In 1975, Sergeant Fritz Beckman, known by his middle name, “Rob,” flew back to the United States from Germany, where his duties included serving in the American border garrisons at Bad Hersfield and Bad Kissingen, within sight of the Soviet zone, the first line of defense in Europe during the Cold War. It was two years after the end of direct U.S. military involvement in Vietnam. The days of returning servicemen being greeted with insults and abuse from anti-war protestors was still fresh in the minds of many, and at the airport, officials suggested to Beckman he change out of his uniform before disembarking. Later, in 1978, he quietly returned to civilian life with his new wife Linda. Forty-four years later, Linda arranged for Rob, now Rochester American Legion Post 36 commander, and his older brother John, to receive the hero’s welcome they deserved, by booking them on an Honor Flight to visit the Washington D.C. memorials June 3-4. “She did it all for us,” said Rob of Linda’s work organizing the required paperwork. Honor Flights is a national nonprofit organization started in 2005 with the goal of transporting military veterans at no cost to the see the memorials of the wars in which they fought. Roughly 245,000 veterans have taken part in this unique experience. Due to the seniority system, John, who served from 1964-67 had been eligible for a while. “He turned down two flights to go with me,” Rob explained. Then COVID-19 hit, and flights were grounded until April 2022. The brothers were finally able to join 84

Indy-raised Boards enjoys the ‘small town feel’ %\ '$9,' +$=/(',1( 6WDII :ULWHU As a skills trainer for Four County Counseling Centers, one of Michael Boards’ goals is to help people “become the best version of themselves they can be.” And although Boards was born and raised in Indianapolis, it seems the 29-year-old has discovered the best version of himself in the small town of Rochester, where he lives with his wife, Makayla. After graduating from Warren Central High School, where he was on the baseball team and third
chair violinist in the orchestra, Boards went on to earn a degree in psychology from Manchester University. And it was in North Manchester he was first exposed to the “small town feel.” “It was a nice break from the hustle and bustle of the city,” he recalled. Moreover, he soon found it easier to enjoy an active, outdoor lifestyle, be it fishing, disc golf or gardening. Nevertheless, it was while growing up in Indianapolis Boards learned the values that have served him well in his professional life. For one, he developed into a

sociable person, concerned with the well-being of those around him. His interest in psychology, he explained, came in part from “a desire to help people.” “I’m a very sociable person … I try to see the good in people.” Boards also credits his athletic background for helping develop empathy for the people around him. “I played baseball all throughout my life.” And on a team, where everyone is dependent on each other, he noted, “We tried building each other up instead of tearing each other down.” Often, he added, “People feel like they’re never listened to. I try to listen to the things they want to talk about.” Music provided yet another example of the benefits of team work. Boards’ interest in the violin began in fifth grade and he was able to develop on the instrument without private training. He is self-taught on the piano as well, and he has found music to be another way to connect with people. He has also started “dabbling on my own,” creating original music using GarageBand recording software and posting it on his Youtube channel. Youtube also provides an outlet for Boards’ other interests, including video games and disc golf, activities he shares on his channel. Boards and a group of 12-15 regular disc golfers have also started a disc golf league. He particularly enjoys Honey Bear Hollow Family Camp Ground’s course, one of the oldest in Indiana, as well as courses in Akron and in

Valley graduates 143 in class of 2022 %\ /($+ 6$1'(56 6WDII :ULWHU The Tippecanoe Valley High School Class of 2022 has received its turn in the spotlight. The class, made up of 143 graduates, had its commencement ceremony on Sunday, June 5, in the TVHS gym. In his speech at the ceremony, TVHS Principal Brandon Kresca noted he picks a character quality that encompasses each graduating class. For the Class of 2022, it was “endearing.” “The definition of endearing is inspiring love and affection,” he said. “In talking with your teachers they have all mentioned that they will most miss your love for yourselves, for each other, for your school and for life itself. The best part of all of you are your smiles and the ways that you look at life.” He encouraged graduates to hold tight to their memories with one another. “Class of 2022, I know that each and every one of you will be successful as you embark on your new journeys,” he continued. “I am extremely confident that you are all equipped to face the challenges that life will throw at you. If you get knocked down, Class of 2022, I know you will get back up and you will be stronger than ever.” “I wish that all of you live your life to the fullest,” he said. “Be the best version of yourself you can be.
Just as our favorite Viking Mr. (Jeff) Shriver and many others in this community have modeled before you, remember good, better, best. Never let it rest until your good is better and your better is best.” Valedictorian Sydney Petersen challenged her fellow classmates in her speech to discover their identities. “This is a question that each of us has spent the last 13 years trying to prepare for and come up with an answer to, but it isn’t something you can Google,” she said. “While some of us have an idea of who we want to become and what we want to do, others don’t. Not all of us know what we want to be when we grow up yet, and that’s OK.” “While high school was fun, it helped us create memories and friendships that will last a lifetime,” she said. “The time has come for us to turn a page in our lives. We’ve moved on from our childhoods into adulthood and now it’s time to find our passion. It’s time to learn what we will want to be if we haven’t figured it out yet or follow our dream if we already have.” “Class of 2022, I want to challenge you to continue to push yourself to your fullest potential no matter where your life may lead,” she said. Salutatorian Shane Wood also encouraged his fellow classmates to explore their identities by “Never stop discovering who you are.” “Never stop slowing down … and never be satisfied,” he also added.

