S`V iSd_ Xd[W`VeZ[b % 5$< %$/2*+ %\ 5$< %$/2*+ 6WDII :ULWHU Kosciusko County Senior Services provides the county’s only mobile meals program, and the dedicated administrators and volunteers stay busy delivering up to 350 midday meals a week to customers from Milford to Pierceton, North Webster to Etna Green. Jennifer Buzzard, the agency’s mobile meals coordinator since August 2021, said Senior Services contracts with several vendors to obtain the meals, which are delivered yearround Monday through Friday. The food services for Lutheran Hospital serves four of the agency’s six routes, and volunteers pick up meals from Miller’s Merry Manor for the Syracuse route and Harvest Coffee to cover Milford customers. Each meal follows federal nutrition guidelines and contains a hot meat entree, potato or rice, vegetable, whole grain bread, a serving of dairy and some fruit. Frozen meals for use during the weekend are available for delivery Wednesdays. Meal recipients must be at least 60 years old and live in Kosciusko County. Many are referred to the program by family members, friends, social services or doctors’ offices. The
b i by b calling lli 267 2912 and d process begins (574) 267-2912 requesting an application. Upon receiving the completed paperwork, Buzzard determines the meal price, which can range from $3 to $5 depending upon individual financial circumstances. “We basically charge by how much income the customer has left after paying all their bills,” she said. “Real Services kicks in and pays the rest of the price for the meals.” Buzzard faxes a copy of the forms to the customer’s doctor for instructions on diet restrictions. “All meals are made low sodium and low cholesterol. The customer can also pick what to change or eliminate and 90% of the time we can accommodate. So they can try to be picky — to a point.” Customers specify how many meals they want each week and choose the days of delivery, and Buzzard notifies the respective kitchens of the new clientele. Their names, addresses, contact information, emergency contacts, diet restrictions and any special instructions are recorded in the reference binder used by each driver. “The deliveries are not just meals, but also a wellness check and a chance for conversation and companionship,” Buzzard said. “Sometimes we are the only people they see. Some have no one checking on them,” said Cindy Hunter, who has been a volunteer driver

ith Kosciusko K i k S i with Senior Services for five years after doing the same volunteer work in Wabash for nine years. When Hunter moved to Warsaw five years ago, “the first two things I did was get a library card and find some way to volunteer to drive mobile meals. I’ve always been drawn to older people and I love my people so much. Even when they do not come to the door I try to at least lay my eye on them.” Mary Hartle, in her 16th year as a volunteer driver, said the most gratifying aspect of her work is “the people are so appreciative and so nice to me, I just can’t get over that.” Mobile Meals, a nonprofit endeavor, is looking for monetary donations and volunteers. “We need volunteers now because some drivers go to Florida or don’t like driving in this weather or are afraid to slip and fall,” said Buzzard, who noted 98% of the drivers are retirees. “At the end of the day you feel that you helped a senior. If you want to help the community, volunteer.” For more information or to volunteer or make a donation, call (574) 267-2912 and ask for Jen or Bev or visit www.kosciuskoseniorservices.org.

KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOR
Cookie Hartman is ‘all about charity’ %\ 5$< %$/2*+ 6WDII :ULWHU Cookie Hartman came by her nickname honestly. In fact, the sweet baked goods are what got her motor running when she was a little girl. “I grew up as the youngest in a family of 10 kids,” she said. “They taught me to walk by holding out a cookie.” The 67-year-old Warsaw resident was born and raised in Nappanee. “Then I turned 18, got married and moved to Syracuse.” She moved to Warsaw in 2013. She has two grown children, a son, 45, and a 41-year-old daughter who “lives with me with her two kids.” Hartman said one of her favorite hobbies is spending time with her daughter and grandkids. She said she also likes to read and fish. Her working career was devoted to decades of factory labor in a variety of production industries, and then working for a business collection agency in Warsaw. Hartman retired in 2018. But she hasn’t stopped working, though now her chosen activities are “all about charity. I find the most satisfaction doing charity work and quilt making.” She’s a relative newbie at quilt making — and to the
craft of sewing — having been invited in 2019 by her sister-inlaw, Marsha Huffman, to join the Liberty Sewing Circle at the Kosciusko Senior Services activity center to make Quilts of Honor. “She called to invite me and I said, ‘You know I can’t sew.’ She said, ‘Just come down and talk and meet the ladies.’ Well, I made 10 quilts my first year. Once you get into it, it is so much fun.” The Liberty group meets every other Monday and Tuesday at the senior center, 800 N. Park Ave., Warsaw, and Thursday and Friday during alternate weeks at New Life Christian Church & World Outreach, 744 S. 325E, Warsaw. Hartman joined a second group, American Sewing Guild, which meets the third Saturday of each month. She is committed to sewing “any kind of charitable work,” and has been tirelessly prolific in her altruism. She has completed “15 to 20” quilts to date, and has contributed her fair share of labor to other projects. “We sew bowl cozies, which are like hot pads shaped like soup bowls to keep people from burning their fingers. As a group we just made 70 of them to donate to the Salvation Army.”

