 521 385.(< the Apostle Paul, “How does this doctrine of justification by faith relate to our history? Paul, you say that this doctrine is witnessed to by the Law and the Prophets. Well, what about Abraham?” First, Abraham Believed God (Romans 4:1–4; Romans 4:9–12). Not by good works, but by faith (Genesis 15:6). Salvation is not like wages that you earn or works that you can boast about. Abraham was not saved by keeping the law because

the law had not been given yet, nor was he saved by obeying a religious ritual. It was all by God’s grace. Second, David believed God (Romans 4:5–8). David wrote Psalm 32 after his great sin with Bathsheba (2 Samuel 11). Can God forgive a man who commits adultery, deceit, and murder? Yes. When David repented and turned to God, he was forgiven by God, even though the Lord allowed David to feel the bitter consequences of his sins (2 Samuel 12). God justifies the ungodly, not the righteous (Romans 4:5; Matthew 9:9–13). Third, you and I can believe God (Romans 4:13–25). Simply by believing God’s promise as Abraham and David did. Faith and promise go together just as law and works go together. Abraham is the father of the Jewish nation physically, but he is the “father” of all believers spiritually (Romans 4:16; Matthew

3:7–9). At Calvary, our sins were put on Jesus Christ’s account; when you trust Christ, God puts Christ’s righteousness on your account (2 Corinthians 5:21). What can be more blessed than to know your sins are forgiven? The central theme of Romans is humanity cannot save itself and God justifies the sinner by grace through faith in Christ alone (Romans 1:16–17). The Apostle Paul reveals all people — Jews and Gentiles — are sinners. All have sinned. All stand condemned before our holy God (Romans 3:23). People are redeemed, not by obeying the law, but by God’s actions of justifying a sinner through faith in Jesus Christ (Romans 3:22–26). We are justified (declared righteous and made right with God) by grace alone (sola gratia), through faith alone (sola fide) and in Christ alone (solus Christus).

Tree inventory project will soon get underway in Rochester %\ '(% 3$77(5621 6WDII :ULWHU Residents of Rochester will soon be seeing a number of individuals in orange vests looking at trees. This group will be taking an inventory of the trees in the right of ways as part of the town’s Tree City USA program. The inventory is expected to begin late August, early September and will take about six weeks. The City of Rochester has been honored by the Tree City USA program for 21 years and desires to continue with that honor again in the fall. To further the protection and management of trees in Rochester, the town’s tree board is engaged in two projects. One project is Tree City USA, a program of Arbor Day Foundation that recognizes communities for improving their green spaces

and celebrating trees. This project calls for a tree board, a tree care ordinance and budget at least $2 per capita on community forestry and host an Arbor Day observation. The other is a tree inventory project. Through a matching Community and Urban Forestry Grant from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, division of forestry and U.S. Forest Service Eastern Area, workers from Great Lakes Urban Forestry Management will be conducting a tree inventory throughout Rochester. The forestry management team will be looking at all trees in the city’s right of way — the areas between the sidewalk and street. This inventory will count the street trees in town and measure the condition, size and species of trees. The inventory will also be placed into a mapping GIS data-

base. Eric Biddinger, a member of the Rochester Tree Board, noted the inventory will help the board identify where more trees are needed, the types of trees to plant and where to keep an eye on existing trees as they age. This will also help justification for tree projects. Identification of the trees is important. Biddinger shared where Lafayette lost all its ash trees with the emerald ash borer. The Asian beetle could cause a great loss if all the trees were maple. “We want to reduce the impact (of tree loss) and diversify our trees,” Biddinger stated. The tree board, comprised of five individuals, are charged with planting, protecting and caring for the street trees in the city. The board meets once a month to review removal requests, planting projects and other activities. The board works in cooperation with

the parks and street departments, mayors office and public utilities. There are a number of advantages of trees in the city. Trees in the right of way provide a barrier between pedestrians and vehicles; reduce traffic speeds; absorb rainfall diverting water from stormwater systems and reduce flooding; absorb greenhouse gases, carbon monoxide and other pollutants; encourages outdoor activities; are the anchor of urban wildlife providing homes and food for insects, birds and animals; and can increase home and business values. Studies have also shown just looking at a tree can reduce blood pressure and improve emotional and psychological health. The board and city officials will be meeting with the Great Lakes Urban Forestry management team at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, in city hall.

Because of the major time commitment involved in taking the class, all applicants must have approval of their employer prior to filing an application. There is no deadline to this application. It is on a first come basis. Once the class size has reached 18 then it will be full. In order to receive a certificate of graduation, each participant is expected to attend and partici-

pate in class meetings, attend the tours and the September Geneva Center orientation. All absences must receive prior approval. No more than two absences are allowed to be eligible to graduate. If accepted into the Leadership Academy Program, the applicant, the employer, or sponsoring organization will be billed for the tuition fee of $400, which covers most costs. A few scholarships are available for those with financial need. Any questions contact the chamber office at (574) 224-2666, email chamber assist@rtcol.com.