“Life is good” was Tim Denton’s mantra. And his friends and family know that Tim’s optimistic outlook extended into all aspects of his life. He worked hard and played hard, and he lived and loved to the fullest. For Tim, “life is good” was a state of mind. Tim Denton, 73, Rochester, was surrounded by family when he peacefully left this world behind on 7,027+< 3$8/ '(1721 May 27, 2022 — a fitting tribute for a man who put his family first — always the proud, protective and loving patriarch who was there whenever needed. For many of his friends, Tim was their family, too. He was easy to get to know and he never met a stranger. Tim was born in Mexico, Mo., on Jan. 29, 1949, son of Homer A. and Edna L. (Brownfield) Denton. He graduated from Rochester High School, but not before he had started his more than 50-year truck driving career at the age of 16. He traveled many a long, lonesome highway that spanned the 48 continental states. One might imagine now that he’s made it to his last coffee shop, listening to “I’ll Leave This World Loving You” and “My Way.” In 1991, Tim married his true love, Darlene, and embraced his new family as his own. He and Darlene bought the Corner Tavern in Monterey, Ind., in 2005, and Tim “worked” both sides of the bar up until a few weeks ago. For Tim and Darlene, the business was their social life and the patrons were their friends. Along with Darlene, Tim is survived by sons, Jason Denton (April) and Mark Shambarger (Julie); and daughters, Jeni Moore (Brody) and Kendra Chudzynski (Dan). He was blessed with nine grandchildren, Ryan (Melisa), Kiley (Steve), Chandler (Kayla), Jaycee, Hailey, Brandon, Payton, Molly and Gemma; along with five great-grandchildren, Aaron, Mackenzie, Mason, Kinley and Ellie, and another, Baby Boy Freeman, on the way. He’s also survived by his sister, Sherry Benedict; a sister-in-law, Sandy Smith; nieces and nephews; and his best furry little buddy, Rocky. He was preceded in death by his parents; special aunt and uncle, Peggy and Paul Reasoner; and son, Capt. Rodney Shambarger. Cooper the cocker spaniel has also been waiting with wags and kisses for Tim to join him. Tim was a member of the Teamsters Local #364, Indiana Freemason Lincoln Lodge, the I.O.O.F., Lions Club of Monterey, American Legion, a trustee of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles and an auxiliary life member of the VFW. Tim’s family would like to thank Dr. and Mrs. Julius Sitjar for years of outstanding care and Stillwater Hospice of Fort Wayne for the comfort they provided to Tim and his family. If Tim were here, he’d also want to recognize his two close friends, Peter Bilt and Glen Livet. “One more and we’ll all go.” Per Tim’s wishes, his body was willed to the Indiana University School of Medicine for the advancement of medical education. Burial will take place at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Fulton County Animal Shelter, 1540 Wentzel St., Rochester, IN, 46975 (fultoncoanimalcenter.org) or to the Fraternal Order of the Eagles #852, 108 E. 4th St., Rochester, IN 46975. Please include “Tim Denton Memorial” in your check’s memo line. An open house gathering to remember Tim will be held from 3-6 p.m. Saturday, June 25, at Geneva Center outdoor pavilion, SR 31 north of Rochester. Food will be available.

