no other before %\ 7,0 $6+/(< 6WDII :ULWHU Dr. David Hoffert, Warsaw Community Schools superintendent, summed up the 2020-21 academic year by noting Warsaw has had public schools for more than 170 years but this year was different than any of those years. “It was the most challenging and the most rewarding,” he said. Students wearing masks, social distancing and spreading everything out more, fewer field trips or athletic trips, increased hand washing and sanitizing, escalated virtual learning and more added up to a school year that won’t soon be forgotten. The COVID pandemic not only altered the school year, but has spurred some changes that will remain in place even after the pandemic is no longer a major concern. Hoffert said when the pandemic arrived in March 2020, a very quick transition to virtual learning had to be made once Gov. Eric Holcomb ordered schools to no longer be open. Hoffert and others learned about digital learning platforms such as Google Meet, Zoom and others they simply were not very familiar with.

Due to the “fear of what is there,” it was even harder to start summer school last year but the decision was made to do so and it opened July 1. “It was scary at first,” Hoffert commented. Referring to summer school he said, “If we can do this, we can get elementary school off the ground (in August).” High school graduation in 2020 was also a big step forward and it was held for the first time ever outdoors. “We were able to defy the odds,” and have a graduation ceremony, he noted. Making the decision to open up every school building in August for in-person learning was not popular with everyone, but Hoffert said, “We believe very strongly in-person education is the best option.” Also, he pointed out Warsaw Community Schools is the third largest employer in Kosciusko County and has a definite impact on the local economy. Trying to be as “normal” as possible, school buildings were opened and remained open, though with challenges, throughout the school year. “We were one of the largest school districts in the state to stay

open,” Hoffert said. November was particularly challenging, he said, when the second wave of COVID hit and the numbers of those testing positive increased. Several staff members had to go into quarantine due to being in close contact with someone who had COVID. “We had to shuffle people around,” he said. “It wasn’t like we could ask for more volunteers.” The high school had the most quarantines likely due to students switching classes and having more exposure to the virus outside of school settings during traveling, sports, sleepovers, etc. “But we didn’t have to shut down any games or have any teams in quarantine,” Hoffert said, though schedules were changed to limit traveling and some opposing teams had to forfeit games due to quarantines. Mental health issues increased “and we don’t know the extent yet of mental health issues,” he said, adding, “It’s a different stress, one we could not begin to comprehend.” Some school districts had teachers trying to juggle teaching both in-person and virtually, but Warsaw chose to have teachers doing either one or the other with the

exception of some in-person teachers teaching virtually only if their schedule allowed it. As stressful as the school year was at times, there were also rewards. “Everyone came together for a common purpose,” Hoffert commented. Much was learned about the importance of cleaning, new teaching methods, how students learn and gaps for student access to Wi-Fi were filled in. Students were very adaptable because they didn’t want to be isolated from their friends and remain at home like it was especially for a few months last year. The importance of in-person learning was also reinforced. “Learning people and relational skills is critical,” Hoffert noted, saying one example is it is very hard to learn to read without human interaction. Moving forward, some things will remain the same, such as the new cleaning procedures and the importance of social and emotional learning will be emphasized. Returning to the normalcy of much of the 2019-20 school year is certainly hoped for, “but a lot can change,” Hoffert commented.

After years in the field of human resources, Audrey Russell recently took on an unusual role at Wildman. When she was interviewing for her previous role as director of human resources seven years ago, her boss, Josh Wildman, asked if she had ever read the book “Dream Manager” by Matthew Kelly. Today Russell is the director of dream management, which she describes as “really just helping employees become the best versions of themselves.” In this new role she invites employees to dream with her and work toward fulfilling both their personal and work-related goals. As adults, she believes life tends to get in the way and we forget how to dream. After completing the dream management certification program, she is now better equipped to help reteach people not only how to dream, but how to work toward making their dreams a reality. Once Russell had to step out of her own comfort zone and relinquish her HR duties, she set a goal of getting 75 dreamers by September 2021. By December 2020, she had already surpassed her goal by having 78. Her dreamers have a wide variety of goals, including becoming debt free, working on physical or mental health and strengthening their family. Some want to travel more, finish a degree, buy a home, learn to fly or even just increase their confidence levels. When working toward a dream, Russell stated, the most important thing is to be intentional with how you are spending your time. Dreaming is a year-long program with Russell and she meets with each individual

