The Magical Meadows WYLWHYLZ MVY [O ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION %\ .(,7+ .1(33 6WDII :ULWHU Nearly 15 years ago, The Magical Meadows consisted of one horse, one rider and a vision. This October, The Meadows as it is affectionately referred to by those who run, volunteer and use the facility, will be completing its 14th year and will begin its 15th anniversary celebration. “Magical Meadows was created out of a love for horses and a belief that getting away from the noise and busyness of our everyday lives to connect with the natural world has the power to heal,” said Pastor and Executive Director Carl Adams, “We exist to provide a natural space for those with physical, mental or emotional challenges, along with their families, to experience the healing power of horses.” In 2007, founder Tammy Stackhouse was approached by the family of a young man with autism who rode her school bus asking if he could meet her horses. After researching the connection with horses and people with “different” abilities, she began the journey of what is now the Magical Meadows. It began on her personal property, not knowing where it was going to go, but believing the special needs community needed this opportunity. Now, The Meadows has 19 horses utilized by 150 riders from across northern Indiana. All of the school districts in Kosciusko County utilize

the facility for their special needs classes. Additionally, social services organizations, including the Bowen Center, Cardinal Services and Bashor Children’s Home, all have individuals who come to The Meadows. “Many of the riders who started here 14 years ago still come here,” noted Adams, who first visited The Meadows around a decade ago as a caretaker for two residents of Cardinal Services. “After seeing the difference that Magical Meadows’ services made, my passion ignited and I decided to become involved with the organization.” In its early stages, The Meadows was able to purchase 7 acres north of Warsaw with help from the Dr. Dane and Mary Louise Miller Foundation. It was quickly realized that wasn’t enough property for what the nonprofit organization wanted to accomplish. In 2017, thanks in part to a matching grant provided by the K21 Foundation, The Meadows was able to add another 40 acres, which not only gave them more space for their programming but also allowed them to produce their own hay to help feed the horses. Along the way, numerous families, businesses and organizations have stood up to help support the mission of The Meadows, donating thousands of dollars and volunteer hours to help support its efforts. Host parents share values and day-to-day life with exchange students %\ /$85,( /(&+/,71(5 6WDII :ULWHU “We’ve hosted six exchange students,” stated Julie Wagoner, Winona Lake. “Our last student left this past June. They get some distorted views of what America is like from watching television and movies. I like that we not only get to share our values with these young people, but also our day-today lives.” When the Wagoners were first approached about hosting an exchange student, they declined. “Our four kids really wanted to host a student. But at that time, we lived in an old farmhouse in North Manchester with only one bathroom. Since there were six of us in the house, I felt we really didn’t have the space for one more.” However, as her children moved out on their own, she reconsidered. “One of my co-workers asked me to host an exchange student. We were still living in the farmhouse, but now had only one child left at home. We said ‘yes.’” The Wagoners’ first exchange student was a boy from Seoul, South Korea. “Since he was from a big city, he had trouble adjusting to farm life in the wide open spaces.

He was unhappy and it was a challenge for our family.” The second exchange student was a much better fit. “Simone was a half-year exchange student from Italy. He and my son got along just great. He’ll always be part of our family. He came back this past April for our daughter’s wedding.” Next the Wagoners hosted two girls, one from Austria and one from Italy. “Hosting girls is a whole different thing. Our boys ate everything in sight. But the girls watched their figures. When my husband Mark picked up the girls from school one day, the Austrian student told him she needed to stop at the store for a makeup emergency purchase. Our girls loved to go shopping.” Unfortunately, the two girls had to go home in March. “That was when the pandemic hit internationally.” The Wagoners moved to Winona Lake in July 2021. “We hosted two more exchange students in our new home. This time two boys. One was from Italy and the other from Austria. Our last student left this past June.” One of the things the Wagoners enjoyed doing with the kids was going on vacation. “We loved taking

