Musician brings her talent to the Times Theater %\ 75$&(< 58&.0$1 6WDII :ULWHU “I’ve been doing music my whole life. I don’t remember not being on a stage,” stated Kate Karter, Rochester. After graduating from high school in 2020, Karter moved to Florida to pursue her musical talents. She attributes her current success to the Orange Blossom Opry, in Weirsdale, Fla., where she regularly performs. She has performed with Bobby Randall, a former member of the Sawyer Brown Band, and she opened for Grammy award winner Linda Davis in Jacksonville. She is in the process of auditioning to open for Toby Keith and Billy Ray Cyrus in April. Her first single, “Come Home” was released in 2021. Her dad, Thad Stewart, is also a musician and a pastor at two churches; one in Akron and one in Gilead. Stewart joined his first band at age 13 and has been performing ever since. “Kate’s always been a really good singer. When she was three years old, she would get up in the pulpit area of the church where we would be playing and singing and I would put a guitar in her hand. Of course, she didn’t really
know how to play it at the time, but she would strum along,” Stewart said of his daughter’s musical upbringing. Karter has since learned to play 16 different instruments and frequently performs with her dad. She currently splits her time between Rochester and Florida, going wherever the shows take her. She also received an invitation to do some work in Texas this summer along with several other invites from across the country. In addition to splitting her time between two states, auditioning to open for Toby Keith and figuring out what her summer schedule looks like, Karter will also be assisting her dad with the Round Barn Opry project at the Rochester Times Theater. “When the Orange Blossom Opry took her in and set her up, I had two thoughts — if I can open an opry in town, that would give her a place to play when she’s here, and if I could do for somebody else’s kid what they did for mine — that would be awesome,” stated Stewart. “When dad brought up the idea, I was like yeah, that’s great. It would be cool to bring something here, especially since it’s Rochester, small-town USA,” said Karter. Karter and Stewart are

excited to work together on the program and have already begun reviewing auditions to showcase at future Round Barn Opry shows. Karter will be the emcee and will play the keyboard with the Round Barn Opry band. To learn more about the audition process and updates on the project, follow the Round Barn Opry on Facebook. “The smile on people’s faces after the show is what makes it worthwhile. Most of the time you have more time to set up and tear down than you do in the performance itself. But afterward, when you’re looking out at the people, and you see all the posts on social media and how happy they were and how excited it made them, that’s what makes it worth it for me,” she concluded.

Let’s study the Bible
The image of God (Read Colossians 3:1-11)
“Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; And have put on the new man, which %\ 5(9 521 is renewed 385.(< in knowledge after the image of him that created him.” (Colossians 3:9-10) It is not enough for Christ to be preeminent in the Gospel, the cross, creation, and the church; he must also be preeminent in our lives. Paul states very specifically how we should “practice the preeminence of Christ.” “Since you are risen with Christ, set your mind (affection) on things above!” (Colossians 3:1) In other words, let your earthly practice be worthy of your heavenly position. Once you were dead in sin (Ephesians 2:1-3), but now you are dead to sin. Christ is in you, the hope of glory (Colossians 1:27), and someday soon that glory will be revealed
(Colossians 3:4). In brief, Paul says, “Live up to what Christ has done for you!” This simple principle of Christian living is more powerful than all the rules and regulations men can devise. “You are made full in him” (Colossians 2:10); now live out that fullness in daily life. Oriental, Greek and Roman religions said little or nothing about personal holiness. A person could bring sacrifices, say prayers, and go away from the altar to commit terrible sins, and nobody would think he or she was inconsistent. Not so with Christianity. The new life within demands a new life without. Since we have died with Christ, we should put to death (“mortify,” Colossians: 5) impure behavior (see Romans 6). “Don’t live the way you used to live,” Paul cautions, “the way the unsaved crowd lives. Christ is your life, and you died with him. Now, let his life show through you day by day.” In Colossians 3:8-11, Paul compares the new life to a change of clothes: “Put off the old sins as you would take off a filthy garment, and put on the new life of holiness.” But notice we are able to do this because in Christ we have already put off the old man (Colossians 3:9); that is, in Christ the body of flesh (the sinful nature) has been put off through his true circumci-