Indiana starts 2022 post election audits Secretary of State Holli Sullivan announced today the start of post-election audits for the 2022 election cycle. Audits will begin this week in Fulton County, examining results of the 2022 primary. “Our post-election audits are another step Indiana takes to safeguard our elections ensuring Hoosiers are confident every time they cast a ballot,” Sullivan said. “Audits provide a checkand-balance on our elections process, verifying that all votes are accurately counted and proper election procedures are followed. That is why earlier this year, I announced we would double the number of post-election audits for the General Election.” The first audit begins today in Fulton County. At least 12 other counties will be audited this year, including Clark and Allen counties. Additional counties will be announced as audits are scheduled. “I am thankful for the partner-
ship of elections administrators in our selected counties. Their participation not only serves their residents, but voters across the state,” Secretary Sullivan added. The Secretary of State’s office conducts audits in partnership with the Voting System Technical Oversight Program at Ball State University in Muncie. Indiana’s post-election audits provide strong statistical evidence an election outcome is correct. This is done by manually checking a randomized sample of paper-voted ballots. In a postelection audit, ballots are not tallied by scanners. Every sampled ballot is hand-counted to determine if the initial machine readings are confirmed and accurate. Post-election audits are valuable because they can detect problems with election outcomes with a high degree of statistical confidence. Properly conducted post-election audits increase voter confidence and add another layer of security to elections.

Continued from page 1 erything else, the Honor Flights include two “major surprises,” and Rob does not want to spoil them for future Honor Flight participants. From the first moment on the Friday night before leaving, the brothers’ every need was attended to. “They even opened the car door for me,” said Rob. From the initial meet and greet and USO breakfast in Plainfield, they received a police escort to the airport (and back), where they were whisked through security to the chartered American Airlines plane piloted by an ex-Marine fighter pilot “trained to land on aircraft carriers.” At Ronald Reagan Airport in
D.C., the flight was greeted by a crowd including school children, and from there they began the 10 hour tour. They were divided into five buses, and Rob was awarded crayons and coloring books for being the youngest on the bus at age 68. The oldest was a 97-year-old World War II veteran. They took in all the memorials: World War II, Korea, Vietnam and those dedicated to Lincoln, Washington, all the while ensuring everyone was well fed and hydrated. Beckman was still moved recalling the visit to Arlington Cemetery and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, where they witnessed the changing of the guards, a ceremony performed in
increments of 21, reflecting the 21-gun salute. The guards do not speak or interact with onlookers, Beckman explained; however, during the ceremony, the sergeant-of-arms dragged his steel-heeled boot on the ground “to acknowledge we were there.” “I can’t say enough about it. They had everything down to the last minute.” The entire experience, Beckman noted, left him with a feeling of closure, and he heartily encourages other veterans to take part. “You don’t have to be in perfect health. They’ll get you around in a wheelchair … One thing about vets, they will help other vets.”

FATHER’S DAY The Cross hosts clue mystery evening fundraiser What do riddles, secrets and desserts have in common? Attendees can find out at the Clue Mystery Dinner 6 p.m. Saturday, June 25, at The Cross. Admission is free will donations which will go towards youth group activities within the church. Debbie Fernandez, secretary of The Cross, is in charge of setting up this event of mystery.
“I’ve done many of these Clue parties and they’re a blast,” she explained. “I set up five themed rooms with props and sounds; hide five clues in each room.” Attendees will have only fifteen minutes to find as many clues as possible by following instructions to switch rooms all before an air horn goes off. “It’s process of elimination, so the first team to send me a picture of the correct answer: who did it, what room and which weapon, will win the prizes,” Fernandez states. In addition to the mystery rooms, a meal will be served that consists of chicken bacon alfredo, garlic bread, salad and desserts. Childcare is also provided.
According to Fernandez, this fundraiser at The Cross event will help the youth of The Cross attend a weekend field trip this summer to Holiday World and the Ark. “It’s also a way to give individuals an opportunity to not only invest in the teens, but also give them a fun night with food, entertainment and childcare.” She also expressed that the free will donation aspect of the fundraiser is so that it’s affordable for everyone. You can explore the five different rooms for hidden clues to discover “who did it” 6-8:30 p.m. Saturday, June 25, at The Cross, 100 W. 3rd St. You can reserve your spot by calling (574) 2233107.