None had been there and it was truly a memorable experience for them and for us.” It was actually a cultural exchange. “We got a little insight into their world back home and they lived in our world. Mark and I hope to visit our students at their homes in the future.” One of the privileges the family had was taking the students to church. “That’s a very important part of our lives. We got to share our love of the Lord and our value system with them.” Wagoner is a nurse, working for the health department. “I’ve worked in nursing home settings for many years. Now I’m an inspector of nursing homes in the area.” She enjoys interacting with the elderly. “I love hearing their stories. I also enjoy the fact that I am helping them have a good quality life.” She and her husband, Mark, have been married 31 years. They have four grown children and one granddaughter. goal is to raise another $50,000 to achieve The Meadows’ overall hope of raising $100,000 in 2022. “We want everyone to know we aren’t going anywhere,” concluded Adams. “The need is still great. Magical Meadows will be here to meet the needs of the community as the years go by. With the help of individuals and businesses, we will be able to remain a staple in the community.” For further information, visit themagicalmeadows.org. Continued from page 1 saw a need for a hay barn and donated $31,000 for its construction, which was completed in January 2021. Sadly, 14 months later the barn was destroyed when straight line winds blew across the fields. Because of construction price increases, the amount for which the barn was insured was not enough to cover its replacement. “Fortunately, between the insurance and donations from various individuals and companies, we will be able to rebuild the barn in September,” said Stackhouse. “Additionally, funding for The Meadows has allowed the organization to hire an administrative assistant to help with the day-today operations.” “We’re excited to be implementing more programs,” said Adams. “We’re planning to host more day camps in the winter. The Creighton family and the Creighton Family Foundation have donated $20,000 for us to add six automatic watering systems to keep our horses healthy.” The Meadows’ annual spring fundraiser, “Rise Up,” allowed the Meadows to reach its goal of $50,000. This fall, they will hold another fundraiser that will benefit from a matching grant. The

Art in Action —

Surprising hidden artist – singer/songwriter Bob Dylan %\ '$5/$ 0&&$0021 DQG '$5/(1( 520$12 “The most beautiful thing an artist can leave behind for others is their work. It is the only thing that can transcend them.” Bob Dylan said in a 1985 interview with Bob Brown from ABC. Continuing our series on celebrities who are also artists, this week’s focus is on the award-winning singer/songwriter Bob Dylan, who was born May 24, 1941, and grew up in the iron mining town of Hibbing, Minn. After finding success as a singer, Dylan started exploring other areas of creativity. In the spring of 1974, he began taking art classes from the painter Normal Raeben at Raeben’s 11th floor studio in Carnegie Hall on 57th Street in Manhattan. Even though he spent time with Raeben to learn to paint, Dylan later said it was Raeben who renewed his ability to compose songs. It has been 46 years since Dylan worked with Raeben, and

Echoes of the Past celebrate another successful fair week As visitors came and went throughout the week at the Kosciusko County Fair, the Antique Village was buzzing with activity, provided by The Echoes of the Past. Ice cream was served daily, starting Sunday after the fair. Patrons were treated to vanilla, chocolate, banana and lemon as flavor choices this year. On Tuesday, the club played host to the YMCA kids summer camp. The kids were treated to ropemaking and tractor driving. Eighty children were taken for spins around the tractor course. The sawmill was also demonstrated throughout the week. Walnut and cherry logs were cut to raw lumber to be used in projects. Visitors to the village were able to watch the process on

Monday and Wednesday. Due to the rain on Friday, the saw was unable to be run. Those patronizing the village did not leave hungry. Sweet corn, ham and beans and chili were all served during the week. The tractor driving experience was a big hit with the young and old alike. More than 250 drivers were treated to the excitement of driving a tractor for the first time. Many kids returned for more than one drive. The week culminated in the 4-H auction. The mission of the club is to help preserve agricultural education. One way of doing that is by supporting FFA and 4-H. The club was able to support 32 4-H members selling their livestock.

to offer. The system consists of Whitko Jr./Sr. High School, Whitko Career Academy, Pierceton Elementary School, South Whitley Elementary School and Little Cats Early Learning. Spread across two counties, Kosciusko and Whitley, Whitko is a huge part of the community through teaching local young people. “At Whitko we value our students and their families, our staff and the communities we call home. That’s why we are committed to excellence in everything we do while providing you with multiple educational opportunities in a small school atmosphere. That’s the Whitko advantage,” according to whitko.org. Opportunities in the Whitko Community School System are vast, with everything from academics, activities, clubs, arts, athletics and technology being offered and encouraged. Fairly new to Whitko Community Schools is the Whitko Career Academy. “WCA offers an extraordinary educational environment and has created additional opportunities for students within Whitko Community Schools. Your child has the opportunity to explore a career and earn advanced technical skills, credentials and certifications, college credits, and prepare for a successful future, whether they are career- or college-bound.” WCA offers hands-on, realworld experiences for students to prepare for life after education in the ever-changing workforce. Having the advanced opportunities through the WCA is just another great asset for Whitko Community Schools. The community has so many fantastic educators, bus drivers, coaches, administrators, food service workers, custodians and other staff members who all make such an impact in the community.

