editor’s note...
Wow! It’s March and A LOT has been going on here at Michiana House and Home. First, it’s home show season. Whether you are looking for some inspiration to update a room, looking for a contractor for a job or just looking for an excuse to get out of the house, be sure to check out the upcoming home shows in South Bend, Warsaw and Plymouth. Hopefully, I’ll have an opportunity to meet some of you at one of the shows. Admission to Michiana Home Show in South Bend is $6.00 with those 12 and under free. For the two BANCI shows in Warsaw and Plymouth, the admission is free. All the shows will have lots of vendors covering a whole host of products and services for your home. Michiana House and Home has partnered with the Michiana Master Gardeners Association, part of the Purdue Extension Elkhart County’s Master Gardeners program. Five master gardeners have volunteered to write the garden column for MHH. They are so excited to share their expertise on a wide range of topics throughout the next few months. I’m excited to share their columns with you and learn something along the way. We were finalizing plans and looking to have the Master Gardeners start writing the garden column in April when Master Gardener Dan Carlson took on the challenge of having an article ready for the March issue- he did it within 5 days and wrote about the Michiana Master Gardeners Answer Line. On the home front, I’ve taken another car load to the recycling center.
It is amazing how much cardboard and paper that can accumulate. Thankfully sorting all the boxes I’ve collected over the last few months did not take as long as I thought. And there is more space in the basement store room, which is nice. In addition to some more storage space, I have three empty storage boxes should I need them in the future. And yes Turquoise supervised the decluttering of the basement. I’m still looking for new faucets for the kitchen and bathroom. I’ll be honest, I’m a bit surprised at how expensive a faucet can be. Plain jane type faucets aren’t so bad, but once you look for a bit of design flair, the price definitely goes up. So I’m reconsidering budget and doing my research. Next on the to do list is getting a water softener. Unfortunately my water is so hard, the lime scale tends to gum up the plumbing for the faucet pretty quickly. Once again, I’m sharing a recipe from Ina Garten, the Barefoot Contessa, this one for her chocolate and pecan scones. As someone who loves to bake and who believes the base of the food pyramid should be made up of chocolate- these are awesome. Until next month, Happy Spring!

Rest in Peace today’s bedroom trends are simple and crisp
Shutterstock.com
By Julie Young, House and Home Feature Writer
If you are looking to give your bedroom an upgrade this year, designers say less is more. The top bedroom trends will not only give you a good night’s sleep, but will help you wake up rested, refreshed, and ready to start the day with intention. This year, there is a greater focus on natural colors and calming elements, installing smart technologies and other appliances into your in-home oasis, as well as curated collections and stylish storage solutions to help you declutter and have the space you need to live and grow! | Michiana House and Home | March 2022 | 5
NATURE’S OWN Biophilia is not only an interior design trend for 2022, but for many it is also a way of life. Officially defined as “the innate human instinct to connect with nature and other living things,” biophilia is a fancy term for bringing the outside in. Generally, this is done by maximizing natural light, including foliage and nature inspired artwork and using natural materials in rooms to promote wellness, rest and productivity. “The biggest trend in bedroom color right now is echoing colors that are found in nature,” said Kelly Avila of Yourspace Design. “Grey is out, beige is back and shades of green, blue and brown are taking center stage along with earthy tones like rust, blush and terra cotta. Color is big in bedrooms right now. I’m not seeing a lot of white walls.” Color is big, but it tends to be more neutral with little splashes here and there. However, when it comes to bedroom décor,
6 | Michiana House and Home | March 2022 |
Avila says texture is everything. Monochromatic bedrooms that feature the same color wall paint, bedding and finishes are utilizing texture in walls with paneling and other wood detailing, headboards, accent chairs and benches are covered in soft luxurious materials while the wall hangings are more organic and textile. “The idea is that opening your bedroom door should envelope you in dramatic color that both relaxes, warms you and leaves you feeling cozy,” she said. “It’s a great time to do a bedroom remodel.”
TECH TIPS Chris Doncaster with Doncaster Flooring and Design says today’s bedroom is natural, minimalist, clean and crisp. The simpler the better whether that is your color scheme or the technology you install. While there is an uptick in the number of kitchenettes, she is installing in master suites that feature a coffee maker and refrigerator, by and large homeowners are forgoing some of the must haves that were big only a few years ago. She sees homeowners opt out of carpets in favor of vinyl planking or hardwood floors and are using decorative baskets to
help store items out of the way. Even furnishings such as dressers and chests are going by the wayside in favor of larger walk-in closets and wall-mounted/mirror-mounted TVs. “This generation is very tech savvy, and they are including sound and lighting elements that can all be controlled via Alexa,” she said. “You don’t have to give up fashion for function, but the idea is to keep everything simple.” n

