A GREAT FIRST IMPRESSION ENCOURAGES REPEAT VISITS by julie young, house & home feature writer

Everyone knows first impressions are lasting impressions. It’s true when it comes to curb appeal, and it’s even more accurate once your guests walk through the door. So how can a host make the most of their space so holiday visitors want to come back? It turns out homeowners who put their best foot forward tend to have a few things in common. WELCOME “HOME” Hotel lobbies evoke a warm, welcoming atmosphere for weary travelers looking for rest and your home’s entryway should offer a similar effect. Everything should look efficient, organized and neutral with a few key accessories that pull the whole area together. Consider a few classic picture frames mounted on the wall, a hook for keys, a basket for umbrellas and a large mirror to give the illusion of more space. There are plenty of places in your home to let your eclectic personality shine, but the entry way is not one of them. | Michiana House and Home | November 2021 | 5
THE NOSE KNOWS While the overall look and appearance of your home matters, don’t overlook how it may smell to an outsider. This may require some objectivity that you don’t have so don’t be afraid to get some honest feedback from a neutral third party. Infuse your home with a fresh, uplifting scent such as citrus, vanilla, pine or something seasonal (like fresh baked cookies) to welcome your guests when they arrive.

CUT THE CLUTTER Look, we all have it: a pile of shoes by the door, mail strewn across the kitchen island, an array of old magazines underneath an end table, or more than a few holiday knick-knacks laying around. Now is the time to clear these items from the foyer, extra bathroom or other gathering spaces so your home does not feel small and cramped. Use functional storage to hide the debris so everyone can relax.

IT’S THE THOUGHT THAT COUNTS While no houseguest expects their host to go out of his or her way for them; they don’t want to feel like an imposition either. Anticipate their needs ahead of time. Place fresh towels in your guest bathroom so they know what linens you would like them to use. Supply them with your Internet password so they don’t have to ask for it, stock up on toiletries and sundries just in case they forgot and if possible, install a coffee pot and cups in your guest suite so they can have that first cup before they come down for breakfast. If there are small children or pets involved, don’t forget them when preparing some amenities. It’s a great compliment when guests want to stay in your home for the holidays, so treat them the way you would want to be treated and you can be sure they will want to return again and again! n Photos: Shutterstock.com

How to make the
t s e B use of a
SMALL SPACE
By BethAnne Brink-Cox, House & Home Feature Writer
Shutterstock.com
We’ve all heard of the tiny house movement. Some long to live that way, while others know they could never do such a small space. But tiny space doesn’t mean only those types of houses. Many of us, live in old homes where smaller rooms are the norm, because when the houses were built they were less expensive to heat, and people didn’t have as many household possessions as nowadays. Yet you don’t always want to knock down walls for larger rooms, and in some cases you couldn’t anyway, because of load bearing walls. So what might you do to create more space where there seems to be none?
8 | Michiana House and Home | November 2021 |
Shutterstock.com
You might begin with open shelving, but Debbie Carpenter of Sweet Water Interiors prefers other options, saying “Open shelves so often lead to clutter, which actually makes the room look smaller. But mirrors are good. You could have an entire mirrored wall, with furniture placed against it--a very dramatic statement.” What about double duty spaces? Window seats with storage for blankets or holiday decorations, trunks for offseason clothing while serving as tables, or closets that can go from shelves to hanging rods and back again as desired? Extra leaves for a dining table can be stood against the back wall of a seldom used closet, behind coats or other hanging clothes. One of my best ideas involved a clean garbage can to store sweaters during warmer months, topped with a circle of plywood and a tablecloth. Voila, a lamp table! Carpenter liked all those ideas, and added that hanging things up does a lot to create space where

