Girls on the Run —

Helping Riddle girls explore their potential %\ .(,7+ .1(33 $VVRFLDWH (GLWRU It certainly goes without saying the end of the 2019-20 school year was rough on students. Without exception, students at all levels of education were abruptly yanked from their classrooms, athletic fields and other activities they enjoyed. At the time, no one realized the cancellations were just the beginning of what would become more than a year of unprecedented disappointments. Such was the misfortune of the 2020 class of Riddle Elementary’s Girls on the Run. A national, nonprofit organization with a local chapter based in South Bend, Girls on the Run “designs programming that strengthens third to eighth grade girls’ social, emotional, physical and behavioral skills to successfully navigate life experiences.” Girls on the Run is a physically activity based positive youth development program that inspires girls

to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. The vision of the program is “a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams.” In Fulton County, the program specifically is available to third through fifth grade girls at Riddle Elementary. This year, 19 young ladies participated in the program, according to the group’s leader, Charlee Schwenk, who also serves as a physical education teacher at the school. Ordinarily the group is limited to 14 girls, but the local chapter allowed them to add to that number this year, partly because of what happened in 2020. Schwenk explained that after school was closed they attempted to continue the twice-weekly meetings in a virtual format. Unfortunately the results weren’t as successful as the intention, resulting in a dissatisfying conclusion for the girls and

their leaders, alike. “Girls on the Run is a 10-week program that meets twice-a-week after school,” said Schwenk. “We do some running (including through the I.O.O.F. Cemetery next to the school) and give the girls a chance to build friendships and confidence. Some of the girls don’t have the best home life and we want to help them develop into the best people they can be. We help them to develop their self-esteem and get them to believe in themselves.” Schwenk added the community and many of its organizations have been very helpful and supportive during the local program’s four years of existence. Many have offered donations to help not only support its overall mission, but also have provided the resources for scholarships to girls who might not ordinarily be able to afford the program’s $160 fee. “We’ve never turned away a girl because of lack of resources,” said Schwenk. “This year, we were able

to provide the program free-ofcharge to everyone.” The idea to start the program in Rochester was initially brought to Schwenk by Chris Hunting, who at the time had a daughter in the appropriate age range. Schwenk initially turned down the proposal because of her schedule. Several years later she changed tack and decided the time was right to start the program at Riddle. This year’s group holds a particularly special spot in Schwenk’s heart. “This is a special group of young ladies,” she said. “I will miss them desperately next year.” An additional component of the program is a required community service project. This year, the girls chose to gather donations for the Fulton County Animal Center. Earlier this month, the group delivered four large boxes of donated goods to the shelter. “Third through fifth grade is a Continued on page 3

Akron native enjoys the art of making suds %\ 75$&(< 58&.0$1 )HDWXUH :ULWHU Akron native Mary Beth Gast was at a point in her life most mothers go through. She was officially an empty nester and for the first time she had extra time on her hands. “I was the kind of person who worked all day, came home, made supper, and helped the kids with their homework. Then they grew up. And I was like, what do I do?” she said. Gast found herself at an art fair browsing homemade soaps and fell in love with the concept. She and her husband Greg

had always lived a moderately sustainable lifestyle and knowing what ingredients were in a product were important to her. She bought a book, and started researching how she could make her own soap. That was four years ago. Gast began tinkering in her basement on a picnic table and what was once a fun experiment has turned into a full-blown, 25 hour a week hobby. The picnic table is gone and Gast’s basement is now home to Mud Lake Soap Shop. Lovely scents waft through the air and colorful bars of soaps, body butters and facial scrubs line multiple shelves and racks.

A repurposed laundry area is now a lab where Gast gears up with goggles, rubber gloves and an apron. Soap making tools, ingredients and her library of custom recipes set the stage for her soap making recreation. All of her ingredients are natural, organic and sustainable. She is even getting away from colored labels, and has eliminated plastic in her packaging process. “The important part to me is having the least impact on the environment,” she said. Even the bold, brilliant colors in her soaps come from natural products. “My green colors come from spinach. Walnut shell powder is used for browns, active charcoal creates black, carrots give an orange hue and madder root makes burgundy. A lot of people are concerned about using palm oils because it depletes the rainforest, but I only buy from a company that replants palm,” she said. She also uses cocoa and coffee in some of her recipes, but will only buy from fair trade companies when those ingredients are needed. She has a soap with honey in it she gets from a friend and her goat milk is supplied from a neighbor. On average, Gast makes 300 bars a week and has mastered 32 recipes. “I’ve created the recipes myself, so it’s a lot like chemistry, but it all came out of boredom,” she said. “I’ve always loved cooking and making new recipes, and creating soap is a similar process. The finished product is