5 Ways to
Spring Clean YOUR ROUTINE
(StatePoint) Falling short of your goals? In a period of stagnation? It may be time to spring clean your routine. Here are a few tips and ideas for getting more done with greater ease.
Thank you...
to the public and our vendors for making the 2022 Home & Outdoor Expo a great success! Sponsored by
Presented by
ElkhartHomeExpo.com
1. SPRUCE UP YOUR SETTINGS Do you find some of the push notifications on your phone distracting? Give yourself the gift of fewer beeps and buzzes by spending just a few minutes reviewing and changing the notification settings of your apps.
2. SQUEEZE IN SELF-CARE Taking regular breaks from your work is essential. Not only are these interludes good for your mind and body, they can actually help you be more creative and productive. However, if you’re someone who loses track of time easily when you’re concentrating, you may need a tool to remind you to step away from your workstation. That’s where a watch like those in the G-Shock lineup can be of assistance. Equipped with multi-function alarms, a step tracker and a heart rate monitor, you may just be motivated to use your break to take a brisk walk.

3. REDUCE MEALTIME STRESS
Therma Tru Entry Doors
If weeknight dinners are rushed and chaotic but you don’t want to resort to takeout more than once or twice a week, try subscribing to a meal kit service that delivers all the ingredients and instructions you need to create delicious and wholesome home-cooked meals. The good news is that many such services have ever-changing menus, as well as flexible options for those who are on special diets. These kits can also be a good way for kitchen novices to master basic culinary skills before embarking on more complicated efforts.
4. STAY FOCUSED Everyone is overscheduled these days. Having tech tools handy that keep you task-oriented can help ensure you never miss an important meeting or appointment. Those who embrace classic styles should consider Casio Edifice watches. Particularly suitable for those who frequently travel or work with others in different time zones, the watch displays the time of cities all around the world. And because the watches are water-resistant and in many cases, solar-powered, it’s a timepiece you can rely on.

5. WRITE IT DOWN On the first of each month, take a few moments to jot down any goals you have for the month ahead, as well as any habits you want to start or stop. Take time to note how you are planning to fulfill your objectives. At the end of the month, review what worked and what didn’t. Getting out of a rut can be as simple as making a few tweaks to your routine. Lean on tools and strategies designed to help. n

