Rochester resident happy to be home again %\ 75$&(< 58&.0$1 )HDWXUH :ULWHU “We feel super lucky to have all of our family within a 20-mile radius,” stated Hannah Bahney, Rochester. After graduating from IU Bloomington, Bahney and her husband, Alex, lived in both Indianapolis and Michigan, trying to find the right place to raise their growing family. However, they never felt settled until a few years ago, when they decided to come back to their roots. “My husband and I have three daughters, and we are happy to

be back here so they can grow up around their grandparents,” she said. Bahney teaches part-time at Grace United Methodist Church preschool and recently became the marketing and communications coordinator for the Northern Indiana Community Foundation. “I love working at Grace, but I was also excited to have an opportunity to come back to the Foundation,” she said. “My very first summer internship in college was with the Foundation and now I’ve come full circle.” As the marketing and communications coordinator at NICF,

Bahney will be communicating with the public about what the foundation does through its website, Facebook page and other marketing avenues. One of Bahney’s primary goals in her new position is to help people understand how they can contribute to the betterment of their community through NICF. “I am looking forward to speaking to the donors in the community, learning the story behind their philanthropy and sharing their stories in NICF’s annual report,” she stated. “Everyone at the Foundation loves their community and they work really hard to make it a better place. There’s a lot of good coming from this building and I’m really happy to be part of it.” Bahney has immersed herself in the community in other ways, too. She is the treasurer for the Fulton County Youth Center Board, which supports The Outlet Youth Center. “I saw a need in the community and I wanted to be a part of the solution,” she offered. “I knew it was a struggle for Fulton County and the surrounding

The center provides tutors, a good snack and positive mentors.” Bahney also helped coordinate the Friday morning preschool program at the Outlet Youth Center. Before starting at Grace, she volunteered her time to the preschool program, which has grown from a small number of children to a thriving program. “They’re read to, they get a snack and they do a craft,” she said. The preschool is still in place, with Patience Hisey at the helm. “It’s been awesome,” Bahney said of her experience with the Outlet Youth Center. She is an active member at Grace United Methodist and serves on the preschool board there as well. Bahney will be starting a Fulton County MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) group in the fall. When time allows, Bahney likes spending time with her family. “We play board games and hang out at home. We enjoy spending time outdoors, too. We like to fish and hike, and we have a really big garden every year,” she said. Bahney can also be found on the soccer and T-ball fields lending a hand to her husband, who is a coach. “My oldest daughter just started in the horse and pony club at 4-H and that has been fun to be a part of,” she added. “Fulton County has provided a lot of opportunities for me, and I’m super excited to be back here with my husband and the girls.”

Life skills class provides opportunities for special needs students Text and photos By KEITH KNEPP Associate Editor Gathered together toward the end of a bustling hallway inside Rochester High School are an extraordinary group of students. Led by teachers Tia Heishman and Myra Dunfee, and helped by six instructional assistants and a nurse, the life skills class provides metered instruction to both middle and high school special needs students. The class began at RHS in the mid-2000s by Dave Apt, who served as its first instructor. “The purpose of the life skills class is to prepare the special needs students for life after high school, whatever that looks like for them,” said Heishman. “Every one of the students is different with a wide range of ages, abilities and skills.” Currently there are 18 students in the class, some of whom spend their entire school day inside the classroom. While a couple of students attend on alternating days, others take part in exploratory classes with their classmates, including physical education, art, foods and welding. This allows them to spend time with their

peers and develop trade and social skills. Heishman noted that students in her class have a wide variety of special needs, including emotional disorders, social skills and learning disabilities. She has been involved with the class for five years, although this is her first as a teacher, having previously served as an instructional assistant. She developed a personal interest in the class after her oldest son was diagnosed as a special needs child. She now holds a degrees in both elementary and special education, and holds a certification in the OrtonGillingham method of teaching spelling, reading and phonics. The school employs a psychologist to help determine whether a student needs to be a part of the life skills class. Similar classes exist in both Riddle and Columbia elementary schools, led by Jessica Melton and Chrissy Flynn, respectively. Many students in the Rochester Community School Corporation progress in the life skills program through the three buildings as they get older. Heishman said her students are a pretty resilient group of kids. She noted they have done extraordinarily well with all the

