However, as the withdrawal of COVID-19 funding coincides with the pandemic’s persistent economic fallout, Board President David Smook hopes the community might come to the aid of an organization he said has often “fallen under the radar.” “We’re getting a lot of new people now,” said Smook. These include people with disabilities, the elderly and others on fixed incomes now facing rising costs of housing, utilities, gas and food. And although un-

employment is low, there are many between jobs having difficulty paying bills. Back in 1973, 22 Fulton County churches of “all different denominations” joined together under the “United Ministries” aegis for a variety of reasons. Most importantly, Smook noted, “the need was there.” Church leaders also realized people would go from church to church, and communication was necessary to use resources more efficiently while also expanding services. United Ministries allowed churches to centralize information, vet applicants and “combine resources to help more people more different ways,” said Smook. A board was created consisting of the pastor and a lay
person from each church who decide the best way to allocate funds. Those funds primarily come from the churches. According to Smook, since 1973, there has been virtually no public fundraising and no government grants (the latter largely stemming from the constitutional separation of church and state). There are also no paid employees. “A lot of volunteers do a lot of hard work,” observed Smook. “It has very much been a community effort.” The three primary services offered are a food pantry located in the Community Resource Center, 625 Pontiac St., Rochester; Outreach, offering assistance with utilities, housing and other emergency situations; and the annual
Christmas basket ministry. The Cross Church at Third and Main Streets in Rochester provides and processes applications for assistance. United Ministries’ pantry alone is assisting roughly 1,200 people per month from around Fulton County, minus Akron, which has a similar organization, United We Stand Ministries. “It’s just by word of mouth,” noted Don Abbott, United Ministries pantry manager, at the end of a day serving seven families, 34 people total. “We run the gamut of a lot of different folks.” Recently the numbers have been “shooting up,” he said, including many he has not seen for a year or more. “Inflation isn’t helping.” Smook added the average age of volunteers is “getting older,” and the organization is always in need of “new blood” to help do the work. Cholger’s proud of his Ancient Ninjas %\ 0$<$ 6721( )UHHODQFH :ULWHU When David Cholger’s son began taking Taekwondo classes, Cholger went with him. He found a passion in the art and 32 years later he is still devoting his time to teaching it. Cholger is the instructor for many different classes of all different ages. He teaches 6-12 year olds twice a week and 13 and up another two days a week. But the class he has become most proud of would be his Ancient Ninjas. The Ancient Ninjas are a group of 10 individuals from the ages of 65 to 83. They practice twice a week for one hour and compete in competitions and tournaments. When Cholger started this sport, he went into it wanting to keep the traditions alive. Taekwondo not only helps with balance and stability to keep joints limber, but it also helps your mind and memory. Several members in the group have said, “It’s something fun to do that we enjoy, but is also a
great exercise.” In this group, they study patterns up to 38 movements and have two students who have been working towards getting their black belt. Linda Scott and her husband Jim have been working with Cholger for five years now. They started taking classes at Wynnfield Crossing until COVID hit, and then began working with Cholger at Blue Dragon Taekwondo. They recently tested for their black belts. When Linda and Jim first mentioned wanting to get their black belts, Cholger was excited and proud. He had to check with the instructors and once he received permission, they began training. This is something very few people their age know they’re capable of, and he was very proud of them to have worked so hard to get to this moment. Cholger specified many times this is a sport for all people no matter what age you are. It’s something that takes dedication and time, but is worth it. It works on your mind and body simultane-

Let’s study the Bible Christ’s second coming
the “Faithful and True” (Revelation 19:11) rides forth to judge and make war (Psalm 45). This description of Jesus Christ is thrilling. He is no longer on a humble donkey, but on a fiery white charger. His eyes are not filled with tears as when he beheld Jerusalem; nor is he wearing a mocking crown of thorns. Instead of being stripped by his enemies, he wears a garment dipped in blood, signifying judgment and victory. When on earth, he was abandoned by his followers; but here the armies of heaven will follow him in conquest. His mouth does not speak “words of grace” (Luke 4:22), but rather the word of victory and justice (see Isaiah 11:4). Jesus Christ comes to rule with a rod of iron (Psalm 2). He comes not to bear the wrath of God on the cross, but to tread the winepress of God’s wrath at the Battle of Armageddon. He is king of kings and lord of lords. Who are the armies gathered together against Christ? These are the armies of the 10-kingdom federation of Europe, as well as the forces of the kings of the east, Egypt and Russia. They gather on the Plain of Esdraelon in Palestine. The name “Armageddon” means “Mount of Megiddo.” An angel announces that the armies of earth will lose the batContinued on page 3