sion on the cross (Colossians 2:11). Physical circumcision in the Old Testament meant entering into a covenant relationship with God. Our spiritual circumcision in Jesus Christ means the old nature has been put off, and we may now walk in newness of life. Though originally marred by sin, believers have been re-created (by a spiritual birth) to reflect God’s righteousness and holiness. When others see Christian believers, they are to see the character of our God. If you have not made your decision for Jesus Christ, now is the time to do it. First, read the Gospel of John in the New Testament. Second, accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior by praying and asking God for forgiveness. Third, commit yourself to live for Christ. Fulton County prepped for primary elections %\ '$9,' +$=/(',1( 6WDII :ULWHU Fulton County Clerk Teri Furnivall and her staff are now in the early courthouse voting phase of the 2022 Fulton County primary elections. These primaries mark Fulton County’s first election using voting centers, a change made effective Jan. 1. Fulton County is the 44th county in Indiana to adopt the voting center model, joining nearby Wayne, Tippecanoe and Cass counties. Voting centers, said Furnivall, “give folks the ability to vote in any of the locations available.” She emphasized the precinct system would remain intact; however, voters are no longer required to cast their ballots in a particular precinct location. The change was made possible after Fulton County obtained new election equipment, including electronic poll books, which are capable of linking the centers via secure internet connections, instantly updating the e-poll books as each vote is cast. The new equipment also ensures votes are backed up by a verified paper trail. While the rest of the state is using the equipment for the first time, Fulton started in 2020. “I did not want my last year to be the first year using new equipment,” said Furnivall. “We had the equipment and wanted to use it right away to make sure it works,” added Dawn Ziemek, first deputy clerk. “It has excellent security features and is very user friendly.” In spite of their best laid plans, however, some fliers were sent out with incorrect primary voting information due to typographical errors, said Furnivall. The following information was confirmed: • Early courthouse voting is now open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday until Friday, April 29; 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 23 and Saturday, April 30; the last day is 8 a.m. to noon Monday, May 2. • Early vote center voting is from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 30 at Grass Creek Fire Station and Aubbeenaubee Community Building; 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 23, at Talma Community Building
and Kewanna Community Building. • Election day voting at vote centers is from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 3. There are now six voting centers, down from the 10 centers in previous years; however, voters may cast ballots at any of these locations: • Fulton County North: Fulton County Historical Museum, 37 E. 375N, Rochester. • Fulton County West: Kewanna Fire Station, Community Room, 404 N. Toner St., Kewanna. • Fulton County South: Fulton Community Building, E. Dunn
St., Fulton. • Fulton County East: Akron Community Building, 815 E. Rural St., Akron. • Rochester East: Community Resource Center, 625 Pontiac St., Rochester. • Rochester West: Fulton County Fairgrounds, 1009 W. Third St., Rochester. Applications for absentee voting by mail must be submitted on or before April 21. Travel board applications may be submitted anytime until noon May 2. Applications may be obtained by calling (574) 223-7713.