there isn’t much. “We don’t use our vertical spaces as much as we might, and it can make a difference. I once decorated a bathroom where the cabinets were hung on the walls instead of being on the floor, and with lighting underneath it created a wonderful effect.” You could add a hanging rack for pots and pans in the kitchen, freeing up cabinet space for other things. If you have open shelving, consider baskets that will group similar items to conserve space and still keep the overall look light and appealing. And if your dining room allows, consider moving dishes and other table setting items into that room, using a hutch or china cabinet, leaving your kitchen cabinets available for other items, as well. If you’ve stockpiled extra canned and shelf stable foods during the quarantine period, they don’t have to be stored only in the kitchen; find boxes that you can fill and slide them under the beds! Scale of furniture is, of course, essential, but there are other things to consider. Carpenter said to avoid dark colors and patterns on the walls, which will make your rooms appear smaller, and “keep all window treatments simple, with good under treatments that can be opened for the warmth and brightness of daylight.” And she went on to say an area rug creates a lovely effect, because the surrounding
floor can also make the room look bigger than it would if it were carpeted. Bathrooms might be one of the trickiest rooms, with fixtures solidly in place, so rethink the way you store things like towels; maybe they’ll need less room if you roll them, rather than fold them, creating a fresh, interesting look with no added cost. You can install high shelves above a tub surround for extra toiletries; they’re stored within easy reach and you can use what shelving or cabinets you have for other things such as paper products. You’ll be surprised at the space you can create when you think outside the box! n

Beauford plays under his owner’s Christmas Tree.
Keep your
o g dogsafe this holiday season
By Dani Messick
The holidays are a time for gift-giving, decorations, and the company of friends and family. Pet owners should be aware their annual traditions may not be appreciated by all members of their household. Dogs, in particular, may struggle with many of the changes during the season, nuanced as they may seem for their families. “Many things that you’d bring out for holidays, they haven’t seen before and it seems like a new toy,” said Carolyn Manley, owner of Dogtown Resort of Middlebury. “It’s not anything they were ever taught to ignore. Shutterstock.com Even Christmas stockings, which look beautiful to you, may look like a toy to a dog. Some dogs may pee on Christmas trees, holiday plants like Poinsettias are toxic when consumed and tinsel can cause intestinal distress. Holiday parties you look forward to every year can also be a source of great stress for your pup. 10 | Michiana House and Home | November 2021 |

“If you have a dog in the house, you need to know who’s coming to the party. You need to know if anybody coming has any kind of dog allergy, do they have any fears of dogs, are they going to get angry if there’s dog hair?” said Suzanne Abel, owner of One Dog At A Time. “If you know you’re having people that have a fear of dogs then you really need to have your dog out of the situation. Get them plenty of exercise and lock them in a room somewhere or crate them, whatever the dog is used to, but you have to make sure you’re not putting anybody – whether it’s the people or the dog – you don’t want to put anybody in a situation they can’t handle.” Some folks are afraid of dogs, but also afraid of mentioning it. It is the dog’s home and not theirs, after all. For a dog that’s not attending the party, there is a slew of options. They can stay in a separate room, or a crate, outside or at a kennel. Whatever your plan, make sure your dog is well-prepared for it. Manley suggests, for those using the crating method, making the crate not a punishment place. “It doesn’t have to be a bad thing if very good things happen there, the crate also can become associated with food, or treats, or toys. Every meal, you’ve got the opportunity to reinforce to your dog about getting in the crate.” At One Dog at a Time Rescue, Abel and her staff use crates to house dogs, but also to teach and protect them from each other. “When you have a kennel or a crate the dog is used to, it’s a safe place for them so if the dog ever feels stressed they know they can go to their kennel and that’s their safe place,” Abel explained. Many people keep their dogs outside for holiday parties, which works sometimes, but Manley reminds outside is not an option if the weather is poor, so have a backup plan in place just in case. Kenneling is also an option. Most cities have a location for doggie boarding, and quality varies from basic necessities to Ritz-Carlton-like with price ranges to match. Plan ahead to book early. In order to visit a kennel, dogs must be up-to-date on vaccinations. For those who want their dogs to enjoy the party, too, know the risks and take the necessary precautions. Signs of stress should never be ignored. Cues such as ears laid back, a tail stooped between the legs or heavy panting are signals your dog may be stressed out and at risk. Counter surfing poses its own unique hazards for dogs, especially during the holidays. “It’s hard to have on your menu everything be dog-safe in case somebody drops a plate of food or something so poisoning is another thing you have to worry about,” said Manley. All-in-all professionals don’t recommend allowing your dog to attend holiday par- The temptations of new and fresh holiday foods can be difficult for dogs to withstand. ties, but if you do, train them Photo: www.humanesocietyofmacomb.org well, watch them fervently, and keep an eye out for any cues of stress. n