Down East Boys concert at Riverview Community Church The Down East Boys will perform 6 p.m. Sunday, June 12, at Riverview Community Church. They have traveled for over 30 years; from coast to coast, to Canada and Mexico. The group and its members have been honored with several awards by the Singing News Fans. The Down East Boys are in full time ministry, traveling over 200 days, performing 180 concerts per year. They have participated with several of the affiliate evangelists of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, including Franklin Graham, Ralph Bell and Jim Wilson; as well as other conferences and conventions across the country. In their 30 years, the group has recorded 22 projects with over 40 songs at the top of the Singing News charts. Their recording,
“Beyond The Blue” was released to rave reviews. Their goal is to choose songs that will encourage and challenge the Christian, while also reaching out to the lost, pointing people to the cross so that Jesus might be lifted up. The Down East Boys have been afforded many great accolades, but in the end, beyond all the success, you will find four men dedicated to serving Christ. Using their talents to encourage people and reach the lost is real success. Invite your family, friends and neighbors to join Riverview Community Church, 3780 S.R. 110, Tippecanoe, for this Gospel Concert. There is no ticket charge. An opportunity for a very generous love offering will be given. For more information contact Pastor Rod Ruberg, (574) 223-4193.

William Abbott art show coming to Native Nook The Native Nook, 616 Main St., Rochester, will be showing the work of Fulton County painter William Abbot from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, June 26. Through the early and mid 1960’s, Abbott worked on landscapes, primarily renditions of fall and winter woodland scenes by artists like Robert Wood. Wet on wet was his most used technique, but by 1968, pallet knife techniques were also showing up in his work. 1969 was a pivotal year for Abbott’s art, when he began creating abstract paintings. Around 1973, he began using spray cans and a technique of deflecting the overspray to create a set of modern paintings based on construction sites. His work slowed in the late 1970s, and his last paintings were in 1981. For more information, visit thenativenook.com.

Ivy Tech Kokomo honors Rochester teacher as top dual credit faculty member Ivy Tech Community College has honored Valerie Hoover of Twelve Mile, an English and Education teacher at Rochester High School since 2004, as one of 19 individuals across the state selected to receive the inaugural Excellence in Dual Credit Instruction President’s Awards, the highest honor for Ivy Tech dual credit faculty. At a banquet in Indianapolis June 8, the College honored each of the winners for their excellence in instruction and their positive impact on the dual credit students that they served during the 2021-2022 academic year. A committee made up of Ivy Tech faculty, program chairs and college administration selected the honorees based on nominations from various stakeholders including dual credit students, secondary and post-secondary administrators and Ivy Tech K-14 team members. Lori Kixmiller from Fishers High School was named the 2022 statewide award recipient at a ceremony in Indianapolis this week. “Dual credit faculty serve an important role by introducing our high school students to college material and providing them with an opportunity to see that they can do college-level

work,” said Ivy Tech President Sue Ellspermann. “Without a dual credit experience, many students would never take the next step into higher education.” Mary Craig, executive director of K-14 Initiatives for the Ivy Tech Kokomo Service Area, said it was an honor to nominate Hoover for the award. “In the seven years I have worked with Valerie in the dual credit role, I have learned she is a relentless advocate for her students as well as a perpetual, consummate professional in all she does — a stellar representation of Ivy Tech’s mission and values,” Craig said. “Rochester Community School Corporation is fortunate to have a teacher of her caliber and integrity on staff.” Hoover teaches five collegelevel Education courses at Rochester High School through Ivy Tech’s dual credit program. Tara Kaser, Education department chair for Ivy Tech’s Kokomo Service Area, seconded Craig’s assessment. “Valerie puts in the time and effort to make sure that her classes are interesting and her students want to be there,” Kaser said, noting the interactive projects and field experiences that Hoover utilizes. “It is clear her students trust her and feel supported by her. As should be the case with all teachers, Valerie is her students’ number one advocate.” Kaser said Rochester students can earn up to 14 college credits, representing about $2,000 worth of college classes per student, through the dual credit Education courses Hoover teaches. The majority of those credits can transfer directly into Ivy Tech’s Education programs. “By earning these credits, students essentially complete an entire semester of college work by the time they leave high school,” Kaser said. “That sets them up to earn their associate degree in a year and a half, or to easily handle the accelerated work of Ivy Tech’s ASAP program and, in just one year, be ready to transfer on to a four-year school as a junior.” The Excellence in Dual Credit Instruction President’s Award is modeled after the College’s President’s Award to recognize college faculty and adjunct faculty members from Ivy Tech locations throughout the state. “Our dual credit faculty work tirelessly to ensure high quality, college-aligned content to students for little to no cost, saving families thousands of dollars,” said Dr. Rebecca Rahschulte, vice president of K-14 Initiatives & Statewide Partnerships for Ivy Tech. “We are honored to be able to recognize dual credit instructors throughout the state through this award.”