They supported the Fulton County Parks, Fulton County Foundation, 4-H and many other organizations. They also established the chair for Environmental Sustainability in the College of Agriculture at Purdue University. Suzanne and Dick established an annual scholarship for a Fulton County student enrolled in the College of Agriculture at Purdue. They also established scholarships for students at Ancilla College and Ivy Tech College. An avid runner and bicyclist, he ran his first of six marathons when he was 50 years old. One of Dick’s favorite sayings was “leave everything a little better than you found it.” Dick shared some important people in his life who have made a big difference: Dad — He taught me a work ethic. Mom — Expected me to be a Christian and know the value of money. Suzanne – My wife for 57 years; she always supported and encouraged me. Harry Ray, RHS teacher — He encouraged me to attend Purdue University. Joe Hasler, college roommate — Best man in our wedding; gave me idea of starting a bank. Purdue University — For the inspiration the university gave me to use my God-given talent. Our kids and grandkids. First Federal family — For all the support the past 56 years. COUNTY REPORT
Robert J. Nellans U.S. Army Veteran
Robert “Bob” J. Nellans passed on Sunday, April 3, 2022, surrounded by his family in his home after a long battle with illness. Bob was born Sept. 22, 1942, at Kelly Hospital in Argos, to Robert K. and Margaret C. Nellans. He resided in the area of Marshall and Fulton counties all his life except for his time in the U.S. Army. 52%(57 - Bob was drafted into the Army in 1965. After 1(//$16 basic training in Fort Knox, Ky., Bob was stationed in Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., where he spent the remainder of his service. It was there he met Dorthy I. Kleier, a school teacher from Crocker, Mo. The two immediately hit it off, Bob declaring on their second date that they’d be married, even setting the date. Just six weeks before the wedding day of Dec. 27, 1966, Bob was involved in what should have been a fatal head-on accident with a drunk driver. Despite the massive injuries incurred, including lasting nerve damage to his right arm, he was able to fulfill the promise he’d made to Dorthy and the two wed on the planned day. Moving back to Indiana, Bob and Dorthy settled down in Argos on the family farm Bob had worked in his earlier years, Bob working in sales at the local Torx Products of Camcar and farming part time, with Dorthy teaching at Argos Schools. Upon the birth of their first child, Wes, Dorthy took a leave of absence from teaching to be an at-home mother to not just Wes, but their second child Kirk as well. It was during this time that Bob and Dorthy purchased the motorcycle Bob had always wanted, and he greatly enjoyed his BMW motorcycle until the fateful day that the throttle stuck wide open on the bike, whereupon Bob crashed at approximately 140 mph. This resulted in a lasting disability due to the massive injuries he received during that wreck. Bob was never one to take anything lying down, including the disability that carried brain damage, seizures and a host of other medical issues he’d deal with the rest of his days. Unable to perform at a fulltime job, he still managed to find ways to manage and maintain the family forest and tree farm, leaving the regular farming duties to his relatives, the Brights, who lived close by. He even managed to go back to school part time and attain five college degrees at nearby Indiana University of South Bend, including degrees in electrical engineering and computer science. Even though Bob was often confined to being home, he became hugely involved in amateur radio, with contacts in over 300 countries. He was a lifetime member of the AARL. An active member of Richland Center United Methodist Church since 1947, Bob joined the IOOF Richland Center Lodge #435 in 1970, and was a past chief patriarch of the Mt. Horeb Encampment #24 in Rochester and a captain of the associated Canton #9 in South Bend. He was also a Mason and a Shriner. Bob is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dorthy; two sisters, Linda “Susie” Nellans of California and Betty (Nellans) Click of Fort Wayne; sons Wes and Kirk Nellans and their spouses Jen and Kathy of Argos; and five grandchildren, Josiah Nellans, Laci Nellans, Emma (Nellans) Joyner, Isaac Nellans and Grace Nellans. A celebration of the life of Robert “Bob” Nellans will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 7, at Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester. Pastor Steve Hartman will officiate. Friends may visit with the family from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Military graveside honors will be conducted by the Fulton County Veterans Honor Guard and the U.S. Army Honors Team. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Bob’s name to the Richland Center United Methodist Church or to Plant a Tree. Interment will be in Richland Center IOOF Cemetery. Electronic expressions of sympathy may be made to his family at www.goodfamilyfh.com.

Indiana District 18 Senator Stacey Donato released the following statement March 22 concerning recent legislation to cut taxes. “Thanks to many years of fiscally conservative leadership, Indiana is in an extremely fortunate economic position. With state revenues continuing to outpace expectations, the General Assembly recently passed tax cuts for Hoosiers. “House Enrolled Act 1002 phases down Indiana’s income-tax rate to 2.9%, tied for the lowest rate in the nation, and could save Hoosier taxpayers up to $1 billion once fully implemented. This phased-in tax reduction is contingent on state revenue continuing to grow, ensuring we are still practicing the fiscal responsibility that got us here. “Hoosiers will also benefit from HEA 1002 repealing Indiana’s utility receipt tax, which will help combat rising utility costs. HEA 1002 requires utility companies to reduce their rates and pass the savings from this tax cut on to their customers. “Lastly, this legislation pays down pension debt in order to keep our promises to retired Hoosier teachers. These tax cuts come on top of the automatic taxpayer refund that was triggered at the end of fiscal year 2021, meaning not only will Hoosiers have taxes re-
duced going forward, but they will also receive a tax credit of about $125 when filing this year. “I take great pride in the fact that Indiana can simultaneously
return money to taxpayers, cut taxes and pay down debt, and I will continue to prioritize fiscally responsible policies like these during my time as your state senator.”