Call to complain Many Warsaw-area railroad crossings need repair. Stop at the RR crossing and take a photo of the “Report Problem” sign. Then call the toll-free number posted, noting the crossing ID included on the sign. If enough of us call, maybe someone will finally take action. When it comes to crossings, it seems the city and county either don’t care, or are unable to make a difference.
Get your shot I don’t understand just why some of you stupid people refuse to help the rest of us out and get your COVID shots. We
know they work in preventing the virus from putting you in the hospital, using up those beds which are needed for those really sick folks. Get your shots. It could just be you were never taught to read. Maybe your neighbor will read this for you. Wear a mask. It just may keep you alive a bit longer.
Warsaw Community Public Library will host the following events in February. Watch bedtime stories at 7 p.m. every Thursday in February. Toddler story time takes place at 10:15 a.m. every Wednesday in February. Ages 2 and younger will enjoy age-appropriate activities and stories with Miss Stephanie. Friends of the Library Story Emporium Bookstore will be open

RP Home and Harvest I found out recently the store formerly known as Big R is now reopened under the new name written above. I heard from an employee they are trying to advertise but a lot of people still don’t know.

Kosciusko Master Naturalist program registration open Kosciusko Master Naturalist Program is currently taking applications for its 2022 class. Sponsored by the Kosciusko County Soil and Water Conservation District, the program will introduce participants to several natural resource topics, while showcasing various local natural areas. The classes will meet approximately once a month, March through October, 5:30-8:30 p.m., except for the early October class, which will meet 6:30-9:30 p.m. to take advantage of dark sky conditions. Except for the first and last classes, sessions will take place outdoors. There will be light hiking at each of the outdoor sessions. Scheduled topics will include birds, wildflowers, soil and geology, aquatics, forestry, mammals and habitats, astronomy, and environmentalists through history. Registration is $170 per person. If a couple is willing to share resources, they can register at a discounted rate of $250 per couple. Participants will receive a resource, such as a field guide, at each class. The local master naturalist committee has worked hard to develop a program that is safe and educational. It will allow participants to complete all sessions and begin their quest to become certified master naturalists. Most sessions have been moved outdoors to immerse the participants in a setting related to the session topic, while

Grace College welcomes Hansen to ‘What’s Next Day’ The Grace College Student Chapter of the Council for Exceptional Children will host the seventh-biennial “What’s Next Day” from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11, at Grace College Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center. This is an opportunity for high school students with disabilities to explore post-secondary options available in the community. The event will begin with a keynote address by Brant Hansen. He is an author, nationallysyndicated radio host and advocate for healing children with correctible disabilities through CURE International. Hansen
addresses issues of public policy, culture, sports, faith and Asperger’s syndrome, which he has been diagnosed with. Following the keynote address, students will visit a transition exhibition. This is where area agencies, educational institutions and businesses will have display booths for opportunities and resources available as the students plan for post-graduation. Students will conclude the day with lunch at Alpha Dining Commons with members of the Grace College CEC chapter who plan and execute the event for more than 200 students in the community.

Jenna Parker, CEC president and facility and event major at Grace, has played a major role in pulling the event together. “‘What’s Next Day’ really encompasses all aspects of our CEC chapter’s mission. I am excited for our campus to join the high schoolers in listening to Hansen’s keynote address during the chapel hour. All of us from CEC are excited to have fun with those who attend, as well as encourage and show love to them,” said Parker. “What’s Next Day” is the culmination of the school’s campuswide Disability Awareness Week. During the course of the week, students on campus will have the opportunity to hear stories from those with disabilities at chapels and engage in meaningful conversations at a lunch question and answer session. One of the focal points of the week is a student-led fundraiser for Mason Metzger, a Warsaw native. He was diagnosed with spastic cerebral palsy at the age
of 1. Grace students are helping him raise money for a van, which vocational rehabilitation services have agreed to convert charge free. “Having this mobility will be a life-changing gift to Mason, who is preparing to graduate from college this spring,” said Dr. Cheryl Bremer, dean of the School of Education. “I’m so proud of our students at Grace and their initiative to be the hands and feet of Christ to meet a tangible need in this way.” To learn more about Grace College School of Education, visit www. grace.edu/academics/undergraduate/ academic-schools-departments/school-ofeducation.