i r e P Very is Pantone’s Color of the Year By Dani Messick, House and Home Feature Writer
A versatile periwinkle blue with violet-red undertones is the color on the scene this year. The Pantone Color Institute announced its Pantone Color of the Year known as “Very Peri,” and it’s anything but ordinary. It’s a periwinkle shade they say blends the faithfulness and constancy of blue with the energy and excitement of red. “We are living in transformative times,” the company’s press release says. “PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri is a symbol of the global zeitgeist of the moment and the transition we are going through. As we emerge from an intense period of isolation, our notions and standards are changing, and our physical and digital lives have merged in new ways. Digital design Shutterstock.com helps us to stretch the limits of reality, opening the door to a dynamic virtual world where we can explore and create new color possibilities. With trends in gaming, the expanding popularity of the metaverse and rising artistic community in the digital space PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri illustrates the fusion of modern life and how color trends in the digital world are being manifested in the physical world and vice versa.” The company says the color feels futuristic, while also retaining the classical memory of traditional blue tones. “Very Peri is an enthusiastic blue hue whose whimsicality lends itself to unpredictable color harmonies and spontaneous color statements,” the press release said. “Due to the unique attributes of the color, it takes on a distinct appearance depending on the material it’s applied 8 | Michiana House and Home | March 2022 |
to, from metallics to natural fibers. It makes a statement when used in shimmery eye shadows as well as in homes, where it can be used to make one-of-a-kind color combos. As implied, the color actually looks different depending on the medium on which it’s used. For a futuristic look, try metal medium. For trendy vintage look, consider using it on wood furniture. The possibilities are almost endless. Very Peri pairs well with white, beige, pink, and green. It can also be paired with orange or yellow if you’re bold enough. Beware, though, that Very Peri’s tint changes depending on the lighting- a feature of it’s unique color-coding. Thanks to its red undertones, Very Peri can achieve a yellowish tinge under warm lighting so plan accordingly. In homes and clothing, the way to use it as accents and accessories. A lamp, candles, or even necklaces are all options. If you’re looking for bolder representation, an accent wall or even a piece of statement furniture in Very Peri is sure to be the envy of the year’s design aficionados. Introduce the color for temporary usage this year with bedspreads, curtains, and rugs. The color is available to software designers and multimedia through www.pantone.com/ connect. Pantone specializes in the language of
color - that is, they work to develop color consistency across all platforms for graphics, fashion and product design. The Pantone Color Institute provides customized color standards, brand identity, color consulting and trend forecasting. To determine the color of the year, Pantone’s color experts use various methods to determine trends. They look at the entertainment industry, films in production, traveling art collections, up-and-coming artists, fashion, design, travel, lifestyle and socio-economic conditions. They also reference new technologies, materials, textures, and effects impacting color, as well as social media and even sporting events. “The Pantone Color of the Year reflects what is taking place in our global culture, expressing what people are looking for that color can hope to answer,” said Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute. “Creating a new color for the first time in the history of our Pantone Color of the Year educational color program reflects the global innovation and transformation taking place. As society continues to recognize color as a critical form of communication and as a way to express and affect ideas and emotions and engage and connect, the complexity of this new red-violet-infused blue hue highlights the expansive possibilities that lie before us.” Very Peri will be added into the Pantone Fashion, Home + Interiors Color System, the most widely used and recognized color standards system for fashion, textile, home and interior design. WARSAW By BethAnne Brink-Cox, House and Home Feature Writer
There is something about spring that leads to thoughts of cleaning up and new beginnings, which often includes renovations, additions to or even completely building your own home. If you’re in that mindset there are so many ways to begin–not just magazines and on-line information, but home shows. They’re everywhere in your town and surrounding others, too. In 1978, the Builders Association of Kosciusko and Fulton County was established. It has been having annual Home Shows since 1990, in various locations. In January 2021 the name was changed to Builders Association North Central Indiana as the Marshall County Builders joined the association. BANCI is holding its annual Spring Home Show in Warsaw March 25-27, in what is now its permanent location–the Tiger Recreational Activity Center at Warsaw Community High School. Kim McKibbin, executive director of BANCI said the attendance was down during 2021 because of the pandemic restrictions, “But for the 2022 Home Show we are having a great vendor turnout, and there are no restrictions planned for this year.” She’s not kidding about that turnout. There are 48 vendors who will be present for the show, not least of which is Kosciusko Connect, LLC, and Cottage Watchman Security Systems, both of whom are major show sponsors. There are many others, covering everything from interiors and exteriors, to furnishings, heating/cooling, and water systems. McKibbin said there will be free educational seminars this year– vendors can offer one hour sessions to highlight their products and services. There will be other attractions, too – former WSBT-TV weatherman Matt Rudkin will be
there, and there will be a helicopter on display, definitely something for everyone! You don’t want to wander around such a large location if you’re hungry and/or thirsty, and you won’t have to. There will be concession stands open. Look especially for Igloo Ice Cream and Toasted Roast if you like gourmet coffee. McKibbin said there will also be a drawing for a $100 Visa gift card.
The Home and Outdoor Show will give you plenty of opportunity to shop for professionals, who will answer your questions about any project you’re considering. If you’re a do-it-yourselfer, this is a great way to ask for opinions and other expertise about whatever you’re thinking to do, so you’re more comfortable with your own capabilities and will know you have all the right materials needed. Be sure you look for the BANCI logo on the different booths; those are professionals you know you can trust. There is just one show each year, so plan to attend at some point during these three dates/times: Noon to 7 p.m. Friday, March 25; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, March 26; or noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 27. This year there is no admission fee to attend the home show. So what are you thinking of doing to your home? Big project? Small? Working on an on going one? You might even get some inspiration for projects you never thought of, creating a working space out of a closet or hallway formerly underused. You might redesign your existing closets from all hanging space to all shelving. Or you might be perfectly satisfied with all things interior and want to consider a new look to the exterior of your home. It’s great to know that under one roof you’ll find all the things you’d need to do whatever you choose to do, as well as the experts who know how to make plans a reality. n
Rudkin to present at BANCI Warsaw show March 26 Matt Rudkin is no stranger to the area. Raised in Warsaw and living near South Bend, his roots and experience make him the most trusted name in local weather. Rudkin graduated from Warsaw Community High School in 2006. He went to Purdue University and was awarded a degree in Atmospheric Science, eventually landing a job at WSBT-TV in South Bend. Rudkin was promoted to chief meteorologist shortly after, anchoring local newscasts for nearly a decade. Last summer, Rudkin’s career took a new direction. In an effort to focus on the ever-growing digital audience, he left WSBT and launched his own company, “Matt Rudkin Weather,” which has exploded into the area’s exclusive source for digital-only local weather information. His digital-only focus offers a unique advantage compared to traditional broadcast media by being available 24 hours a day, 7 day a week. In addition to focusing on weather forecasting, Rudkin works at United Airlines in the Domestic Network Planning group, helping develop the airline’s routes & schedules. You can find Rudkin on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. His weather app, “Matt Rudkin Weather,” will be available to download this spring.