much money could we have invested for the jail project in 20 years and would an increase in taxes have been needed? Unfortunately, I can’t go back 20 years and fix this problem, but I can commit to not making the same mistake twice.” What changes would you like to make and how would those changes be made? Lewis: “Communication. I went to the fire department meeting last week to help answer questions from them. During our conversation, the department chiefs and I realized that if we attended each other’s meetings it would make understanding each of our needs easier. So, communication is something I will be working harder at.” Cowles: “The changes I would make would begin with the discussion that any taxpayer funded organization that has the name ‘Fulton County’ in it, better serve Fulton County as a whole or find a different funding source than the taxpayers of Fulton County. The information shared by our department heads for county property and asset needs to serve our citizens will not fall on deaf ears. Discussions will begin to take place today to separate wants from needs and develop a proactive plan to fulfill those needs in the future.”
What makes you a good candidate for the commissioner seat? Lewis: “There are several projects that I would like to work on. Our community has a child care shortage, and I feel there is a lot of work to be done to improve this issue. Another project is FEDCO; I have been pushing for change and feel we are headed in that direction. “It has been a pleasure working with the great citizens of our county and I would like the opportunity to continue to serve the taxpayer.” Cowles: “I was born and raised in Fulton County. I chose to stay and raise my family here because this is my home. I have a passion to see our county grow and develop in a way that benefits the people who live here and have raised their families here. “I am dedicated to not only being a mouth piece to turn around vocational opportunities in this county, but to put my boots on the ground and pull people to the table to accomplish better resources and opportunities for both our young people and our adults here in Fulton County. I put my pants on the same way as all of you. I will be the commissioner you look at and know I’ve done everything I believe is right for the success of our county.”

Movie scenes being filmed locally
Text and Photos By LEAH SANDER Staff Writer Christmas has come back to Mentone. Those visiting the town recently may have noticed holiday decorations have appeared again. They’re back up for good reason as part of the backdrop for the movie “Now I See.” The production is currently being filmed in Mentone as well as in Rochester and Talma in Fulton County. The Kosciusko/Fulton county area was picked for filming in part because of the local connection of the movie’s producer Joshua Stutzman. He’s originally from Mentone. Stutzman’s wife Carissa Stutzman, the film’s director and screenwriter, was “inspired by the town” and one old house in particular after a visit to Mentone. That led to her writing the script. The drama, “Now I See,” tells the story of Claire Lewis, a blind
woman who goes out looking for her missing 6-year-old daughter, Briar, following the girl’s disappearance at Christmas. “The core theme and message is a mother’s love for her daughter,” said Stutzman. Filming started last week and is expected to wrap up next week. The small production includes 21 roles with speaking parts and six main cast members. Among them are Annalise Basso who’s played LJ Folger on the TV series, “Snowpiercer,” and Steven Ogg, who appeared as Simon on “The Walking Dead.” “It’s a beautiful story,” Ogg said. “It’s always nice to be of service to someone who’s got a dream and a passionate project, which they do.” “Now I See” marks a foray into a fictional film for the Stutzmans, who’ve previously worked on documentaries. The couple co-founded the company Anthem Entertainment based in Santa Barbara, Calif. Filming thus far has taken the cast and crew to multiple spots

GETTING READY — The drama “Now I See,” is being filmed in Kosciusko and Fulton counties. Pictured Monday, March 28, the cast and crew prepare for a scene shot in a house in Mentone. From left: Producer Joshua Stutzman sets up a wreath for the Christmastime-set film as actors Steven Ogg and Leajato Robinson listen to screenwriter and director Carissa Stutzman and crew members get ready for the scene. in Mentone, including Ace Hardware and the Bulldog Saloon, and the Fulton County Courthouse in Rochester. Stutzman said he’s grateful for people allowing the crew to shoot in the locations and putting Christmas decorations out, as well as the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office for its technical help with “Now I See.” He said there will be nine months of post-production work before the roughly 90-minute movie is ready. He’s hopeful the film will be released in theaters in 2023.

