From the executive editor Greetings glo readers, In a world where life moves at an ever-increasing pace, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle, often forgetting the importance of gratitude. It is not just a fleeting emotion; it’s a profound appreciation for the people, moments, and blessings that enrich our lives. It reminds us to recognize the beauty in the ordinary, the significance in the everyday, and the value of human connection. Practicing gratitude can serve as a guiding light, grounding us in the present and reminding us of the richness of our lives. As a mom, I want my children to be grateful for the blessings in our lives, and I try to model it every day. Earlier this year, I started a new habit with my oldest daughter—each night, we take turns telling each other what we are grateful for. Sometimes the list is short:
Shop Local ........................................................................................................ 26
“I am grateful we got to go outside for recess today and that they served cake with lunch.”- My daughter
HOME LIVING

And sometimes it is longer. But always, it is a time to connect and express appreciation. In today’s fast-paced world, where technology, materialism, and constant stimulation often take center stage, the concept of gratitude might seem elusive, particularly for children. However, it is crucial to impart the value, as it can shape their character and set them on a path toward a more fulfilled and empathetic life. As you read this issue, I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on the things you’re grateful for. In doing so, you’ll be joining us in celebrating this fundamental human experience that can bring joy, healing, and a deeper connection to the world around us. Together, we can cultivate a brighter, more compassionate, and harmonious world. With heartfelt appreciation for you,

Hometown: Columbia City, IN Where do you draw inspiration from in general for your work? Most of my inspiration comes from capturing childlike wonder in everyday moments. Most of our life is spent living so fast that we miss the stillness of a foggy morning. By focusing on the unexpected, captured in vivid colors reflected in light, it brings the viewer a moment of pause. However, my greatest inspiration is the Creator; painting brings peace and joy.
What is your medium you prefer? Experimenting with like mediums to achieve the unexpected.

Title of piece: Autumn Reflections What inspired this piece?
It was a combination of my love of landscapes; vivid colors; and an expression of my love for my big sister, who she is and how I see her. I am always looking to portray nature’s beauty in a way that leaves you in awe. I wanted to reflect the strength of the trees, in contrast to the light dancing off the stream. As the eye is drawn down, it brings you into the painting.

GLAM + STYLE | Fashion
Clothing Subscription By Kristin King
The popularity of online shopping is at an all-time high for its ease and variety of options. Although, with the vast inventory that most online stores carry, it can also be a bit of a headache to sift through page after page to find the perfect look. That’s where clothing subscription boxes come in, taking away the hassle in exchange for carefully curated selections from trained stylists who have your sense of style in mind. We looked at a few of the more highly rated companies, such as Stitch Fix, Wantable, and Dia & Co., to see what they have to offer and what customers can expect from their first order.
How to begin:
Stitch Fix
Each company boasts large offerings of designer and casual brands to dress yourself from head to toe, starting with tops, jackets, bottoms, dresses, shoes, and even rounding out an outfit with jewelry, scarves, and handbags.
Stitch Fix has a large offering of clothing and accessories from 1,000+ brands, such as Madewell, Free People, Calvin Klein, and Good American. Prices range from affordable to high end, but customers have noted that many of the items sent to them are on the more expensive side.
To begin the process, you’ll take a 5-minute style quiz that gets into the nitty gritty of what you want, as well as sizing and fit preferences. They ask about clothing length, if you prefer loose or fitted, are there areas of your body you’d like to emphasize or draw attention away from? They are all fairly comprehensive surveys that take into consideration your style, as well as your needs, even breaking down which patterns and colors you prefer or wish to avoid entirely. There are maternity options, as well as plus and petite, with sizes ranging from XS3XL for Stitch Fix and Wantable. After your survey is complete, you can choose your delivery date and the frequency of your orders, choosing to receive a box once a week, once a month, or every 2-3 months. Your stylist will handpick your items and you’ll have a limited try-on period to make your decisions and return what didn’t work. You can offer feedback to your stylist on their selections to keep fine-tuning your subscription to meet your needs. You pay for what you keep and return the rest free of charge. Most companies also give 25% off when customers choose to keep their entire box.