Building a new home is an exciting opportunity to create something from the ground up. However, finding that perfect piece of land is easier said than done. While location remains the primary consideration when choosing your property, there are plenty of other things to keep in mind before breaking ground. GO WITH A PRO If you are planning to build a home soon, it is important to work with a real estate agent who specializes in helping folks find the perfect property that will meet their needs. These professionals not only have a list of available lots, but they also understand the nuances that come with a custom build. No matter if you are building your first home, have a family, or are an empty nester, your real estate professional will be able to help guide you no matter if you want to put down roots in a rural space or wish to build in an established community. They will have details on area school ratings, the local amenities and how the homes in the area hold their value over 14 | Michiana House and Home | March 2022 |
time. Neighborhoods change and this information will be invaluable when it comes to planning your build AND when you put that dream home on the market years from now.
THE “S” FACTOR There are four S’s that determine how easy or hard it will be to build a house and how much it will cost in the end. Your dream home can turn into a nightmare if you do not consider the slope, sun, soil, and sewer system associated with the property and the impact it will have on the final product. Houses that are built on hills offer plenty of creative freedom in terms of layout and design (such as a walk-out basement,) but they also
require more structural support. The sun’s position throughout the day will have an impact as to how you will situate your home on the lot. Do you want the sun streaming into your master suite early in the morning? Do you want dinner guests blinded by a scorching late-August sunset? Careful placement of your home will determine whether your property will feel like paradise or purgatory. Soil varies from property to property, but experts say difficult soil leads to difficult drainage issues. What may seem perfect on the surface can change radically a few feet below, so make sure you work with a builder who is experienced in all types of soil conditions. Another consideration is the kind of sewer line that is on your home and what your sewage needs will be as you build. The depth of your sewer line can also make impact on the kind of basement you can have because everything must float downhill from your home. By working with experienced professionals who can give you the lay of the land, you can feel confident that your build will be beautiful and give you plenty of enjoyment for years to come! n