Former Akron train depot moved to become coffee house 7H[W DQG 3KRWRV %\ /($+ 6$1'(5 6WDII :ULWHU The address of 101 W. Rochester St., in Akron has witnessed a lot of history. It was the site of the Akron Opera House and also hosted the Harris Drug Store and later Webb’s Family Pharmacy. Even after the building was torn down in fall 2017, people still utilized the corner to watch the town’s annual Fourth of July parade. Another chapter in the history of that corner, which some may know as where SR 14 and SR 19 intersect, continued Wednesday, March 23, when the former Akron train depot was moved there. DeLynn Geiger and Lori Tilden-Geiger spearheaded the move, having obtained the lot and old depot to establish The Grounded Coffee House at The Depot. They plan to open the coffee shop in 2023. “It really hit us when we were digging the foundation and finding some of those old bricks of the opera house,” shared Akron native Tilden-Geiger. “All the businesspeople that had their stores and their wares there before, you know we’re continuing that tradition of trying to serve Akron, it was just so meaningful,” she said, sharing what it means for her and her husband DeLynn to continue Continued on page 11

Valley teams top Fulton County business competition Tippecanoe Valley High School students have taken the top spots in a Fulton County student business competition. They achieved first and second place in the third annual Fulton Economic Development Corporation First Pitch Competition in Rochester Thursday, March 31. For the competition, high school students from Fulton County school districts (Caston, Rochester and Tippecanoe Valley) created business plans and presented them to a panel of judges. Juniors Brittany Benn, Abby Bowers and Carissa Slone took first place in the competition with their business, Reboot. Benn had been in an accident earlier in the school year and was confined to a medical boot for five months. Motivated by her experience, the group created the concept for a new type of medical boot that allows for interchangeable soles, an adaptable ankle locking system and breathable padding. The judges loved how the group turned Benn’s bad experi-
ence into something that could greatly benefit others in a similar position. Coming in second was senior Andrew Burke with his business, Hello World. He pitched the business concept of an app that allows audioto-audio translation. The app would provide its users with the opportunity to speak directly into their device, which would turn around and translate the phrase into the desired spoken language. Burke’s inspiration largely came from the inability to understand other languages and a desire to allow people from all backgrounds the chance to connect with others. The Valley students represented the TVHS Entrepreneurship class, which held its own competition on March 21 and 22 to select which teams would advance. In the class, 11 teams competed for two spots in the First Pitch Competition. Throughout the project, students gained valuable insight into the process of developing a business plan and business pitch.
Former Akron Continued from page 10 the history at that corner. DeLynn serves as the Akron Chamber of Commerce president. “And for me, it’s coming full circle because when I was in high school, I worked at Harris Drug Store there,” she continued. “I served coffee to my grandpa on the same grounds that we’ll serve coffee to the community, so coming full circle just like going back to your roots and we’re thrilled to continue that history in Akron and to preserve a historic building is the main thing.” Akron Town Council President Jim Saner echoed Tilden-Geiger’s take on the continuation of history. “A piece of history is going to replace a piece of history that was torn down,” he said. “It’s going to be a great (draw) for the town of Akron, a nice place for people to come together, gather and just sit down and have conversations.” “I’m just so proud of our town,” he added, noting Akron residents are envisioning plans to better the town and acting on them. Fulton County Council Vice President Ron Dittman, who serves District 2, said he is grateful to Tilden-Geiger and Geiger for bringing another business to town. “They’ve taken initiative and more power to them,” he said. Learning In Action Local leaders weren’t the only ones to watch the depot’s move Wednesday from where it sat along Front Street to a few blocks north on SR 19. More than 100 Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation students came out for it along with school staff. The kids in Ethyn Brumbaugh’s, Chris Rassi’s and Rosy Jansma’s fourth-grade classes at Akron Elementary School watched the move as part of their study of Indiana history. Tilden-Geiger recently spoke about the depot’s history to their students. All three said they were glad their students could have a close-up look at history. “It’s just neat to see that his-
tory being moved in front of their eyes,” said Rassi. For Derek Miller’s Tippecanoe Valley High School construction students, witnessing the depot move was less about history and more about structural engineering. “We never got to do any foundational work (this school year), so today we get to see the foundational work that we’ve been talking about in the books,” he said. “We’re seeing something that doesn’t really happen a lot, which is moving an entire building, lifting it up, and putting it on that foundation.” On The Move The work of moving the nearly 140-year-old building fell to Wolfe House & Building Movers of North Manchester. The depot was placed on a large power dolly and was driven by remote control to the site. As it moved along SR 19, workers lifted phone and electrical lines to allow the depot to pass through. With the depot at the site, Tilden-Geiger and Geiger will renovate the interior. Plans include adding a soda fountain.