Style price: $20 Free shipping & returns? Yes Size range: XS-3X Try-on period: 3 days Items per shipment: 5
Wantable Wantable includes 7 items in their boxes and customers have noted that their stylists are more accommodating to feedback. Wantable’s style quiz had more detailed questions, as well as images of the styles and fits, which was helpful and had a more personalized touch.

Dia & Co. Dia & Co. is the most body-inclusive of the listed subscriptions and they offer more unique box selections, such as one-time seasonal curations (Fall, Back to School, etc.) They also allow customers to view and edit their cart before shipment.
Style Price: $20 Free Shipping? Yes Size Range: 10-32 Try-on period: 5 days (but can extend if necessary) Items per shipment: 5 Another option for those looking to lower their clothing waste or avoid fast fashion, is the company Rent the Runway, which allows customers to rent premium designer items starting at $30 with no subscription needed. They have casual looks, as well as stunning options for special occasions. You can keep your wardrobe fresh without breaking the bank or flooding your closet with items you’ll never wear again. Whether it’s a subscription box, a few new items, or a rental outfit, take the headache out of shopping while also homing in on your personal style with the help of services, such as Stitch Fix, Wantable, Dia & Co., or Rent the Runway. a

COMMUNITY FOCUS | SHE glows
KATHY ROUDEBUSH By Jennie Renner | Photo by Eva Toscos
In 2020, after being a lawyer for 33 years, Kathy Roudebush stopped actively practicing law. However, if you get to know her, it doesn’t take long to discover that she’s anything but “retired.” Using her experience as a nonprofit board member and volunteer, along with her expertise as a lawyer, Roudebush created a consulting firm called Board Brilliant. “Because I served on so many nonprofit boards and saw some of the challenges that existed there, I got certified as a governance trainer with BoardSource,” she said. She is continuing her education through a program at the Kellogg School Center for Nonprofit Management at Northwestern University in Chicago. In this second act in her career, Roudebush is focusing on board training and making it more accessible and efficient for today’s world. She said she wants to reignite passion in board members. “I think sometimes as board members, we love the organization when we come in and then we sort of get lost in board service,” she said. And Roudebush definitely knows what she’s talking about when it comes to serving on a board. “I think I counted,” she said, “I’ve been on about 30 boards in Fort Wayne.” Some of the boards Roudebush has served on include Super Shot, Healthier Moms and Babies, Fort Wayne Museum of Art, Fort Wayne Ballet, Junior League, Erin’s House, Friends of the Parks, Three Rivers Food Co-Op, and the YWCA, to name a few. Roudebush believes in lots of causes but is really passionate about the work she does for animals. She is a longtime volunteer and former board member at a statewide organization called GRRACE, Golden Retriever Rescue and Community Education. Dogs have played an integral role in Roudebush’s life. Last summer, she adopted a golden retriever puppy named Wendell from Humane Fort Wayne. She said he is a sweet and loving dog, but he can get nervous and bark when he’s out. She has been working with Wendell using positive association training. “I think we’ve made a lot of progress in how we understand working with pets, making them more comfortable and safe as they learn how to exist in our world,” she said. “I think we’ve asked a lot of animals.” Roudebush is currently serving as the immediate past chair of the board at Humane Fort Wayne and the chair of the capital campaign for the new facility the agency is building on Leesburg Road. “There’s a million things I’m proud of about Humane Fort Wayne,” said Roudebush. “But the social services – the Pet Promises program – is just awe-inspiring.” Pet Promises connects pet owners to resources that help them keep their pets in their homes. Roudebush is passionate about ensuring that nobody must give up their pets because they can’t afford to care for them, or they have a temporary housing or medical crisis. “If you are enduring poverty or displacement, something that gives you unconditional love, like a pet, may be the linchpin that keeps you hanging on,” said Roudebush. “No one should be deprived of the unconditional love of a pet simply for economic reasons… that relationship is pretty sacred to me.” a 10 | NOVEMBER GLO 2023 |