And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, King of Kings, and Lord of Lords” (Revelation 19:11 & 16) The armies of Jesus Christ will come from heaven (Revelation 19:1116). In Revelation 4:1, heaven opens to let the church in; but here, heaven opens to let Christ and his armies ride forth in victory. At his trial, Jesus Christ said that God the Father could send legions of angels to deliver him; and here the Lord rides forth with the armies of glory: the OT saints, the church, and the angels (Matthew 25:31; 1 Thessalonians 3:13). In Revelation 6:1, the Antichrist had ridden on a white horse, imitating Jesus Christ, but here

Let’s study Continued from page 2 tle. In fact, there will not be much of a battle, for Jesus Christ will destroy his enemies instantly (2 Thessalonians 1). Christ destroys the armies with the word, the sword that comes from his mouth (Hebrews 4:12). Men would not bow to his word and receive the Gospel; now they must be slain by that same word. Kevelyn Joanne Urschel
Industrial Plant Manager
A Native Of Hammond
Sam Muffley, 73, Plymouth, was surrounded by his loving family when he passed away at 10 a.m. Sunday, July 10, 2022, at his residence. On April 20, 1949, Samuel Nye was born in Bremen to Roy and Ivadelle Pletcher Muffley. Proudly, he graduated from Bremen High 6$0 08))/(< School with the class of 1967. Sam and Diane L. Cunningham were married on May 22, 1981, in Rochester. They shared 41 years of life’s adventures. Sam was an industrial plant manager for heating and air conditioning. He retired from Bards Manufacturing of Georgia. As an armchair quarterback, Sam loved to watch Notre Dame and the Chicago Bears. He was also a loyal fan of the White Sox. Taking pride in his cars, Sam kept them immaculate and ready to roll. His lawn was always manicured and looked pristine. In the spring, he enjoyed mushroom hunting at his secret locales. Grandpa cherished the time with his grandchildren. Dad coached his daughter’s softball championship team for several years. Great memories were made for both generations. The Muffleys often visited the casinos; their favorites were in Las Vegas; Tupelo, Miss.; South Bend; and New Buffalo. Left to cherish the memories of Sam are his wife, Diane; son, Steven Mahoney and wife Traci of Rochester; daughter, Summer Molitierno and husband Thomas of Plymouth; seven grandchildren, Mackenzie DuBois and husband Jon, Austin Mahoney, Macy Green, Roger Leon Karr, Grady Mahoney, Madison Travis and Tyler Travis; great-granddaughter, Swayze Elizabeth Mahoney; sisters-in-law, Nancy Bailey and husband Charlie, Kathy Cunningham and Sandy Muffley; special aunt, Louise Glingle; canine companion, Lucy, the black and white Australian shepherd and sheltie blend. Preceding Sam in death are his parents; sister, Sandra Allen; and brother, Steve Muffley. A celebration of the life of Samuel Nye Muffley will be at noon Friday, July 15, at Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester. Friends may visit with the family from 10 a.m. to noon Friday at the funeral home. Sam’s family asks that you dress comfortably and wear your favorite Notre Dame attire. Memorials may be made to the Marshall County Humane Society, 11165 13th Road, Plymouth, IN 46563, or the Fulton County Animal and Adoption, 1540 Wentzel St., Rochester, IN 46975. Kevelyn Joanne Urschel, 72, Rochester, was called to heaven on Thursday, July 7, 2022. She was born Oct. 4, 1949, in Hammond, to Wendel and Paula Shrum. “Kev” to all who knew her, was a sweet, kind and giving woman who touched the lives of many. Kev was a 1967 graduate of Crown .(9(/<1 - Point High School. She was a Pioneer Girls 856&+(/ camp counselor and in the CP Twirlers, Band Cadettes and Booster Club. Kev loved to sew. Two of her uniquely designed dresses made it into the Home Economics Fashion Show. Kev married her high school sweetheart, Cary Stump, on Dec. 9, 1967, in Crown Point, and had three children: Darek Stump of Rochester, Kaci Stump-Liner of Fishers (grandkids, Griffin, Ella, Grissom), and Jason Stump of Indianapolis (grandkids, Kaylea, Aidan, Caleb). She was totally dedicated to her children in all aspects of their lives. Kev worked at Hart Schaffner Marx and The News Stand while raising her children. Kev married Ken Urschel on Nov. 13, 1999, in Niagara Falls, N.Y. She gained a stepdaughter, Karen Urschel-Carroll (grandkids, Garrett, Brayden). “Ken and Kev” as they were known, enjoyed traveling and eating out. Despite being quiet and shy, Kev loved managing the karaoke portion of Ken’s music business. Other side jobs that kept Kev busy were sewing Vera Bradley items at Superior Sample, helping with the polls during voting and handing out food samples at Kroger. Kev loved people and animals. She enjoyed playing bunco and euchre with her girlfriends. She had fun being in the Red Hat Society-The Royal Anti-Ques. As a passionate animal lover, Kev would always take in strays and nurture them back to health. She would always stop alongside the road if she saw any animal needing help. Her love for all animals generated a house full of dogs and cats over the years. Every day she would sit and watch all the deer, birds and squirrels in her backyard. Kev was preceded in death by her father, Wendel Shrum. She is survived by her mom, Paula Shrum, Crown Point; and her four sisters, Carol, Sheila, Barb and Wendy. A celebration of Kev’s life will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to your local animal shelter. Or you can donate to have a memorial tree planted in memory of Kev by visiting the Zimmerman Bros Funeral Home website, as well as expressing your condolences at zimmermanbrosfh.com. Arrangements by Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, Rochester.