Tilden-Geiger said getting a historic preservation grant may help pay for the work. “The town of Akron and the Akron Chamber of Commerce partnered together to apply to be on the National Register of Historic Places and that nomination is in process right now,” she said. “We worked with a consultant, Kurt Garner, and if (the designation is granted), there are 91 buildings, commercial buildings and residences that would be involved in this national historic district. So if that does come through, we would be eligible for some historic preservation grants.” Tilden-Geiger said she is grateful to all those who had assisted thus far with the depot project, including Pike Lumber Co. for maintaining the building, which ceased being used as a depot in 1976. “Everybody that we’ve asked for help has just stepped up and have gone beyond,” she said. “I love it that they’re doing it for the community. They’re not doing it for us; they’re doing it for the town of Akron, which is so cool.”

The Indiana Economic Development Association Foundation announced the U.S. Economic Development Administration has awarded a $100,097 grant to assist four regions in Indiana in creating a strategy to leverage each region’s agricultural assets. The grant will fund implementation of the Rural Economic Development Model, a first-of-its-kind process developed in Indiana to assist rural communities in creating new economic development opportunities for Indiana’s farmers. The U.S. EDA grant will enable the north central Indiana region, comprised of Cass, Clinton, Fulton, Howard, Miami and Tipton counties, to examine the agricultural output in their regions to identify opportunities for creating new markets, applications, or processing facilities that can enhance the local value of the agricultural output. This will create new markets and income for local farmers, generate more local jobs connected to agriculture and capture a greater source of revenue for the region’s communities. “Agriculture will continue to be an important economic driver for the foreseeable future. Fulton County is looking forward to working with the five other counties in our region to develop new opportunities for agriculture products produced and supplied within north central Indiana,” stated Tiffany Futrell, interim director of Fulton Economic Development Corporation. The Rural Economic Development Model was created as a collaboration between the Indiana Economic Development Association, Indiana State Department of
Agriculture and the Purdue Center for Regional Development with support from the Indiana Farm Bureau, Indiana Corn Marketing Council, Indiana Soybean Alliance and the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs. The Rural Economic Development Model employs a proprietary technology developed by PCRD that enables counties and regions to examine the agricultural output
unique to their locale, and then engages a local planning team composed of local economic development officials, farmers and other local stakeholders to create and implement a plan to leverage local agricultural outputs, expand existing agribusinesses and attract new economic opportunities. The 24-month process kicked off in the fourth quarter of 2021 and will be completed in July 2023.