The Ultimate —
Wine Cellars by BethAnne Brink-Cox, House & Home Feature Writer
CAN FIT A WIDE VARIETY OF SPACES AND BUDGETS
12 | Michiana House and Home | November 2021 |
What do you know about wine cellars? Do you only know them as scary cobwebby places from the movies? Restaurants, maybe? Television? Maybe you’ve pinned a few ideas on Pinterest, looked at some magazines, researched the many sites online. Well, think about what you’d really like to have in your house; after all, these days a wine cellar can be as simple as a refrigerated drawer, a renovated closet or a cabinet. It all depends on your vision and your budget, and you can choose whether you’d repurpose existing space or if you’d build an addition on your home.
Martin Brothers Contracting, of Goshen, knows a thing or two about designing and building wine cellars, as evinced by these beautiful photographs. I asked if there had been more requests for such a project, and owner Jay Kinney said, “Our clients have been spending more time at home, and rethinking how they use their space. Many of these repurposed areas focus on entertainment, such as home theaters, verandas, pool houses and yes, wine cellars.” What is a common size, and where’s the best location likely to be in your home? Jeff Martin, also of Martin Contracting, said he agreed with Kinney. “They are commonly located in the lower level, but they can be on the main level of your home. An average size is probably 10’x12’, but they can be bigger or smaller. It all depends on what the client wants.” I’ve seen some outdoor patios equipped with everything from a grill and sink to a wine fridge, and I wondered if there was such a thing as an outdoor wine cellar. Is that possible, with weather changes, since wine has to be stored at the proper temperatures at all times? Kinney said, “Our clients are getting outside more. Renovating outdoor areas or incorporating significant outdoor entertainment in new homes is something we are seeing more of.” But if you only know wine cellars from movies and so on, you might wonder just what’s required to create one. What is an absolute must for a home cellar, and what is a luxury? Kinney said an essential home cellar needs “adequate storage, access, and temperature control.” If you want a luxury experience, he said, “Accent lighting, hard surface countertops and high-end custom cabinetry is common these days.” Your wine cellar doesn’t have to be only about storage, though. Paging through avail-
able information, you might see things such as dazzling overhead or recessed lighting, and displayed collections of stemware and decanters. Artwork or sports memorabilia on the walls could give you a sports bar ambiance. How about a seating area? Some of the available designs can incorporate brick walls and stone floors, resembling old taverns. Other designs can look like living rooms with cozy chairs and even fireplaces. (Definitely not the stuff of old Vincent Price movies!) Don’t forget something fun to do with the corks-- write the date on each, and fill glass jars with them, or place them in a wall frame. As every contractor knows, building materials are harder to come by now, shipping can be slower and prices can be higher. Assuming you had everything in place and ready to begin, how long could such a project take to complete? Kinney said “That question is hard to answer since every client makes decisions at a different pace. The work itself may only take
8-10 weeks, but the planning and material lead times could take 3-6 months.” And it’s tempting to think a renovation of existing space would take a much shorter time, but that’s not necessarily true. Wiring could need to be added or updated, cooling systems can require water and ductwork run into rooms that never required them before. Whatever you decide to do, the holiday season is fast approaching, and this might be the gift you’ve always wanted. Treat yourself! n