New bait and tackle shop sure to lure locals in %\ $/,621 +$1'< 6WDII :ULWHU Mike Dennis and Mike Trigg are hoping to catch the attention of local fishermen. The duo recently opened Schmack Em’ Bait and Tackle Shop Friday, June 24, at 3516 E. 600S, Macy; just east of Nyona Lake. After a conversation about the bait that Dennis makes, Trigg’s wife, Jenifer Trigg, suggested turning their old garage on a vacant land down the road from their home into a bait and tackle shop. “It wasn’t much twisting of our arms,” joked Trigg. Dennis makes all Schmack Em’ bait himself. He started making his own bait to help pay for his own habit; which quickly evolved into selling his homemade bait on the back of his golf cart to the local fishers around the lake. “I was about to get a trailer and park it at the lake or go to other areas to give more people access when Trigg and Jen mentioned opening a bait shop,” shared Dennis. “The lake needed it anyway,” expressed Trigg. “Nyona and South Mud Lake don’t have anything like this in the community.” “We are fisherman, we know what people want, we are able to find things they need and if we don’t have it, we will order it for them,” said Dennis. “We still have new inventory coming in daily.” They currently stock big red worms, night crawlers, crickets, minnows, bee moths, cast cray

and some other tackle along with convent items for the community. Some items include household items, first aid, candy, snacks, milk, eggs, condiments and even their own merchandise. What sets them apart is the Schmack Em’ bait, not found anywhere else. Dennis has been making his own bait for over a year now and as a fisherman himself; some may refer to him as the “bass whisperer,” he knows what everyone is using. The plastic holds up well as Trigg claims he can catch 20 fish with only one of the Schmack Em’ bait. The men are passionate about their community. The shop offers free coffee everyday to patrons, support local youth sports teams and also plans to hold fishing tournaments for those interest-
ed. They encourage storytelling and sharing tips amongst their guests; to provide knowledge and experience. Trigg grew up in the area and has fond memories of visiting the small local bait shop as a young boy. “Our cricket box is the same exact one from the old bait shop, the same one my grandpa stood next to when he took me to the shop,” Trigg shared. He hopes that one day the stories and memories made at Schmack Em’ will be passed down to the next generation. Their hopes are that Schmack Em’ Bait and Tackle Shop becomes a family oriented hub, where people can come and talk. For information about Schmack Em’, call (574) 382-0350 or visit from 7 a.m to 8 p.m Sunday-Saturday.