She starts by having each individual list 100 dreams. “Sometimes even finding time to dream is difficult,” she admitted. But her goal is “to get them to dream and hold them accountable to what they say they want.” With locations also in Fort Wayne, Indianapolis and South Bend, Russell also travels to meet with each of the employee dreamers there as well. In her own dream journal, she mentioned a few of her own personal dreams have included weight loss, buying riverfront property, reconnecting with family and friends, and even just smiling more. In order to keep track of her own progress, she regularly goes through and highlights the dreams on her list she’s accomplished. “I know I’m not the same person that started this a year ago,” she stressed. Despite being an introvert

by nature, this job makes her want to be around people. Another of Russell’s goals was to invest more in people, which her new dream manager role has certainly helped her to do. Although dreaming is technically her job, she also makes a point of listening more intently to her family in order to help them make their dreams a reality. She has discovered that, when dreamers connect with one another, it is easier to work together and support one another in completing those goals and dreams. The ultimate goal of dreaming is to create a good and satisfying work/life balance. The happier one is with their personal life, the happier they will be in their career. And vice versa. Russell considers her current role as her most rewarding job yet. “Even the smallest things I do can make a difference for people,” she remarked.

It’s not up to Congress

Heavy metals in our food?

How can Congress remove Cheney from office? I thought it was up to the people who voted someone in. How can they remove someone the people voted in? If the people don’t like her, they just vote her out the next time. But it’s not up to Congress to take away our vote. That isn’t right. It is becoming more and more liberal in Congress and the Democrats are more and more taking over. If people don’t watch and be careful, we’re going to become very communistic. It seems like it’s starting to happen that way already.

I heard on the news they’re finding a lot of heavy metals in baby food such as lead and arsenic, and there was a couple others. Anyway, they’re real high levels of it, and dangerous for babies to be eating. My thought is, if they’re finding it in baby food, how much of it is actually in adult food also? That could by why a lot of adults are having a lot of health problems, too, because we’re getting heavy metals in our food we aren’t supposed to be eating. I think they need to be checking all the food — not just the baby food but even the adult food. And the FDA doesn’t seem to want to do anything about it, they said.

which includes breakfast and lunch. Financial assistance scholarships are available.

Tesla’s making all those electric cars. They think that’s going to solve all our global warming problems. It’s going to create a lot more problems, because it’s going to take a lot of electricity to power all those batteries in all of those cars. And guess what that’s going to create? More nuclear power plants to give us more power. And those nuclear power plants are just as dangerous as more global warming. Look at what happened to Russia with Chernobyl. It’s created a lot of radiation there, and no one can live in that area now. What do you think’s going to happen to America when our nuclear power plants start melting down or breaking down? We’re going to be in big trouble. And that’ll be a lot worse than global warming.

I recently saw information on JCAP. That was an original program started by Sheriff Rocky. There was never much previous publicity, so I’ve been wondering the percentage of success in the program and how many have failed and returned to the program. I also in recent travels saw many inmates working on roadsides doing cleanup and wondered, if these same inmates are truly serious about rehabilitation, why they couldn’t be productive and clean up along the roads to contribute to society.

