In the first week of 2023, Shopping Guide News of Fulton County asked several residents what they were looking forward to in the coming year. Many are business owners, and in spite of some of the dire economic predictions heard in the national media, we found them to be genuinely enthusiastic, with some even looking to expand in 2023. Mike Richie, owner of Richie’s Men’s Wear, said “I’m looking forward to focusing on e-commerce to better serve customers outside the county.” Richie added he is also hoping to expand into more formal wear, including slacks and dress shirts, and also provide tuxedo rentals. Jared Howard, owner of CommUnity Project Discount Store, stated, “This is a year of expansion … We’re pricing more merchandise, and we’re trying to get a bigger building. … We’ve outgrown this space.” In the spring, Howard also expects to hire more employees. Chuck Smith, owner of Affordable Hearing in Rochester, echoed Howard’s sentiments. “I’m looking forward to helping people save more money and hear better as we expand to our new location in Logansport.” Erica Coffing, the new digital marketing director at Fulton County Public Library, said, “I’m looking forward to getting the library’s makers’ space up and running in an exciting new way, and offering workshops to the public.” Lisa Byers, Fulton County Senior Center Activities Director, said she looks forward to “more activities for seniors and more outings. … I’d also like to see more people in here,” she added, explaining attendance has dropped since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. “I’d like to see

people get back in the habit of coming in.” Harry Webb, owner of Webb’s Family Pharmacy, discussed how COVID-19 has affected his business as well. “The unprecedented demand for COVID-19 vaccine to protect our population was primarily delivered by retail pharmacy. The traditional walk-in method for vaccines was not safe or feasible during the pandemic. And most pharmacy’s adapted and now perform ‘appointment based’ immunizations. We will be expanding our appointment based services in 2023 to offer patients many additional services such as testing, health screenings and detailed disease management consultations and more.” Pam Romine became the new owner of Flirt Boutique in downtown Rochester last September. “I’m looking forward to a whole year of owning the store,” she said. “I’m looking forward to good health, happiness and prosperity in the new year — not only for the boutique but for all the people who stop in here as well.” Phil Nicklaus is a longtime member of Fulton County Coon Hunters Club. “My hope is for the Coon Hunters Club to grow.” Nicklaus oversees the club’s turkey shoots. “I love it. It’s the best group of people you’ll meet.” Recently elected Fulton County Sheriff Travis Heishman began his new responsibilities on Jan. 1. “I’m looking forward to the new position, and a safe and healthy 2023.” Rochester Community High School Senior Nikolas Prathaftakis said, “I’m planning on going to college at Purdue University in Fort Wayne.” A musical theater major, he is also looking forward to “whatever opportunity within the arts or other job opportunity comes my way.”