Echoes of the Past support 30 4-H members at auction During the many activities throughout the year, the ice cream sales and tractor driving experience donations received at Echoes of the Past events are accumulated and saved in an account to be used at the Kosciusko County Fair auction to help support 4-H members. The livestock put up for auction through the heartache and tears of their owners are often bid on by many. The hard work and dedication the members put into their animals all year long then comes to an end. Some of those members may be starting all over again next year; for others, the auction may be the last one of their 10-year 4-H career. This year the Echoes of the Past was able to support 30 members with the sale of their animals by spending $8,600. This is double what the club has been able to do in the past. The club appreciates the support of the community who attend our events. Without the support of those who patronize our events, we would not be able to help so many kids.

Legislators view conservation work in Kosciusko County Showcasing Kosciusko County conservation projects to improve soil health and water quality was the highlight of a tour on June 20 for Indiana Representatives Ethan Manning and David Abbot. The tour was organized by Indiana Department of Natural Resources and Indiana State Department of Agriculture. The tour group included agency personnel from several IDNR divisions, ISDA, Kosciusko Soil and Water Conservation District, Indiana Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts, The Watershed Foundation, Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation and Ecosystems Connections Institute. The tour began at WACF with presentations by Dr. Jerry Sweeten (ECI), Beth Morris (WACF ecology committee chair) and Heather Harwood (WACF executive director). Afterward a driving tour showcased conservation practices, including a two-stage ditch, streambank restoration and WASCOBs. SWCD Chairman David Ransbottom and Vice Chairman Jamie Scott, with SWCD staff Darci Zolman and Melinda Miller, met the group at a multifaceted Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program project established by Don and Darci Zolman. The project includ-

ed former cropland converted to a restored wetland, tree planting and native pollinator planting. The tour ended at Winona Lake with a presentation by Lyn Crighton (TWF executive

director) about a natural shoreline project. The tour provided an excellent opportunity to highlight conservation projects in the county, as well as a meaningful discussion about the need for additional projects

and funding mechanisms. SWCD appreciated Representatives Abbot and Manning for their time and discussion, as well as the conservation partners who came together to make this a successful tour. Great job by all!

Upper Middle Eel River Watershed Workshop scheduled for September There is a lot of information about agricultural conservation practices and soil health, some factual and some not. In an effort to debunk some of the misinformation, the Soil and Water Conservation Districts of Kosciusko, Huntington, Wabash and Whitley counties, through a Clean Water Indiana grant, will be hosting a workshop from 2-6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, at the Cleveland Township Fire Station, 217 N. State St., South Whitley. The event will include several speakers,

demonstrations, a farmer panel, PARP credits and a free meal. Hans Schmitz, CCSI lead conservation cropping system agronomist, will present the topic, “Soil Management by Farmers Makes a Difference,” which will address improving soil health and the economic payoff. DeKalb County NRCS District Conservationist Derrek Thompson’s theme is “Get to the Root of It.” Adam Jones, NRCS district conservationist in Wabash County, will present “Making Cover Crop Termination Fit

into Your Soil Health Cropping System.” PARP credits will be given for a presentation on cover crop and weed seed and cover crop identification. Geoff Schortgen and John Woodmansee, Purdue Extension, will be giving this program. The program will end with a live demonstration of soil health using Kosciusko County’s rain simulator, given by NRCS District Conservationist Chad Schotter in the Kosciusko County office. Riverwatch workshop at Washington STEM Academy Clean, abundant water is a valuable resource for all Hoosiers. Whether as a source for drinking water, water for business and industry or for recreation, it is irreplaceable. And again this year, a number of Hoosiers will become trained to help monitor this precious resource. Hoosier Riverwatch, a statewide water monitoring education program, will host a series of workshops around the state to train people to monitor local streams and rivers. The next local volunteer stream monitoring workshop will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2, at Washington STEM Academy. It is being sponsored by the Kosciusko County Soil and Water Conservation District. The training is for anyone interested in learning about water quality and gaining hands-on experience in monitoring rivers and streams. People interested in the environment, especially educators, are encouraged to attend. The workshop will provide general education in water quality issues and hands-on training in monitoring the health of rivers and streams through physi-

cal, chemical and biological testing. The training is free, 5 , 9 ( 5 : $ 7 & + but class size is limited. :25.6+23 ³ 3DU Persons interested in parWLFLSDQWV DW RQH RI ODVW ticipating must make a pri\HDU·V 5LYHUZDWFK ZRUN or reservation by contactVKRSV ZDGHG LQWR WKH ing Darci Zolman at darci. Hoosier Riverwatch, sponsored by IDEM, is a statewide education program that focuses on local rivers and streams stewardship. The Riverwatch monitoring program fits easily into elementary, middle and high school classes, including biology, chemistry, math, language arts and social studies. It is also useful for citizens interested in learning more about water quality and being an active participant in statewide monitoring efforts.