By Dani Messick, House and Home Feature Writer
Over 100 exhibitors will be showing their latest products and trends in home design at this year’s Michiana Home Show. The event takes place March 11-13 at the Century Center in South Bend. President of Group 2 Promotions Mel Wood — the organizer of the event — says the majority of the contractors at the show are local working, within 40 miles of the show.
“That’s important now because it’s so hard to find contractors, so many of them don’t have the labor pool to draw from to complete jobs and the folks who are exhibiting at the home show do have that ability and they’re out there looking for new work all the time,” he said. Renovations remain a popular project among homeowners and kitchen and bathroom exhibitions tend to be the most popularly visited sites at the Michiana Home Show. “The most popular thing is the kitchen 16 | Michiana House and Home | March 2022 |
remodels,” said Wood. “It always has been the most important room in the house. That’s where most everybody lives.” Still, other types of renovations are growing in popularity, thanks to people spending more time at home in recent years due to the ongoing pandemic. “Kitchens and bathrooms are always the most popular renovations but here in the past two years, home offices are getting big, and home entertainment areas [like] theatres and
TVs have become more popular too.” Solar products will also be on exhibit at the show, a technology Wood says is becoming very popular. “There are a lot of new solar products out. There’s a new product out, it’s a solar backup. It stores power in a battery bank during the day and you can use that power at night or during the day,” he raved. With over 100 exhibitors already scheduled to attend the event, the Michiana Home Show is expected to draw quite a crowd. “It’s a [time] for the public to come to see different suppliers or different contractors for a project that they might have in the works,” Wood explained. “Instead of having to make appointments with several companies and go to different stores, they can come to the [Michiana Home Show] and in one visit see people who offer products or services that they’re interested in and get questions answered right away. Then if they want to, they can get those companies to come out and give them an actual estimate.” The Michiana Home Show is scheduled from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. Friday, March 11, from 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. Saturday, March 12, and from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 13, at the Century Center, located at 120 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr., South Bend. Admission is $6.00, 12 and under are free. There are over 800 free parking spaces available within two blocks of the Century Center but on-site parking is available for $5. Over the years, I’ve tried several scone recipes. I found them a bit complicated because they usually required freezing butter and either grating it or dicing it into the dough. I saw Ina Garten make this recipe on her show “Barefoot Contessa” and decided to try it. First it had chocolate- always a win with me. And it didn’t seem that complicated. Enjoy these for breakfast or a snack with a warm cup of tea.
Chocolate Pecan Scones Makes 14-16 large scones Ingredients: • 3 tablespoons plus 4 cups all-purpose flour, divided • 1½ cups medium-diced bittersweet chocolate, such as Lindt (8 ounces) • 1 cup chopped pecans • 2 tablespoons sugar, plus additional for sprinkling • 2 tablespoons baking powder • 4 teaspoons kosher salt • ¾ pound cold unsalted butter, ½-inch diced • 1 cup cold heavy cream • 4 extra-large eggs, lightly beaten • 1 egg beaten with 2 tablespoons water or cream, for egg wash Shutterstock.com
18 | Michiana House and Home | March 2022 |
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Arrange two racks evenly spaced in the oven. Line two sheet pans with parchment paper. In a small bowl, combine the 3 tablespoons flour with the chocolate and pecans and set aside. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, combine the 4 cups flour, the sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add the butter and, with the mixer on low speed, blend until the butter is the size of peas. Measure the cream in a 2-cup glass measuring cup, add the eggs, and beat until combined. With the mixer still on low, pour the wet mixture into the dry mixture and combine just until blended. Add the chocolate and pecan mixture and mix just until combined. The dough will be very sticky.
Dump the dough out onto a very wellfloured surface and knead it a few times to be sure the chocolate and pecans are well distributed, adding a little flour so the dough doesn’t stick to the board. Flour your hands and a rolling pin and roll the dough ¾ to 1 inch thick. You should see lumps of butter in the dough. Cut the dough with a 3-inch plain round cutter and place the scones on the prepared sheet pans. Re-roll the scraps and cut out more scones. Brush the tops with the egg wash, sprinkle with sugar, and bake for 20 minutes, switching the pans halfway through, until the tops are lightly browned and the insides are fully baked. Serve warm or at room temperature. n Copyright 2018, Cook Like a Pro, Clarkson Potter/Publishers, All Rights Reserved

