Deck out your yard
with an exciting space to gather By Kathleen Moran, House and Home Writer
Graduation parties, Fourth of July celebrations and cookouts are some great opportunities to partake in outdoor gatherings. One thing every homeowner should contemplate when hosting an outdoor function, though, is the option for guests to eat and socialize in an area that affords guests with shade as the hot temperatures continue. Another consideration is lighting, especially if an event starts in the evening.

One structure that quickly comes to mind in terms of offering shade is the pergola. According to Don Wantuch, a sales representative with Big C Lumber, “Building one is generally a two-person job with one individual drilling holes and the other set of hands working to steady and fasten the beams.” A wooden structure like a pergola should set for at least one or two seasons or, depending on the time of its building, a minimum of six months so that it can dry out, he explained. For instance, if a homeowner builds a pergola in the fall, it is ideal to wait until the spring before sealing, painting or staining.
| Michiana House and Home | July 2021 | 5
“Gazebos are another option in addition to the pergola and can be attached almost anywhere, like an existing deck or directly onto a home.” Just keep in mind the importance of checking with the local building department when attaching one structure to another. Overall, it is important for homeowners to carefully think through the planning and building of a pergola or gazebo because they are fairly permanent structures. As Wantuch explained, “They will not be taken down between seasons, meaning a certain amount of yard space will continually be occupied by the structures.” Guests wishing to congregate on a porch rather than venture out into a yard can take advantage of solar screens. Chuck Mayer, owner of Budget Blinds in Granger, explained that “these screens inhibit UV rays, which goes a long way in preventing discoloration.” Additionally, these screens are durable and meant to withstand the elements.

“Screens with hard-wired wind sensors, called anemometers, can be adapted for use in gazebos, too.” Freestanding gazebos, such as those built in the middle of one’s yard, can have screens that damage easily when caught in the wind. “Thus, the neat thing about an anemometer is that it can measure the wind velocity and automatically roll the screens up when a certain wind velocity is reached,” stated Mayer. This is meant to protect the screens from damage and ensure their long-term function. Hannah Taylor, lighting showroom manager at Kendall Lighting Center in South Bend, suggested “building hardscape and/or landscape lighting into the posts of a pergola or deck.” She made the additional recommendation to adorn a pergola with string lighting. “One can really have fun with the lighting in a gazebo, too, by including an outdoor chandelier that is wet rated in order to withstand the elements, which is particularly important in a gazebo that is more exposed.” The benefit of such lighting options is that guests can stay outdoors without feeling forced to retire indoors at night. n

C S R , O s t O D h Lig JOY A MOVIE OUT EN
By Kathleen Moran, House and Home Writer
A home outdoor movie night is the perfect opportunity for quality family time all while enjoying some fresh air. In actuality, it is a lot easier than one might think to create the ideal movie experience with these suggestions below … so sit back, relax and enjoy!
Brian Hollars, a sales representative with ABC Warehouse in Elkhart, described the flexibility of using a projector for an outdoor movie night. For instance, “A 1080 pixel projector with Bluetooth audio capabilities would enable a family to watch their favorite movie outdoors,” whether the movie is projected on a screen or the side of one’s home. It has an HDMI output so that it can be hooked up to a computer or DVD player, he said. Simply set the projector on a table or hang it on a deck. “Homeowners can even place a special order if they are interested in other products that can be mounted.” 8 | Michiana House and Home | July 2021 |

Getting comfortable enough to sit and watch the entirety of a movie is the next item to consider. “There are several options when it comes to outdoor furniture, like a rattan swivel chair or outdoor sofa with half-moon cabana to lightweight aluminum pieces,” indicated Deborah Carpenter, ASID, of Sweet Water Interiors in Goshen. An alternative is to temporarily repurpose poolside furniture like a chaise lounge chair for the duration of a film, especially since it can be moved as needed to a different location in the yard. “The nice thing is that they have the benefit of height adjustments and allow an individual to stretch out his or her feet for ultimate comfort.” “An outdoor space is not complete until one has the cushions and outdoor rug that anchor everything together and solidify the theme,” confirmed Carpenter. Fortunately, those very same cushions come in handy when getting comfy and cozy during an outdoor family movie night. One has to be strategic when it comes to outdoor lighting, however. “Bear in mind that the same lighting principles for an indoor screen apply to one featured outdoors,” explained Hannah Taylor, lighting showroom manager at Kendall Lighting Center in South Bend. More specifically, be sure to keep lights away from an outdoor screen as they can create a glare that negatively impacts viewer visibility. In reality, any light sources should be off to the sides and/or at a distance from the screen itself. Consequently, lanterns come in handy for an outdoor movie night. “Aside from being battery operated and thus easy to recharge, they are portable.” This would be helpful for someone who needs to walk back inside to replenish drinks and snacks. Sometimes a projector is arranged in such a way that viewers can watch the movie while sitting under a pergola. String lighting adorning a pergola would be enough of an illumination source without being too distracting. The key is to use lights that offer a warmer, amber glow. “After all, the lighting does not need to be overly bright – it is not like someone will be reading during the movie.” n Shutterstock.com