pretty and I get to present it.” Gast has nine milk soaps, aloe vera juice soaps, specialty soaps, mechanics soap, holiday soaps and takes special requests. Her products can be found at local shops and online at mudlakesoaps.com. “I love it,” Gast said. “It’s not a job, it’s just such a joy. And hearing people say they love your soap, it makes you feel like you’re doing something good. I am a Fulton County girl for sure.”

Both she and her husband grew up and have lived in the Akron area all their lives. When she’s not working fulltime at Timbercrest or creating natural bars of suds and jars of body butter, she and her husband enjoy spending time at their Mud Lake home with their dogs, fishing, walking the trails and kayaking on the Eel river. “We’re stay-cationers. We love living here and enjoy being home. I feel very blessed,” she concluded.

dren’s program is for age 3 thru fifth grade, and the teen program is reserved for sixth grade and up. Both programs offer prizes and incentives for reading books. An adult program will be offered later in the winter. The theme, “Tails and Tales,” encourages children to explore the world around them and to discover what is special about so many of the animals who live with us on the planet. Some of the fun activities for the children’s program will include: A beaver craft, a 3-D lizard craft, building and flying a kite at Pike Memorial Park, a Paul Bunyan and blue craft, a sea horse craft, story walk at Pike Memorial Park and a rain gutter regatta. Children will receive fun prizes at designated point levels and will be eligible for a weekly drawing for additional prizes. Teen readers will receive scratch-off tickets for every three books they read to win prizes. They also have the opportunity to attend craft classes where they will make an upcycled silhouette animal art project, a spiral wind spinner, build and fly their own kite and participate in the library’s brand new teen game show. All summer reading program participants and their families are invited to attend the SRP summer finale cookout and game day from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, July 27. Stop in the library to register now, or go to its website or Facebook page and use the links provided. Most of the programs require you sign up for a time slot in order to attend. Individuals must be enrolled in the Akron Public Library’s summer reading program to be eligible for prizes and to attend event programming. Stuffed bears help make emergency visits easier %\ .(,7+ .1(33 $VVRFLDWH (GLWRU According to nationwide statistics, approximately 20 percent of emergency room patients are children. That statistic approximately holds true at Woodlawn Hospital in Rochester, according to Tina Sency, director of the hospital’s emergency de-

partment. Sometimes those ER visits are relatively minor — accidents that require stitches or a sprained ankle. Other times they are more serious — car accidents or broken bones. Whatever the reason or level of care needed at the hospital, the experience of visiting a hospital, much less the emergency room,

Pictured from left are J. Arthur Howard, lodge secretary; Tina Sency, Woodlawn Hospital; and Jon Mitchell, Masonic lodge worshipful master. Photo by Keith Knepp. can be a traumatic experience for a child. For the past four years, members of Masonic Lodge 79 have been providing stuffed bears to the hospital, which in turn passes them on to their young patients. The program was started by Austin Pugh, who was then serving as the local Masons’ worshipful master. Since then, the Masons have faithfully delivered boxes of the bears to the hospital, ensuring there will always be a plush friend available

in a time of need. J. Arthur Howard, the lodge’s secretary, said the funding for the program comes directly from his fellow Masons’ pockets. None of the money comes directly from the lodge nor its members’ dues. “Guys will give us $20, $100, whatever they can, to buy the bears,” Howard said. “They give the money specifically for this project. Each bear has a tag on its ear saying it comes from the Masonic Lodge and DeMo-

lay (the youth organization affiliated with the Masons). We’ve given away hundreds of them.” Current worshipful master Jon Mitchell said the program is something the lodge membership wants to keep going. “It’s important to them,” he said. “The bears help the kids calm down and gives them something to cuddle,” said Sency. “It really does make a huge difference. Little kids love them, but big kids like them too. We hand them out weekly, if not daily.”

Ask And Receive Mark 11:12-26

We are so proud of you!