APRIL 2-3
By BethAnne Brink-Cox, House and Home Feature Writer
In 1978, the Builders Association of Kosciusko and Fulton County was established, with annual Home Shows since 1990, in various locations. In January 2021 the name was changed to Builders Association North Central Indiana when the Marshall County Builders joined the association. You’ll find that logo on the booths of the vendors displaying there, a guarantee of quality and integrity. So if you aren’t able to attend the BANCI Home Show in Warsaw, March 25-27, you have an equally good opportunity in April to attend a second BANCI Home Show in Plymouth. If you’ve never attended a home show, you might wonder what’s in it for you. Well, it’s a great way to see this year’s new products and experts offering just about any service you could require when it comes to your home. You can ask all the questions you need and compare products, prices and services. If you still need more help determining exactly how to go about making those paper plans become reality, this year there will be free seminars offered–hour-long sessions by the vendors in which there will be demonstrations as well as question and answer periods. Bin There, Dump That is the major sponsor for this show, and Cottage Watchman Security
20 | Michiana House and Home | March 2022 |
Systems is another generous sponsor, so be sure to stop by their booths. There are many others you’ll like–check out Colorbilt Paint, and ask them to show you a sample of the SherwinWilliams Color of the Year for 2022. It’s called Evergreen Fog, and it’s beautiful! There will be things you’d expect, like countertops, gutters, windows ; and things you might not think to see–Interra Credit Union, well, you might want to do some on the spot financing, and Surf Broadband! And there will be things to see outdoors, too–a display of lawn equipment, because you’ll be mowing the lawn again before you know it, and heavy equipment for the larger tasks.
Kim McKibbin, executive director of BANCI, said the pandemic restrictions resulted in smaller than usual numbers for last year’s Home Shows, but that’s not expected to be an issue this year. Vendor numbers are high, and there are all kinds of food and other refreshment stands to keep you fed and hydrated, so you can browse longer. McKibbin said there will be many prizes and giveaways to register for; you might be the lucky one. You’ll also be offered special pricing on certain items and services, just for attending, and that always makes it easier to finalize a decision. The show will take place at the Zone Sports Complex 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, April 2 and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday April 3. This year there is no admission to attend the Home and Outdoor Show. Plan to attend, and then you can go home with a fresh eye as to windows, cabinets, furniture, lawnmowers; the list is endless. There’s nothing like something freshly refurbished to lift your spirits and welcome Spring. What’ll it be? Something you’ve always wanted? Or something you never even knew you wanted, until you saw it at the Home Show? Have fun choosing. After all, this Show occurs just once a year, and you can imagine how hard everyone has worked to bring you every possible wish! n

The Master Gardener Answer Line By Dan Carlson, Master Gardener
Answer Line Non-commercial gardeners and home owners can submit their gardening questions and concerns in Elkhart County and nearby areas.

As you garden through the spring, summer and fall, issues can and will arise. Maybe your pride and joy maple tree is not leafing out. What is this strange looking bug that is eating your tomato plants? There are many blooms on your zucchini plants, but you are not getting any fruit. Why do you have these brown spots in your lawn? How much fertilizer should you use and what type is best for your begonias? Who do you call….the Master Gardener Answer Line! The Master Gardener Answer Line is a free service sponsored by the Elkhart County Purdue Extension Office. To be a Master Gardener you have to complete 40 hours of classroom horticultural training and complete 40 hours of volunteer horticultural service. Each year Master Gardeners must maintain their status with additional training and volunteer service, a minimum of six and twelve hours each respectfully. Several of these Master Gardeners volunteer to work on the Answer Line. They accept questions and concerns from non-commercial gardeners and home owners in Elkhart County and nearby areas. Inquiries can be submitted through the Elkhart County Purdue Extension Office. Inquiries may be submitted April through September. Submissions may be made via phone (574) 533-0554, email, Elkhart.mg@gmail.com or personal visit to the office at 17746 CR 34, Suite E, Goshen, IN 46528, Gate 2 of the Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds. If possible, it is very helpful if photos or samples can be submitted with the inquiry. The submission must have the contact information of the person making the inquiry. Inquiries may be submitted on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. The office staff will forward the inquiry to the Master Gardener who has volunteered for that period of time. The Master Gardener reviews the inquiry, most likely contacting the client to discuss the issue and to request any needed information, photos or samples. Once researched, the Master Gardener responds with a diagnosis and possible remedies. The volunteers on the Answer Line share information as the growing season progresses. Almost every issue raised becomes a learning experience for the Master Gardeners. Often, an issue that arises in one garden will appear in other gardens. Some concerns may reappear every year in different places. In working with clients, an Answer Line Master Gardener may be the first to encounter a new issue in the county. That information is passed on to the Extension Office for possible further action. If you see something new or unexpected, contact the Answer Line. Many of the Master Gardeners also belong to the Michiana Master Gardeners Association. The MMGA works with the Extension Office in providing other opportunities for gardeners of Elkhart County. MMGA sponsors an Annual Garden Walk, an Annual Garden Expo, and helps with the tree sale in partnership with the Elkhart County Soil and Water Conservation District. Upon request, a Master Gardener can also make a gardening presentation to organizations. n

