In 2023, the American Cancer Society estimates there are 40,270 new cancer diagnoses in Indiana, with 13,660 dying from the disease. And for every individual facing this diagnosis, there are loved ones dealing with the dire emotional and economic problems associated with treatment. The family of Joe Shidler of Argos knows this all too well. In 2011, Joe was diagnosed with leukemia and died in 2014. During that time the family formed a Relay For Life team, which they continued until 2020, when the team turned into Joe’s Hope Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit

dedicated to providing support for cancer patients. Joe’s brother, Dustin Shidler, is president of the foundation formed to help families like his. “The last thing they should have to worry about is where money is coming from,” he stated. Joe’s Hope seeks to help with car, mortgage and utility and other regular payments, which can become burdensome on top of medical bills and other, often unforeseen, difficulties. For example, the foundation recently provided a $250 gas card to help cover the expense of driving to Kokomo three times per week for chemotherapy treatments. Joe faced similar problems, said Dustin, who recalled his brother saying, “I don’t know how much longer I can go on
like this.” In the event money is not a problem, Joe’s Hope can help find other resources families may be unaware of. “We are hardpressed not to be able to find something to help,” said Dustin, even if it simply means being emotionally supportive. Joe’s Hope fundraisers primarily involve monthly work at Fulton County Recycling Center, for which Dustin is grateful to the center’s director, Stacy Hart. They also volunteer at the Pork Producers’ Fulton County Fairground stand, and they serve buffalo burgers at Fulton County Historical Society’s Trail of Courage event.