Class of 2021

1619 Main, Rochester • 574-223-4920 HOURS: Mon.-Fri. 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Sat. 7 a.m.-6 p.m., Sun. 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

“Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.” (Mark 11:24) Read Mark 11:12-14: Jesus and his disciples didn’t spend the night in Jerusalem but in Bethany (Mark 11:12), a village less than two miles to the east (see John 11:18). Near there Jesus attempted to get some figs for breakfast, but there were none on the fig tree even though it had leaves. Though it was not the season for figs yet, the presence of early leaves was an indication fruit should’ve been appearing (Mark 11:13). Jesus cursed the tree so it might never bear fruit again (Mark 11:14). Read Mark 11:20-23: The next day they passed by the fig tree Jesus had cursed (see Mark 11:1214). In 24 hours, it had dried up from root to branch (Mark 11:20). Peter was stunned (Mark 11:21). How could this have happened — and so quickly? The answer,

fairy or Santa Claus, but you’ll be disappointed. However, if you have true, vibrant faith in the God of the Bible, you have spiritual authority to access divine power. God has already blessed you “with every spiritual blessing in the heavens in Christ” (Ephesians 1:3). Through faith in Jesus, you have access to divine power. It’s like having a contract with the electric company. Since you have a legal relationship with them, they provide you with electricity. Nevertheless, you must access that power yourself by flipping the light switch. Read Mark 11:24-26: Exercising your spiritual authority comes by taking responsibility to do what God has told you to do. This comes through prayer and through repenting of sin — for example the sin of unforgiveness. Prayer enables us to access God’s power in our lives, but unrepentant sin blocks God’s power. God delights in knowing his children will trust him with their heartfelt prayers guided by the Holy Spirit. And remember, God does answer prayer.

according to Jesus, boiled down to faith in God (Mark 11:22). Then he took the lesson a step further. He said, If anyone has faith and tells this mountain %< 5(9 521 385.(< (the Mount of Olives) to jump into the sea ... it will be done for him (Mark 11:23). Since Peter thought the withered fig tree was impressive, this concept must have really blown his mind. Faith’s authority allows the believer to speak directly to the obstacles of life (i.e., “mountains”) and get them to move. It’s important to know Jesus is not commending an extraordinary faith. After all, on one occasion he told his disciples something similar and said faith needed to be no larger than a tiny “mustard seed” (Matthew 17:20). The most important aspect of faith, then, is the worthiness of its object. You must be trusting in the right thing. You can place tremendous faith in the tooth

‘Opening of the Lake’ at the Moose Rochester Moose Lodge announced “Opening of the Lake” is happening Saturday, June 12. Tickets are available behind the bar at the lodge, as well as from board members, for the $2,500 drawing. A limited number of tickets will be sold, so get them while they are still available. Easy Street is back and will begin playing at 9 p.m., after the reverse drawing (all tickets are drawn, last ticket wins the $1,000 grand prize) finishes. One Eyed Jacks will be serving dinner, which is not included with ticket. No tickets are required to get in, to hear the band or to eat dinner, only for a chance to win part of the $2,500 prize. Rochester Moose Lodge is located at 1911 Westside Drive. For further information, call (574) 223-3914.

Golf outing for Compassionate Health Center Compassionate Health Center is busy planning its 11th annual golf outing, which will be held at the Round Barn Golf Club Friday, June 25. Farm Bureau Insurance will be sponsoring a putting contest at the outing. Golfers can try to sink a 60-foot putt for the chance to win $2,500. It will cost golfers a $5 donation per putt. Golfers who sink the putt will be entered in a putt off for the one grand prize of $2,500. Blake Hardesty will be filming this putt off, which will stream it live on the Facebook page. The contest is in addition to the hole-in-one contest on four different holes, which is being sponsored by Rochester Ford Lincoln. CHC is glad to be back after having to cancel its outing last year. Teams are still needed for the outing. The cost per team is $260 which includes the cart and green fees, snacks on the course and an awards luncheon after the event. Cash prizes are awarded in both A and B flights. They are also looking for hole sponsors for the event. This is the main fundraiser for the clinic and all funds go to help those without health insurance in Fulton County. Call the clinic for more information at (574) 223-6080, or visit its Facebook page.

Garage sales The annual Twelve Mile area garage sales will held Friday, June 25, and Saturday, June 26. Maps will be available downtown at the Twelve Mile post office and the Firehouse Cafe.