String Bean Casserole
t r o f m o C Food
s t h g i n d l o c e s o h t for
Below are two recipes my mom, Kathie Zeugner, makes often. String bean casserole is one of my dad’s favorites, especially when the weather is cold and damp. It was also one of the few meals where the casserole dish came to the table, placed on a trivet and dad served it to everyone since the dish and the food was extremely hot from being in the oven. The brownie recipe will satisfy any chocolate lover and is a favorite with friends and family alike.
This is my mother’s version of Shepherd’s Pie. It’s great on a cold night. Feel fee to substitute other veggies for the string beans. I’ve thrown in mushrooms and frozen peas and carrots on occasion when I don’t have string beans in the house. Preheat oven to 375° F Cook 4-5 medium potatoes and make mashed potatoes. Set aside Saute one medium onion and 1 pound ground beef until beef is done. Season with salt, pepper and italian seasoning. While cooking onion and beef, boil one pound of green beans that have been trimmed until just done. Frozen green beans can be substituted here. To the meat mixture add one can of tomato soup and drained string beans. Stir to combine all ingredients. If the mixture is too thick, thin it out a bit with some water. Transfer the meat and string bean mixture to a casserole dish. Top with the mashed potatoes- spread over the top. Feel fee to grate your favorite cheese on top of the potatoes. Mom always uses Parmesan. Bake about 30 minutes until the potatoes start to brown and the liquid is bubbly.

5 Ways to Prepare Your Home for Winter (StatePoint) It’s that time of year: pumpkin
spice is here and so are shorter days and cooler nights. Before nightfall comes too early, take advantage of the milder temps to prepare your home for winter. Here are a few easy, DIY tasks to check off your list. Secure Loose Shingles and Fix Broken Gutters Assess your roof and gutters to ensure your home is safe from water damage and leaks this winter. If you suspect or discover a problem, even a small one, don’t wait to fix it. It will be even more difficult to repair after the roof has become snowy and icy.
Close Up the Patio It’s important to protect patio items from winter wear and tear so you can enjoy them as soon as the weather breaks in the spring. When the weather in your area seems to be changing for good, clean outdoor furniture like tables, chairs and décor and protect them with a heavy-duty cover. If you don’t have interior storage, secure everything tightly so you don’t risk items tipping during a gusty winter storm. Clean the grill, remove and store the tank, and winterize outdoor hoses and faucets. Easy-to-install faucet covers can help prevent water damage and freezing pipes. Also, don’t forget to plant your bulbs now so you’ll have flowers to welcome you when the warm weather hits. 16 | Michiana House and Home | November 2021 |
Keep Cold Weather Out Frigid temperatures draw attention to drafts coming into your home. While turning up the furnace helps, the constant escape of warm air leads to high heating costs. Seal cracks and gaps around windows and doors wisely. Many seals tend to freeze and crack, never really fixing the problem. However, Duck Brand Heavy-Duty Weatherstrip Seals are made with a durable, flexible material, creating a barrier against cold air throughout the winter. When spring arrives, the strip will work against dust, pollen and insects throughout the warmer months.
If it’s not within budget, try a DIY fix with supplies you likely already have in your toolbox. The Original Duck Tape Brand Duct Tape is a classic tool for temporary repairs and is great for holding, seaming and sealing coverings over problematic areas until you can later fix the issue at hand.
Prep A/C Units Don’t overlook keeping your A/C unit clean. Most modern units are created to withstand extreme elements; however, keeping it free of buildup is key to maintaining it over time. When it’s not in use over winter, clean the surfaces on and around the unit to keep it free from buildup of dander, leaves, acorns and pine needles. Next, using an air conditioner cover, securely protect your A/C unit from snow and ice, so that it’s still in its best working condition when you uncover it in the spring.
Clean Windows Prepare your home for short gloomy days and long nights by giving windows and blinds a deep clean. When these surfaces are clean, natural light can pour in during the day, helping combat winter blues. A little extra effort this fall can make your home more enjoyable all winter long.