Award-winning natural resource programs —

Educators! Come get WET and WILD at August workshops Educators! Do you need some readyto-go activities to supplement a lesson that are field tested, award winning and student proven fun and effective? Are you a master naturalist needing training hours? There are two options to get WET and WILD at free workshops sponsored by the Kosciusko County Soil and Water Conservation District and facilitated by certified trainer Darci Zolman, SWCD program administrator. The award-winning Project WET and Project WILD Aquatic workshops will be offered from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 1 at Washington STEM Academy, Warsaw, and again Tuesday, Aug. 23, at Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center, Wolf Lake. Participants will come away with two amazing curricula, Project WET and Project Aquatic WILD. The WET guide contains more than 90 broadbased water resource activities that are hands-on, easy to use and fun. Participants will also receive the Project WILD Aquatic Curriculum and Activity Guide, which contains an additional 50 activities focused on the fascinating world of water and the aquatic habitats it supports. The goal of this workshop is to promote awareness, appreciation, knowledge and stewardship of water resources and its

inhabitants through the program’s classroom-ready teaching aids. It includes many water-related topics, including atmospheric, surface and ground water, chemistry, water history, watersheds, wetlands, aquatic wildlife, water quality, water use, water management, wildlife populations, habitats and ecosystems, adaptations and biodiversity. WET and WILD activities are designed to satisfy the goals of educational programs by complementing existing curricula, rather than displacing or adding more concepts. These activities provide many opportunities to address curricula objectives and educational standards. They are interdisciplinary, designed for students in grades K-12, and are well suited for use in both formal and non-formal education settings. Each of these curricula are sponsored by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. There is no registration fee for this workshop; however, pre-registration is required. For additional information about this workshop or to register, contact Darci Zolman at the Kosciusko County Soil and Water Conservation District office at (574) 267-7445, ext. 5374, or darci.zolman@ in.nacdnet.net.

Kosciusko SWCD’s Master Naturalist class visits Pisgah Marsh The glaciers had a lot of fun in northern Indiana, leaving behind several unique geologic features. Kosciusko’s current Indiana Master Naturalist class recently learned about these features from hydrogeologist Tony Fleming at the soil/geology class held at Pisgah Marsh. Pisgah was the perfect spot for this session, allowing the class to experience the diversity of soils and minerals, wetlands, lake and upland woodland in the field, in close proximity. Additionally, the Pisgah boardwalk is located on an esker, a long, winding ridge of stratified sand and gravel, formed within ice-walled tunnels by streams that flowed within and under glaciers. Class members learned how to “read” the diversity of landscapes at this property. Previous sessions for this class includ-

ed wildflowers at Wildwood and birds at Koinonia. Upcoming sessions will include aquatics at Winona Lake and mammals and habitats at Oak Island. Kosciusko’s Master Naturalist program meets once a month from March to November, meeting at various locations around the county to showcase unique natural areas. The Master Naturalist program is run by Indiana’s Department of Natural Resources and sponsored locally by the Kosciusko County Soil and Water Conservation District. In addition to learning about our county’s natural resources, there is a focus on local volunteerism. For more information about this program, or to get on the waiting list for the 2023 class, please contact Darci Zolman at darci.zolman@in.nacdnet.net or call the office at (574) 267-7445, ext. 5374.

Sixth annual Snapshot Water Monitoring Day set for Sept. 21 The sixth annual Snapshot Water Monitoring Day has been set for Wednesday, Sept. 21. At this event, volunteers from the community give their time to learn about and conduct tests on important indicators of our water’s overall health, such as dissolved oxygen levels, pH, temperature, E. coli and more. At past events, more than 200 citizen scientists joined forces to collect, test and analyze water samples from all across our community. This single day “snapshot” of water quality in our local watershed is hosted by The Watershed Foundation and sponsored by Kosciusko County Soil and Water Conservation District. “Snapshot Monitoring Day is a really special opportunity to engage with the public in a very meaningful way. Along with the important data collection that happens, we really value the community involvement that takes place,” said TWF Executive Director and founder of Snapshot Monitoring Day, Lyn Crighton. “Once people literally get their feet wet, they become much more invested in protecting our beautiful lakes and streams.” Monitoring volunteers will meet at a staging site to receive water sampling and testing supplies. From there they will head to the field to collect samples from their assigned locations. They then return to their