Church to offer their condolences and support. Now, 18 years later, the memory of Kelsey lives on, even through people who never met her, including some who weren’t yet born when she died. Each Thanksgiving morning since 2004 faithful supporters show up for the “I’m Thankful Four,” a four-mile road run to benefit the Kelsey Mikel Memorial Foundation, which provides two scholarships to NorthWood High School seniors. The first is a $1,500 one-time scholarship to a senior member of the school’s yearbook staff and the second, the “Dreams Come True” award, given to a senior “with passion, vision and dreams, who has plans to impact the world in positive ways.” The scholarship provides ( 4V[OL $1,000 annually for four years to a senior NorthWood Y /L -VY ;OL )V`U student who applies and is then selected by the nineZ ElkAfter person board, which includes Mikel. year’s o Edithis :LL 7HNL tion Reachin awards are given, Mikel said theVol. foundation have ch g Elk 35, No.will hart, Kos 3 provided more than $105,000 in aid to students. ciusko, Nob The annual run and walk, which began only seven le And LaG months after Kelsey’s death thanks to the organization www.seniorli range Counties of family friends, has grown into a popular Thanksgivfenewspaper s.com ing morning event that attracts hundreds of runners, walkers and supporters each year. The Mikels have been active in many other organizations to help preserve their memories of Kelsey. They have been active in the Indiana Donor Network, which helps facilitate organ, tissue and eye donation and transplants across the country. They are also active with the organization’s annual “Gift of Life Celebration,” at which Mikel has played an integral role as its emcee for several years. “August 21 is a day that I’ve always allowed myself to be in a bad mood,” Mikel said, referring to the anniversary of his daughter’s death. “Last year on August 21, my daughter, Mattie, gave birth to our first grandchild. It has allowed me to redefine that day.” Mikel said one of his wife’s biggest fears was people wouldn’t remember Kelsey. Through their efforts and the support of their community, it is assured that her memory will continue to live on. Post holiday thoughts from the mayor’s desk Last Monday we all experienced the Fourth of July celebrating the 246th birthday of the United States of America. With every- %\ 7(' '(1721 0D\RU RI thing going 5RFKHVWHU on in our country it has given me pause for thought. If you have lived long enough to
see more than a couple of presidents in office and/or are a student of history, you will know that over the 246 years of America’s existence we have had all types of leadership, some evaluated as strong and others not so strong. We have had periods of war and periods of peace. We have had economic growth and periods of recession and even depression. What has never changed through any of these times is the strength, faith and core values of a majority of Americans that sustains this Republic we call America through all times.
I was approached just last week by a lady who was telling me how depressed she was with everything wrong about our country and that she had never been very lucky in her life. She had never won anything: Not the lottery, not any contests (she played a lot of contests), not gambling, just nothing. I listened but then I told her that she had won the biggest lottery you could ever win in life. She exclaimed, “When was that?” I said, “The day you were born in the United States of America and not in some Third World
foreign country. To be born in a country known as the greatest in the world with freedoms such as speech, religion and choice is a huge life win. She told me she had never thought of that and would never say again she had never won anything. In the same venue I was speaking with a young lady veteran, a marine who had spent a tour in Afghanistan. She told me her life experience in the corps reinforced her beliefs in freedom and the American way and the importance of working daily to preserve that freedom.
She also told me the Marines have a standard of “Never leaving a colleague behind on the battlefield.” She said this same attitude must be taken with Americans who are not understanding that we live in the greatest country in the world. Those of us who “get it” should and will not leave these colleagues behind. What a great attitude. Semper Fidelis. This holiday time and at all times please keep these two ladies in your thoughts and never hesitate to claim that you have won the largest lottery in life. God bless America.