uncertainties and difficulties of COVID. “I’m proud of my kids,” she beamed. “They have accepted and followed the rules. Obviously, none of us wanted to be wearing masks, but we all did what we had to do to stay in school. I believe they handled it better than most. I know I might face some of the biggest challenges, but I truly think I have the best group of kids in the building.” She also noted that she develops personal connections with the families of her students in an effort to put together the best learning plan for each child. While she offers a general lesson theme for the class, the instructors work with students at their individual level and pace. One of the assistants, Mary James, also serves as a job coach. In this role, James works with local businesses to provide opportunities for the students to learn work ethic and habits while serving as volunteers. The end goal is to move them into a paid position after they finish high school. “If I can walk away at the end of the day thinking I’ve done something to better my students, then that’s a good day,” concluded Heishman.

OBITUARIES James A. Brugh

Edgar Hunter

German Teacher

Construction Company Owner

James A. “Jim” Brugh, 73, passed away Thursday, Feb. 17, 2022, at the Mayo Clinic Hospital, St. Mary’s Campus in Rochester, Minn. This followed a nearly one-year battle with lung disease. On Sept. 24, 1948, James Arthur Brugh was born, the second son of Joseph Leonard and Mil-$0(6 $ dred Wentzel Brugh. Growing up, he shared his %58*+ childhood with his older brother, Randy. Jim graduated from Rochester High School in 1966. After a brief stint at Indiana State University, Jim transferred to Manchester College to continue his studies in German, where he graduated in 1970 with a bachelor of arts in secondary education. During his Manchester years, he studied in Germany at Philipps-Universität Marburg, perfecting his linguistic skills. Later, Mr. Brugh earned his master of arts from Indiana University. On July 1, 1972, Jim married Ronda Rae Hood at the St. Joseph Catholic Church. They shared nearly 50 years of life’s adventures. From their union came four sons and a daughter, with two more generations following. With great dedication and devotion to his students, Mr. Brugh, a master instructor, taught German for more than four decades at Culver Military Academy. He held the Eugene C. Eppley Chair of Foreign Language from 1998 to 2014. Voted on by the student body, Jim received the Kaser Award in 1995 for recognition of his scholarly interests, enthusiastic teaching, sympathetic understanding and wise council. He was an esteemed role model, admired by his students and respected by his peers. Mr. Brugh took great satisfaction in helping to provide the skill sets necessary to empower the success and confidence of his students. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he was the head coach of the boys varsity soccer team from 1984 to 2014, making him the longest-serving head soccer coach in the state of Indiana. He was an assistant coach for 10 years prior. He guided the Eagles to the state finals on multiple occasions, inspiring his team for 40 years. As a musician, Jim played his trombone for student musicals and on stage for various musical ensembles at the Eppley Auditorium at Culver Military Academy. He also played big band and jazz at other non-school venues. As a self-taught harmonica player, he would often play songs in German class for his students to sing along. In 1982, a family tradition was established by Jim and Ronda and their children staying at a lake resort near Hackensack, Minn. They later bought their own cabin in that area. Many memories were made at their cabin, where the family enjoyed fishing, exploring and embracing nature together. Jim was a skilled handyman, adept at fixing anything around their country home. He passed those skills on to his children. He enjoyed woodworking very much, culminating in more recent years with turning bowls from logs on his lathe for friends and family. As the patriarch of his family, Jim was especially proud to see the arrival of each of the grands and great-grands. The Brughs enjoyed taking to the roads in their motorhome to travel to Arizona, California and Texas to visit other members of their family. Left to cherish Jim’s memory are his wife, Ronda of Rochester; a daughter, Audra Lomba and husband Ray Anthony of Valley Center, Calif.; two sons, Jason Brugh and wife Nicole of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Jim Brugh and wife Melissa of Granger; 10 grandchildren, Addison Brugh, Harper Brugh, Tenaya Brugh, Zander Brugh, Jackson Hayes, Ashlyn Hayes, Sierra Bryant and husband Justin, Lily Lomba, Raena Lomba and Myla Lombal; two great-grandsons, Ira and Odin; and a brother, Joseph Randall “Randy” Brugh of Rochester. Jim was preceded in death by two sons, Joel A. Brugh July 28, 2009, and Joshua A. Brugh April 3, 2017; in-laws, Doris Hood Dec. 24, 2018, and Kenneth Hood Oct. 2, 2004; parents, Mildred Brugh Nov. 5, 2012, and Joseph Brugh Oct. 15, 2014. A celebration of the life of Mr. Jim Brugh will be at the Culver Academies chapel Friday afternoon, March 4. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. A service will follow at 4 p.m. Jim will be laid to eternal rest on the family plot at the Rochester IOOF Cemetery. Masks are preferred to keep everyone safe. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to Mayo Pulmonary Medicine, 200 First St. SW, Rochester, MN 55905. Online expressions of sympathy may be made to his family at www.goodfamilyfh.com.

