The “Warsaw Salutes You Banner” recognition program began as a KYLA project in 2020 during Elizabeth eth Stone’s junior year at Warsaw Community High School hool ne. as a way to honor her brother, U.S. Navy Lt. Nate Stone. astAt the time, he was serving on the USS California, a fastattack submarine. He is now retired from active duty but serves in the Reserves. 00 Since the program’s inauguration in 2020, over 100 ed United States military honorees have been recognized arwith banners displayed on East Market Street in Warve saw. These honorees have included veterans and active y, duty men and women from all branches of the military, eras, conflicts, and varying ranks of service. i“We recognize that every military duty is a sacrifice, and we are grateful for the men and women whoo have served and continue to choose to serve our coun-try in this capacity,” Stone said. “We recognize this as a great opportunity to build and strengthen communityy and spirit of patriotism.” The banners were originally on a six-month rotation, but the banners will now be displayed annually starting on Veterans Day and will be displayed for an entire year. “We hope that this will give more time to honor and appreciate those who served or are currently serving in the military,” said Stone’s mother, Megan. Last year, 20 men and women were honored for their military service. One such honoree is Niki Shumpert, who was sponsored by Debra Shumpert. Niki is a U.S. Army $ERYH 3KRWR +2125,1* +( Sergeant First Class, who served in the global war %527+(5 ³ (O 5 L]DEHWK 6WRQH DQ on terrorism. The cost per banner is $65 EHLQJ GLVSOD\HG LQ :DUVDZ XQWLO QHZ and the banners will be returned to the applicant EDQQHUV JR XS 1RY 3KRWR SURYLG HG the following year when they are removed. “They are keepsake banners. We clean them and give them to the family when they come down,” said Megan. The banners will be on display starting Veterans Day, Nov. 11. To nominate a veteran, they must reside in the greater Warsaw area, be on active duty, or be a veteran, living or deceased. These can be someone from the World War II era or someone currently serving in one of the Armed Forces. Further details, policy and guidelines are outlined in the application.