Church to offer their condolences and support. Now, 18 years later, the memory of Kelsey lives on, even through people who never met her, including some who weren’t yet born when she died. Each Thanksgiving morning since 2004 faithful supporters show up for the “I’m Thankful Four,” a four-mile road run to benefit the Kelsey Mikel Memorial Foundation, which provides two scholarships to NorthWood High School seniors. The first is a $1,500 one-time scholarship to a senior member of the school’s yearbook staff and the second, the “Dreams Come True” award, given to a senior “with passion, vision and dreams, who has plans to impact the world in positive ways.” The scholarship provides ( 4V[OL $1,000 annually for four years to a senior NorthWood Y /L -VY ;OL )V`U student who applies and is then selected by the nineZ ElkAfter person board, which includes Mikel. year’s o Edithis :LL 7HNL tion Reachin awards are given, Mikel said theVol. foundation have ch g Elk 35, No.will hart, Kos 3 provided more than $105,000 in aid to students. ciusko, Nob The annual run and walk, which began only seven le And LaG months after Kelsey’s death thanks to the organization www.seniorli range Counties of family friends, has grown into a popular Thanksgivfenewspaper s.com ing morning event that attracts hundreds of runners, walkers and supporters each year. “If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” (Galatians 5:25) At the close of an important speech to Congress Jan. %\ 5(9 521 6, 1941, Presi385.(< dent Franklin D. Roosevelt shared his vision of the kind of world he wanted to see after World War II was over. He envisioned four basic freedoms enjoyed by all people: Freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want and freedom from fear. To some degree, these freedoms have been achieved on a wider scale than in 1941, but our world still needs another freedom, a fifth freedom. People need to be free from themselves and the oppression of their sinful nature. In the New Testament the legalists thought they had the answer to the problem in laws and threats, but the apostle Paul has explained no amount of legislation can change man’s basic sinful nature. It is not law on the outside, but love on the inside that makes the difference. We need another power within, and
that power comes from the Holy Spirit of God. Here is the Christian’s check list as found in Galatians 5:1-26: First, are you standing free (Galatians 5:1)? Your freedom in Christ is a costly thing, for it cost Jesus his life. In him, you stand free; the yoke of the Old Testament law has been removed (Acts 15:6–11). Second, are you falling (Galatians 5:4)? To fall from grace does not mean to lose one’s salvation. It means to move out of the sphere of grace into the sphere of law. It means to substitute regulations for a personal relationship with the Lord. Third, are you running on course (Galatians 5:7)? Or has false teaching gotten you on a detour? Fourth, are you being leavened (Galatians 5:9)? Jesus used leaven to picture sin (Matthew 16:6–12). Like yeast, false teaching is introduced quietly, it grows secretly and soon it affects every part of your life. Fifth, are you serving others (Galatians 5:13)? Freedom brings with it the responsibility to serve. Love motivates us to fulfill the law of God (Romans 13:8–14). Remember, biblical love is the decision to compassionately, righteously and sacrificially seek the well-being of another. Just as Jesus loved us, we Authorized Dealer

are to love one another. For by such love everyone will know that we are his disciples (see John 13:3435). Since the Son of God served us through love, why would his disciples expect to do anything less? Sixth, are you walking in the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:16)? Life, not law, changes behavior; and as you yield to the Holy Spirit, Christ’s life is manifest in the fruit of the Spirit. Law works by compulsion from without, but grace works by compassion from within. Remember, “Every time we say, ‘I believe in the Holy Spirit,’ we mean that we believe there is a living God able and willing to enter human personality and change it.” — statement by J. B. Phillips. Student receives Next Generation Scholarship The Indiana Commission for Higher Education recently awarded 200 Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarships. Twelve of the recipients will be joining the Indiana Wesleyan University community and pursuing an education degree. Among them will be Makenna Beall from Rochester Community High School. Students were selected through a competitive process and will receive $7,500 annually (up to $30,000 total) for committing to teach in Indiana for at least five years after graduating college. Students needed to have a 3.5 cumulative GPA, graduate in the top 20% of their high school class or earn a score in the 20th percentile on the ACT or SAT to qualify for the scholarship. “At Indiana Wesleyan University, our faculty believe deeply that teaching is — and will remain — an admirable career path,” said Dr. Anita Manwell, professor and dean of the School of Teacher Education at IWU. “Knowing these scholars are already committed to teaching in Indiana after graduation sets them up for success before they even begin their studies at IWU. And when you combine the passion of these students with the Christcentered and rigorous curriculum they’ll be engaging in at IWU, there is no doubt in my mind that they will be prepared to make a significant difference in the lives of others with a degree from the School of Teacher Education.”