Ivy Tech sponsoring high school science fair Ivy Tech Community College is sponsoring its second science fair for high school students throughout the Ivy Tech Kokomo service area. Environmental biology is the subject of the fair, set for March 4, that will allow students to show off their scientific knowledge. Tammy Greene, PhD, who serves as chair of Ivy Tech Kokomo’s life and physical sciences programs, said parents, teachers and community members are invited to the fair. The fair will be open from 4-6 p.m. in Hingst Hall, the community room located in Ivy Tech Kokomo’s Health Professions Center on the campus at 1815 E. Morgan St., Kokomo. Eighteen students have registered to participate. Greene said the fair also will offer area high science students an opportunity to compete for a variety of prizes. In the junior/ senior category, first prize will be a scholarship for one free class at Ivy Tech Kokomo and a tablet, with second prize being a free class. In the freshman/sophomore category, first prize is a $200 gift card at Barnes and Noble and second prize is a $100 gift card. Greene has worked with area

science teachers to share this opportunity for their students to learn more about Ivy Tech Kokomo’s science education facilities and the college’s associate transfer degree in biology. The Transfer Single Articulation Pathway in biology gives Ivy Tech graduates the possibility of transferring to any state institution of higher education as a junior to pursue a bachelor’s degree in biology. “With this program, approved by the Indiana Commission for Higher Education, Ivy Tech is able to offer a program majoring in biology that mirrors what students take in their first two years at a university,” she continued. “The degree provides training in introductory biology in the first year with majors-level chemistry along with classes in physics, molecular biology, genetics, and ecology in the second year.” With bachelor and master degrees in human biology from the University of Indianapolis and a doctorate in biological anthropology from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Greene teaches many of the life science courses for Ivy Tech Kokomo. She can be reached at (765) 252-5532 or tgreene30@ ivytech.edu.

He was shot at like an enemy (Job 6:4; 16:12–13), hunted like a wild animal (Job 10:16), covered by darkness (Job 19:8), uprooted like a tree (Job 19:10) and put into a furnace (Job 23:10). His wife discouraged him, his three “friends” attacked him and the Lord seemed to abandon him. Job was a sinner. Job had said some rash things during this discussion, but unlike his friends, he had spoken the truth

