Buddy’s Closet helps Mentone Elementary students in need By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer Mentone Elementary School has a new resource for students in need. Mentone special education teacher Kamry Sands and Mentone parent Amanda Gibson came up with the idea for Buddy’s Closet earlier this year. BUDDY’S CLOSET — Mentone Elementary School special education teacher, Kamry Sands, left, and Mentone parent, Amanda Gibson, started Buddy’s Closet this year at the school. Named after the school mascot, Buddy the bulldog, the closet provides clothing, underwear, socks and hygiene products to students in need.
by Boomerang Backpacks, which provides food for students in need, and the Miracle Tree program, which provides Christmas gifts to students and families in need and those on free and reduced lunch. “The numbers on all those things were really high,” said Sands, with her noting the total students in need worked out to 15% of the total student population. She said the program was aimed at those kids, though others may also be helped if there’s “an immediate need.” Buddy’s Closet has helped provide items for a Mentone family, which lost their home in a fire, and a foster care family. “Really our goal and our hearts are to help any kid who needs help,” said Sands.
The main kids in the program shop a few times each year. Many people have helped with the closet so far. “A variety of places have done donation drives for us as well as families which have just donated stuff to us,” noted Sands. There are a number of volunteers who take inventory and more, including Cardinal Services clients, who wash the clothes. If people wish to donate hygiene items or new or gently-used clothing, they may drop off items in a bin inside Mentone Elementary School. Sands and Gibson said donations of summer clothes for both boys and girls in sizes 5T to 14/16 are needed as well as shoes. Continued on page 3