Stay Thirsty With These
Water Solutions Shutterstock.com
By Beth Anne Brink-Cox, House and Home Writer
These days it seems all we hear is, “Drink water, drink more water!” And it’s true, there is nothing as refreshing and replenishing as cold, good-tasting water. Often when you feel hungry, your body is trying its best to get more water: if you’re thirsty, you’re dehydrated. After all, we’re 60% water. We need good water to make our coffee and tea, to prepare our baby’s formula, or just to enjoy with some ice and maybe a twist of lemon. At the same time, we’re reminded to cut down on plastic waste as much as possible. So what are some affordable, environmentally friendly ways to improve your health when it comes to drinking water?
CANNEY’S WATER SOLUTIONS Kevin Canney of Canney’s Water Solutions, Inc., South Bend, certainly knows. His family has been in business since 1960, and his store is outgrowing its present location. “Water is all I know. I started working for my family 40 years ago,” Canney said. “Reverse osmosis systems are best sellers, with good reason. They can filter things such as iron and sulfur from your water source, process up to 75 gallons of water a day,” which guarantees all you could want for all drinking and cooking purposes. Canney said their system can be run to your ice maker, too. “You wouldn’t want murky ice in a nice clear glass of water.” He also offers bottled water, delivered as often as desired — “once a week, once a day, whatever you need.” As expected, they also sell and service water softening systems, important for nicer results with laundry and skin care. “And we’ll deliver salt, too, and put it in the softener for you.”
CULLIGAN WATER CONDITIONING Culligan Water Conditioning, Warsaw, is another well-known name in the water business; the Culligan company started in 1936. 10 | Michiana House and Home | July 2021 |
Daniel Hueber said their service workers test your existing supply before installation to determine what you might want to filter away, such as carbon, iron, lead or arsenic. “When someone lists a house for sale, it’s important to have water that looks and smells good — no rust, no sulfur. Our filter systems can take care of that.” They, too, offer water softeners to purchase or rent and deliver salt for them. Culligan also provides water coolers or bottled water if that’s more to your liking, and certainly that’s a nice, convenient way to get some good tasting water.
The Ultimate Hygienic Water Dispenser The Biorefresh Contactless Water Cooler is Culligans’s most hygienic water cooler yet. The touch-free design combined with the power of ultraviolet sterilisation means 100% safe and clean drinking water. Dispense your favourite water by simply hovering a finger 1.5cm above the electronic sensor panel, and watch as your glass fills rapidly with freshly chilled or ambient water.
ONE CALL WATER Margaret Chesnut and her husband Michael of One Call Water, Inc.-Hague Quality Water, Syracuse, sell a patented three-compartment system, WaterMax, that is built from the ground up and both filters and softens your water. In addition, they sell a water filter only, the H-3500, that uses reverse osmosis. The Chesnuts originally worked with Warsaw’s Municipal Water Systems and operated out of their home, but quickly outgrew that location. Always a nice problem for a fast-growing business, they’ve been in business 30 years. “Our business is different than most. We don’t sell preassembled units and we are proud of the American-made systems not sold by any other supplier than Hague. We can remove sediment and extreme hardness,” which can cause limescale buildup, known to cause problems with plumbing, washing machines and coffee makers. So the word of the day is hydrate. Powerful Potential:
Alanna Meersman
Enjoys Being Part of the 4-H Program By Julie Young, House and Home Writer
Alanna Meersman, 14, is a go-getter. For the past six years, she has been honing her potential and showing off her talent as a member of the nation’s largest youth development program that empowers nearly 6 million young people with the leadership skills they can use for a lifetime … 4-H.
“I got involved in 4-H when one of my friends in the fourth grade said she was planning to join. I decided to do it as well and I discovered that it was a lot of fun,” Alanna said. This year, Alanna is excited to showcase a number of 4-H projects in the St. Joseph County Fair, which will be held July 2-10 at 5117 S. Ironwood Drive in South Bend. Her entries include a Julythemed centerpiece arranged from dried flowers, a snowman-inspired gift wrapping display and a household stool made from the base of an old birdbath and the seat of a John Deere tractor. “It’s really comfortable,” she said. “I use it in my bedroom right now but in a few weeks it will be at the fair. I am also entering a dream catcher and a gumball machine that is made from wood and a 12-ounce Mason jar. It holds about 50 gumballs and the best part is you don’t need a quarter to get one. You just turn the little knobs.” Alanna’s most challenging fair entry is the one that involves a live goat and a show ring in which she will present the animal to the judges for evaluation of her showmanship skills. “Showing goats was the first thing I ever did in 4-H and, although I love it, it’s hard,” she said. “Sometimes the goats don’t cooperate the way you’d like for them to and, one year, I had to show the goat in a boot because I broke my ankle. Still it’s very rewarding to step into the ring and be judged for how well I show the goat. It’s a great feeling.” This year came with an additional set of challenges as Alanna underwent spinal fusion surgery. She endured a lengthy recovery period but says her projects were part of her physical therapy. She hopes to become a doctor or a nurse when she is older so that, in some small way, she can pay back the care that was given to her. According to the organization’s website, 4-H believes in developing young people who are empowered, confident, hardworking, determined, responsible and compassionate to see the world beyond themselves so that they have the lifelong skills to succeed in college and their future careers. They create positive learning experiences that are offered by caring, trusted adult members who cultivate positive relationships in safe and inclusive environments. “4-H allows me to explore my interests and learn new things,” Alanna said. “I plan on staying in it until I am 18.” n