condemnation or restoration? Job was a receiver. Job had wanted to go to court and argue law, but instead he went to the altar and experienced grace. He received forgiveness, friends, family, wealth and honor, twice as much as he had before. God does not guarantee this kind of happy ending in this life to everybody who goes through trials (Hebrews 11:36–40), but he does promise to reward all who are true to him (Revelation 2:10). Job came out of the furnace a better person (Job 23:10), and so can you if you will trust God and let him have his way. God is not obligated to make the righteous healthy and rich or the wicked sick and poor, but Job was blessed by God. Job’s suffering was replaced with earthly glory, but today’s Christian believer’s suffering will be transformed into heavenly glory. Therefore, our sufferings are not in vain, for the Lord is working out all of his glorious purposes. Read Ron Purkey’s Bible study outlines at www.rcpbibleoutlines.com free on the website. about God (Job 42:7). Job had a new understanding of God’s power and purpose (Job 42:2) and he realized he had to repent. Job’s sufferings gave him a new vision of himself and of the glory and greatness of God (Hebrews 12:11). Job was a servant. Four times in Job 42: 7–8, God called Job “my servant.” Although he had weaknesses and failures, Job served God during his time of suffering. By maintaining his faith in God in spite of trials, Job unknowingly silenced the devil and revealed to the world God is worthy of our trust and worship, no matter how much he allows us to suffer. In the will of God, trials work for us, not against us (Romans 8:28; 2 Corinthians 4:16–18); therefore, we can work for God as we suffer. Suffering can be a ministry. Job was an intercessor. The friends had said some unkind things to Job and some terrible things about Job, yet he forgave them and prayed for them. The friends had to do what they admonished Job to do: confess their sins and repent. Do you pray for people who have wronged you (Matthew 5:43–48)? Do you pray for

Railroad tracks repaired in Mentone %\ /($+ 6$1'(5 6WDII :ULWHU Railroad tracks running through Mentone have been repaired. Norfolk Southern railroad and the Indiana Department of Transportation filled in gaps with asphalt along the tracks that run across SR 25 and SR 19 in town Tuesday, Feb. 15.

Town leaders had previously expressed concerns about the condition of the crossings. The crossings were rough enough at least a few vehicles sustained flat tires. Mentone Town Council Member Tim Croy noted he believes additional repairs will be made once the weather gets warmer. He also thanked people for contacting the railroad about the tracks’ condition.

Starting last week, the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office will be stepping up patrols to help curb dangerous and aggressive driving. The enforcement campaign will run from Friday, Feb. 25, through Monday, March 21. The safety initiative is designed to reduce crashes and traffic fatalities and to promote safe driving around St. Patrick’s Day and the NCAA Tournament. It also comes at a time when roadway deaths continue to climb across the state and nation. In response, officers will be conducting high-visibility patrols during the next several weeks, showing zero tolerance for anyone driving aggressively, over the speed limit or under the influence. The extra enforcement is funded through National Highway Traffic Safety Administration grants administered by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute. “Every person that chooses to drive recklessly or impaired represents a serious threat to public safety,” said Sheriff Chris Sailors. “Choices behind the wheel matter. One mistake is all it takes for someone to get injured. We’re asking all drivers to take responsibility and make smart decisions. Let’s work together to keep our roads and community safe.” Nationwide, traffic fatalities continued to rise at a record pace last year, according to newly released federal data. NHTSA projects an estimated 31,720 people were killed on U.S. roadways in

the first nine months of 2021, a 12% increase from the same period in 2020. In Indiana, preliminary data from ICJI shows 941 people died in fatal crashes last year. While that’s up 5% from 2020, it’s a 16% increase from pre-pandemic 2019 and represents the highest number of traffic fatalities since 2005. Alcohol and drug impairment, distracted driving, speeding and not wearing seat belts are some of the leading causes behind the rise in fatalities. “Last year, Indiana saw more traffic fatalities than we’ve seen in over a decade, and it doesn’t appear to be improving,” said Devon McDonald, ICJI executive director. “So far this year, fatal crashes in Indiana have claimed the lives of 2.5 people every day on average with over 100 lives lost already. It’s going to take an all-hands-on-deck approach to turn this around.” Throughout the campaign, the department will be encouraging motorists to focus on safe driving and follow the rules of the road. This means wearing a seat belt at all times, driving sober, watching for pedestrians, driving distraction-free and obeying all posted speed limits. However, some precautions should be taken before getting behind the wheel. For plans that involve alcohol, designate a sober driver ahead of time or plan to use public transportation or a ride service to get home safely. “We cannot and should not tolerate the continuing crisis on our roadways,” said Robert Duckworth, ICJI traffic safety director. “Every driver and vehicle occupant has a responsibility when traveling. We need more people to take this seriously and to drive like their life depends on it – because it does.” Motorists are encouraged to call 911 if they encounter an impaired or unsafe driver on the road.