The shortest day of the year has passed. As the day and night length change, nature changes. Male red-winged blackbirds have left wintering grounds south of my home in northern Indiana and are now numerous birds in the trees and cattails around the marsh by our pasture and at the bird feeders around our house. grackles come and go at the bird feeders. I’ve seen a cowbird at one of the bird feeders outside our dining room window. There are robins in the yard and I’ve seen a bluebird. I watch birds particularly. But many other critters that took shelter for the winter are now out and about. I’ve seen woodchucks and an opossum. The ‘possum, sadly, was in the road by our house, dead. I haven’t seen any ants. When I do, it will probably be in our kitchen. I don’t know how or where they get into our kitchen but they always do. I haven’t seen any crickets either, or spiders. We have a lady who cleans house for us three days a week and she hasn’t seen any spiders either. If she had seen one, she’d have let me know. She always tells me when she sees a spider, if I’m home. When I’m not home, she leaves a note. “I didn’t finish cleaning in the kitchen. There was a spider in the kitchen this morning.” I haven’t seen a cricket or a grasshopper this spring either. My brother and I used to hunt grasshoppers in a vacant lot across the street from
our house. Grasshoppers were abundant. I haven’t been in that lot in years but grasshoppers used to be abundant in a grassy field across from where I live now also but they aren’t now. I haven’t seen a grasshopper in the field across from my present home, not one, in several years. Butterflies are other insects that have declined in number. My brother and I used to hunt those, too, with nets. Those we caught we killed, then mounted on stiff paper, with wings spread. Flies and mosquitoes have declined. We have a barn and my daughter has two horses. When we moved here, flies and mosquitoes were abundant, flies especially in the barn and around the horses, several species of flies, including some very large ones which we called horse flies made very painful bites, on us and on the horses. They made riding a horse more exciting, however. When we were on a horse and a horse fly bit, it was likely to rear and run. It made horseback riding in our pasture more exciting. Mosquitoes were also abundant, super abundant. When

we went out when we first lived here, we wore bee-keepers hoods and nets because of the mosquitoes. They were thick as raindrops in a steady rain. Now, and for the last several years, I haven’t found the mosquitoes to be bothersome in several years, certainly not bothersome enough to make me wear a bee-keeper’s head net to go out. Now mosquitoes are just annoying.
It’s spring. Days are getting longer and they should be getting warmer, and they have but not every day. Yesterday the temperature when I got up, before sunlight, the temperature by our outside thermometer was 28 degrees The temperature afternoon, the high for the day, was only 34. I’ve had all I want of spring. I want summer, a daily afternoon temperature of 70 or higher.

Other heart attack symptoms include, but are not limited to, tingling or discomfort in one or both arms, back, shoulder, neck or jaw, shortness of breath, cold sweat, unusual tiredness, heartburn-like feeling, nausea or vomiting, sudden dizziness and fainting. Hospitals that have earned ACC Chest Pain Center Accreditation have proven exceptional competency in treating patients with heart attack symptoms. They have streamlined their systems from admission to evaluation to diagnosis and treatment all the way through to appropriate post-discharge care and recommendations and assistance in patient lifestyle changes.

“Woodlawn Hospital has demonstrated its commitment to providing Fulton County with excellent heart care,” said Deepak L. Bhatt, MD, MPH, FACC, chair of the ACC Accreditation Management Board. “ACC Accreditation Services is proud to award Woodlawn Hospital with Chest Pain Center Accreditation.” Hospitals receiving Chest Pain Center Accreditation from the ACC must take part in a multi-faceted clinical process that involves: completing a gap analysis; examining variances of care, developing an action plan; a rigorous onsite review; and monitoring for sustained success. Improved methods and strategies of caring for patients include streamlining processes, implementing of guidelines and standards, and adopting best practices in the care of patients experiencing the signs and symptoms of a heart attack. Facilities that achieve accreditation meet or exceed an array of stringent criteria and have organized a team of doctors, nurses, clinicians and other administrative staff that earnestly support the efforts leading to better patient education and improved patient outcomes. The ACC offers U.S. and international hospitals like Woodlawn Hospital access to a comprehensive suite of cardiac accreditation services designed to optimize patient outcomes and improve hospital financial performance. These services are focused on all aspects of cardiac care, including emergency treatment of heart attacks.
As a general surgeon, Dr. Fleshman sees patients for procedures like colonoscopies, appendix and gallbladder removal, hernia repair, thyroid nodule removal, breast biopsy and breast surgery, as well as a wide range of other conditions. Many of the procedures she offers can be done using minimally-invasive techniques, where patients typically experience less pain and quicker recovery. Dr. Fleshman looks forward to seeing and treating patients from the Fulton County community, right down the road in Logansport.