Tiger Lilies
are the Last to Bloom in July
By Joyce Arleen Corson, Master Gardener and Guest Columnist
There is no doubt in northern Indiana that July is the month for the plant we call the lily. While the year brings many types of lilies, such as the Christmas amaryllis or the March lily of the valley and the Easter lily followed by the “ditch” lily and many hybrid species of daylilies, the last to bloom is my favorite. It is the tiger lily. It is classified as a true lily with a perennial herbaceous bulb and is not a daylily, which has fingerlings for roots. Other root structures also bear the name lily. For example, the lily of the valley has a pip attached to the rhizome for its root structure. The uses for the lily in landscaping has far-reaching advantages. Fortunately they do
12 | Michiana House and Home | July 2021 |
not all bloom at once. Rather they spread their vibrant colors and bold shapes of petals across the months of summer, making them a valued companion in your garden. The people who seek top-notch flowers throughout the summer will seek the best bloomers. Asiatic hybrids such as Easter lilies and stargazer may be at the top of your list. Daylilies are also prized for their hardy nature and prolific blooming, but they are not true members of the lily family. They belong to the genus Hemerocallis, which means “bloom for one day.” Asiatic lilies and daylilies have different blooming times than the tiger lily. Getting a tiger lily established is not difficult. Most master gardeners will share a start or, like many perennials, it might just hitchhike to a new location. Some may be disappointed that the flowers
with curled back petals that have brown spots are not fragrant, like many other lilies. But, the tiger lily attributes can outscore with other features. The single stalk grows to 5 feet tall and may have as many as 10 blossoms opening in order of maturity on one stalk. They require just average water and it is the only lily that produces a berry like a bulbette at the junction of the lance-shaped leaf to the stalk. The tiger lily is a true hunter for the most productive space to grow. It likes sun, as do all lilies, but will grow in the shade. As they fall to the ground, the bulbettes will seek the warmest, sunny spot in spring to grow and develop. The older the bulb, the more bulbettes are produced. The black, grape-like bulbettes, if left to grow, will produce a flower in three years. These are a desirable plant for the back row of your garden design. The dying stalk and leaves will be hidden from front row annuals or perennials. Some mature bulbs shed layers and those can be cultivated to create a new bulb as well. If you find this easily naturalized lily to become burdensome, remove the bulbettes and plant in another desired location or pass them on to a friend. n Photos:Shutterstock.com