Ivy Tech hosts high school students Ivy Tech Community College recently welcomed nearly 60 sophomore students from Warsaw Community High School as part of the Johnson and Johnson’s Bridge to Employment program. It is sponsored locally by DePuy Synthes, the orthopaedics company of Johnson and Johnson. During the event, students toured Warsaw’s campus, the OAMTC center, spoke with instructors, and engaged in hands-on activities. They were exposed to high-demand programs offered at Ivy Tech, like health sciences, advanced manufacturing, general studies and business administration. “Ivy Tech Warsaw is privileged to be a local higher education partner in the BTE program, and we were excited to host the BTE-Warsaw cohort’s first college tour. We know students walked away with a greater understanding of dual-credit opportunities and the many ways that Ivy Tech can help them get started earning a high-value career credential or a transferable degree,” said Allyn Decker, vice chancellor of Ivy Tech, Warsaw. The program is designed to help students develop essential skills for successful careers through academic enrichment, career exploration and post-secondary education planning. The BTE program focuses on an array of STEM2D pathways within the health care industry, but strengthens students’ pathways regardless of academic or professional interest through a mentorship program with 30 DePuy Synthes mentors. Ivy Tech, as the first collegiate visit, inspired

Purdue hosting workshop for the next generation of farmland seekers Ready to grow your farm operation, but unsure how to acquire more land? Farmland for the Next Generation program, currently being offered by Purdue Extension, will help you achieve your land acquisition goals. Farmland for the Next Generation is an interactive program series that addresses three paths to land access: leasing, purchasing, and receiving land through inheritance or gift. It utilizes a skills-based approached focusing on what people need to be able to do, not just on what they need to know. This five-session virtual workshop series will be offered from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Feb. 21 to March 21. Purdue Extension educators and industry professionals will be presenting a variety of topics throughout the sessions, which will help achieve land acquisition goals.
Some of the topics covered include: • Financial readiness. • Paths to land access. • Finding farmland. • Assessing farmland suitability. The registration fee for this workshop is $50. Individuals wanting to participate in this virtual workshop can sign up at https://tinyurl.com/FarmNext22. The deadline for registration is Feb. 14. This curriculum was created by the American Farmland Trust, supported by a four-year educational enhancement grant from the USDA Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development program. For more information, or if you need a reasonable accommodation to participate in this program, contact Kathryn Weiss at (219) 285-8620, ext. 2800 or weiss44@ purdue.edu prior to the program.

Echoes of Past ushers in new officers, board members %\ &+5,67,1$ 025(+286( (FKRHV RI WKH 3DVW After cancelling the banquet last year due to COVID, Echoes of Past Club decided to proceed with this year’s banquet after much consideration. Fun and fellowship was had by all in attendance with a few fun surprises along the way. The evening kicked off with social hour before digging into a delicious carry-in dinner. After dinner, outgoing President Thames Goon, who has served the club in some capacity for 15 years, had a surprise visitor and was serenaded by a giant “banana.” Following the serenade, the club welcomed guest speaker Stephanie Overbey, CEO of Kosciusko County Community Foundation. She presented a wealth of information to the club on endowments and how to bequest money to nonprofit organization. Her knowledge of the foundation and its benefits was very enlightening and well received. Before commencing in the fun of our white elephant gift exchange and trivia game for the evening, it was time to announce the results of our election and name the club’s honorary member for 2021, Kyle Miller. The club appreciates all the hard work and dedication Miller provides to enhance Echoes of the Past’s purpose and his help in making our events such a success. Miller is a volunteer fireman, the chaplain for Kosciusko County Fireman’s Association, and now an honorary member of Echoes of the Past. The members of the club voted in new club President Randy Runkle and new Vice President Dan Ransbottom. Melinda Miller and Jackie Clase will continue as secretary and treasurer respectively. New board of director members, Duane Harman and Keith Young, will join Tom Groninger, Jessica Joy and Rodney Keirn to round out the advisory board.