Warblers are mostly birds of the trees Warblers, the warblers that interest me, are birds, little birds, like goldfinches or chipping sparrows, though there are a few species that are bigger. They are birds of the trees, again, most of them. They feed on insects. They’re highly active and, of course, they go south for the winter, migrate, some as far as Mexico and South America. There aren’t many insects for them to feed on in the northern part of their range in winter. They fly at night, feed and

rest during the day. The summer range of many species, however, extends to the northern limit of trees in Canada. There are more than a hundred species of warbler. There are more species of warbler than of sparrows, LBJs, little brown jobs. Two warblers, northern and Louisiana waterthrush, are of a different size and shape than the other warblers. To me the waterthrushes look more like shore birds than warblers. They look different and they act different than other warblers. Other warblers are birds of the trees. They rarely even fly to the ground. Waterthrushes, on the other hand, feed and nest on the ground. One other warbler, the ovenbird, spends much of the day on the ground. It nests on the ground. It’s named for its nest which is shaped like an oven, a little canopy of grass, open on one side, closed over on top. Yellow is a common and characteristic color of many warblers, though it’s usually accompanied by one or more other colors. One warbler, the appropriately named yellow warbler, is nearly all yellow. A male yellow warbler particularly lives up to the name. It’s bright yellow on the face, throat, breast and belly, duller yellow, but still yellow, on the back, wings and tail. It has bright red streaks on the breast. Other warblers with splashes of yellow are yellow throat, which has a yellow breast and belly, northern parula which has a yellow throat

and upper breast, tropical parula which has a yellow throat, breast and belly, chestnut-sided warbler with a yellow crown, magnolia warbler, yellow throat, belly and rump, Cape May warbler, yellow around the face and breast and belly bright yellow streaked with black, yellow-rumped warbler, yellow crown, shoulder patches and yellow rump, black-throated green warbler, yellow cheeks, hermit warbler, yellow face. The female Blackburnian warbler has a yellow face and throat, but the male has an orange face and throat. The palm warbler has a yellow line above the eye and a yellow throat, breast and belly. Its throat and upper breast are streaked with brown. The mourning warbler has a yellow belly and under tail coverts, the Connecticut warbler a yellow belly and under tail coverts. The common yellowthroat has a yellow line above the eye, a black mask and a yellow breast and belly. The yellow-breasted chat and prothonotary warbler have a yellow head, breast and belly. One more warbler, the Nashville, has a yellow throat and belly. I add Nashville because my daughter and I saw one recently. There are more warblers with yellow, many more, but I’ve named enough for this article. Instead of naming more warblers with yellow, here are a few with other colors. There are black-throated blue and black-throated green warblers. There is a cerulean warbler which is blue on the head, back,

wings and tail, white on the throat, breast and belly. There are blackand-white and blackpoll warblers. The American redstart, which is a warbler, is black with patches of red in its wings and tail. Now is the time to see these little feathered sprites, now when

flies and bees, ants and other insects are out and about, when mosquitoes aren’t numerous yet, when warblers that nest farther north haven’t passed us by. Now is the time, when it isn’t raining, or snowing, as it did one day earlier in May.

New Paris the place to be for Garage Sale Days It is time again for New Paris Garage Sale Days. That’s days, plural. The search for bargains officially starts Saturday, June 5, however, some participants will start their sales as early as Wednesday, June 2. This year 100 residents have signed up to have garage sales and organizers believe there will be more in the area. Sales will be taking place in downtown New Paris and the surrounding area. Maps and listings to locate the garage sales will be available at the following locations: Hooville General Store, Miller TV, Jim’s Store, Interra Credit Union, New Paris Pro Hardware and New Paris Telephone. Public restrooms will be provided at Sunnyside Park and at Hooville General Store. Hooville General Store will be featuring Holy Smokes as well.

There will also be several food vendors selling their wares. Churches and non-profit organizations will be holding fundraisers during garage sale days including: New Paris Church of the Brethren, 68170 Division St., will have its annual strawberry shortcake fundraiser, featuring homemade shortcakes, fresh strawberries and vanilla ice cream. New Paris Missionary Church’s youth group will be selling hillbilly hot dogs, soda and chips. Bethany Church will be extending its rummage sale to Friday and Saturday, June 4-5.