The Ultimate —
Sandboxes CREATE THE PERFECT PLAY AREA By Kathleen Moran, House and Home Writer
Homeowners admittedly spend a great deal of time outdoors with the intention of making their yards look attractive and inviting, whether it is planting a vibrant garden, arranging decorative stone or maintaining a lush lawn. All of these lend themselves to a place for summer entertaining. However, it is possible to create the ultimate outdoor play area for children with a sandbox that encourages their sense of curiosity and inspires adventure. Sandboxes offer children an opportunity to entertain themselves while the adults socialize. An added benefit is that they require minimal maintenance. Aside from bags of sand, the main thing one needs to assemble a sandbox is the wood for the base and frame, described Trey Scott with Kabelin Ace Hardware in South Bend. One thing to keep in mind is that “the amount of sand required to adequately fill a sandbox
14 | Michiana House and Home | July 2021 |
is based on the height of the framed borders rather than just the dimensions of length and width.” In thinking long-term, plywood can be used for the base and a tarp can be used to fortify the sandbox during the colder months so that leaves and snow rest atop the tarp instead of falling directly into the sand. “The tarp can be secured with yard stakes so that it does not blow away.” A representative with Tractor Supply Co. in Goshen emphasized the necessity of “prepping the bottom of a sandbox by lining it with plastic or a layer of mesh, which allows for water to drain without creating a standing mud pit.” The importance of adding a lid or covering of sorts to the sandbox was also stressed as a means of keeping animals out when the sandbox is not in use. As an aside, it should be noted that “old tractor tires are an alternative to the common
wooden-framed sandboxes.” Using old tractor tires cuts down on the number of materials required and, thus, the cost. Randy Jones, a customer service representative with Kuert Outdoor Living in Goshen, recommended digging about four inches into the ground to remove the dirt in the desired location for the sandbox and allow for about six to 10 inches of sand depth. “While this sounds simple enough, a homeowner will need to determine whether to dispose of the dirt or use it somewhere else in the yard for another purpose.” Jones explained that customers often request white silica sand because it looks so nice. However, customers will not be able to purchase it for a sandbox, and for good reason, too. “In actuality, white silica sand has jagged edges, which are visible when it is viewed under a microscope.” Thus, white silica sand should be avoided as it can easily cut someone’s eye. In fact, it is the sand particles’ jagged edges that makes the white silica sand ideal for sandblasting. By contrast, though, homeowners have the option to purchase mason sand. It is a fine sand comparable to what is used on golf courses and safe for children’s play. n Photos:Shutterstock.com RESOURCES: Kabelin Ace Hardware, South Bend, 574-299-1912,

8 soft corn tortillas 1 medium red onion, sliced 1 avocado, skin removed and sliced 1 medium tomato, chopped 8-10 romaine lettuce leaves, torn
In large frying pan or cast-iron skillet, cook bacon until crispy. Remove slices from skillet to drain on paper towel. Pour bacon fat from pan. Shape ground beef into four burger patties, seasoning both sides of patties with salt and pepper. In skillet over medium-high heat, cook burgers about 4 minutes per side for medium doneness. Top each burger with one slice cheese then cover skillet with lid and cook until cheese melts. Remove from heat. In smaller skillet, heat canola oil until hot but not smoking. Quickly crisp tortillas in oil, turning once and removing from pan within one minute. Drain on paper towels to remove excess oil. To build each taco, slice or crumble burgers and cooked bacon. Top each tortilla with 1/2 burger, bacon, onion, avocado, tomato and lettuce. Serve with pickles, ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise, if desired.

If this is the summer that you plan to install a pool for your family to enjoy, make sure you do your homework. A pool is a major investment that requires regular upkeep, but here are six simple steps that can help keep your pool in shape all season long: 1. Know your chemicals and use the proper amounts. 2. Practice quick, daily cleaning to keep the job from getting out of control. 3. Use a pool vacuum to make cleanup easier. 4. “Shock” the pool twice each season. (Shocking refers to adding a high volume of chemicals to combat bacteria.) 5. Check your water levels. 6. Call in the pros for a yearly pool checkup or whenever the job seems too big for you to handle yourself.