The weather is turning warmer; the white snow is yielding to tiny flowers and greening grass. It seems each day brings more seed and plant catalogs. Community Gardens OFFER SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE
By BethAnne Brink-Cox, House and Home Feature Writer
When it seems like winter will never end, paging through seed catalogs and planning a garden is a marvelous way to bring spring a little closer and a little sooner. No one knows that better than Seed to Feed, a program of Church Community Services in Elkhart County. Its mission is to establish food security by providing fresh, local produce to those in need, and they work alongside the organization’s food pantry to achieve this. Gabby Parrish, Seed to Feed director, said the program began in 2011 with two gardens and two cash crop fields. These days, there are three kinds of gardens: Production Gardens, which create garden plans for growing produce that will be given to food pantries in Elkhart County; Community Learning Gardens, which create garden plans for educating the community in the art of growing produce for healthy eating, while donating excess crops to Seed to Feed; and Partner Gardens, a separate entity which develops garden plans and provides its own resources for gardening, while still donating excess food to Seed to Feed. There is also a 30 by 100 foot greenhouse now. Threequarters of this space is used to grow produce year ‘round; at this time of year it’s cool weather crops, such as spinach and lettuce, 26 | Michiana House and Home | March 2022 |
with no artificial lighting. For later seasons there is a big focus on crops such as tomatoes and “Beans! We can never get enough beans!” Parrish said. The other quarter of space is used to grow plants that will be set out at the proper time–as many as 20,000 plants will be needed. Parrish said the greenhouse is next door to one of their non-profit pantries, which serves an average of 2,500 clients/families every month. “We have walk-in coolers and freezers now, so we can store what is raised
and increase our ability to provide fresh locally grown produce. Fresh vegetables are often out of reach for low and fixed income families, and we wanted to change that. I think it’s great that many farmers markets now accept WIC cards and other supplemental income to make fresh vegetables easier to attain,” said Parrish. “Last year we raised 34,000 pounds of fresh produce for our pantries and food banks, and it is our core group of volunteers and teen interns who do the biggest share of the gardening and harvesting!”
There are also learning/sharing gardens that are planted where people can pick what they need in exchange for helping to weed and otherwise care for the gardens. This is reminiscent of the WWII Victory Gardens, meant to reduce pressure on public food supply. They were considered civil morale boosters, helping gardeners to feel empowered by their own contributions of labor and rewarded by the produce grown. Parrish said there are internships offered three times a year–spring, summer and fall, with the new spring season starting Feb. 28. Teens 15-18 can apply for these positions on the website (seedtofeed@churchcommunityservices.org) No matter what the interns go on to do, they’ll learn the skills of sustainable gardening, living, and healthy eating. “The interns learn composting and self sustained gardening, and they grow all the plants in the greenhouse for the gardens. Several times during each 12 week growing period, the Purdue Extension Teen Cuisine Program comes in and teaches the interns how to prepare a meal from what we currently have available, and then that’s their dinner: we provide a meal each day they work, but spinach enchiladas they have made themselves really captivates them,” said Parrish. The summer session has not been set yet. Interested teens can apply for the spring session, there are still slots available or for the fall. These are paid internships. The teens will have a smaller plot to grow a production style garden, and their produce will go to the Elkhart Farmers Market in the summer. There are a couple of plotted gardens available for a small fee, for those wanting their own garden, but everyone is encouraged to come to the gardens where they can pick whatever they need. “Our average volunteers are retirees,” said Parrish, “people who love to garden, but maybe can’t take on the entire work of it anymore. We have 300 volunteers from Seed to Feed and other non-profit organizations. I mean, the gardens are planted and harvested weekly!” Parris said the program is partnered with Elkhart County Schools, and it also received support from some specific teachers at Ivy Tech. She said there is also lots of help and support available for those wanting to start their own gardens, from helping plot the best crops for the soil and light available to giving people seeds and starts. “There’s nothing like sitting down to a salad you raised yourself,” she said. n

According to Google, New York City has one of the oldest St. Patrick’s Day parades, having started in 1762, but also one of the largest. It is almost 6 hours long with more than 2 million attendees and 100,000 participants.
St. Patrick’s Day commemorates St. Patrick bringing Christianity to Ireland and celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish. Celebrations generally involve parades, festivals and the wearing of green clothing or shamrocks.

Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley wanted to find who was polluting the Chicago River in 1961 so he authorized special green dye to be poured into a portion of the river. This project gave Stephen Bailey, a friend of Daley’s, and the city’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade chairman- had the bright idea of turning the entire river green using orange powder that is a secret formula. n