MATTHEW PLETT By Holli Hattery| Photo by Leaha Meinika
Chances are if you’ve been downtown Fort Wayne recently, you’re familiar with Matthew Plett’s work. Plett, a local artist, graphic designer, and muralist, is leaving his mark on the area with his inspirational and creative murals around town. Originally from Kansas, Plett and his family moved around a lot until they landed in Indiana when he was ten. Always interested in art, Plett’s mother encouraged his imagination and creativity. His parents, who are creative in their own right, inspired him in ways they probably don’t even know. “I don’t ever remember being exceptional at ‘art’ until most kids just stopped making it anymore,” he shared. “I just never stopped making ‘pointless things’ that I liked.” A freelancer for fifteen years now, Plett gets to work on various things that he’s passionate about, such as lettering, illustration, design, painting, and whatever else is meaningful to him, and gets to work on projects that also allow him to earn money. Plett has painted murals at Electric Works, Marian University, and in Downtown Fort Wayne, but his art isn’t just local; he has design work all over the country. Plett’s first mural was one you may be familiar with, titled, “Don’t Give Up,” which was an opportunity offered to him by Wunderkammer Company, just a few blocks from his house. “I had a moment I still remember where I realized, ‘my kids will see this like every day growing up. My neighbors, friends, people who are going through all parts of the deep rough stuff in life and the highs and all the in-betweens,’” Plett said. Plett also has a mural, “Breathe,” which is located on the wall of the Midtowne Crossing Condominiums just off Wayne Street in the alley. He’s also designed posters for the local music festival Middle Waves and completed a mural for Design Collaboratives. “Murals can’t help but affect people. I’ve had people tell me the most beautiful stories about how something I’ve created has connected with them and the burst of energy that gives to a creator is exponentially inspiring,” he said. “And I can say, those stories have given me strength to keep making even when it’s been nearly impossible.” As far as his art as a way to express himself, Plett feels like everyone else, he’s just trying to figure out life and his true self. “I think authenticity to myself and the people I’m close to is a main part of my work... I think that one of the main reasons I’m here is to figure out who I am, but also to encourage others to go there too. I hope my work can give people permission to go where they need to,” Plett shared. For aspiring artists who may be struggling or feeling defeated, Plett encourages them to be creative and not be discouraged if their path looks different than others. He also encourages artists to share their work and ask advice from everyone. 12 | NOVEMBER GLO 2023 |

NINA PENNY Age: 21 By Stacie Ball | Photo by Eva Toscos
“A mouse is small and can go unnoticed: but there is no limit to what a brave heart and a fearless spirit can achieve.” -Brian Jacques. Indiana Tech student Nina Penny is poised and ready to discover where her brave heart and fearless spirit will lead. The Chicago native has achieved so much already, including an opportunity at a cancer-focused undergraduate research experience. There is nothing “mousy” about where her positive attitude and determination will take her. Penny was selected to participate in the Northwestern University CURE Program. “It is an eight-week program that places college students in research labs on the Northwestern Campus in Chicago to participate in biological and medical research,” she explained. During the eight-week program, they researched Vibrio vulnificus, a bacterium that can enter the body through raw seafood or open wounds and cause life-threatening illnesses. “I performed a mating procedure with V. vulnificus and Escherichia coli,” she continued and was then able to observe and document the behaviors of the infected mice. The biology major on the veterinary professional track was able to participate in bioinformatics courses, seminars, and skill development classes while attending the CURE Program. She was excited to connect with a lab veterinarian to observe two pig acute kidney injury surgeries and mice check-ins. On campus in Fort Wayne, Penny participates in several activities, such as being captain of the reserve volleyball team, score bookkeeper for the men’s and women’s varsity games, a lab assistant for the biology labs, and a Presidential Scholar. As president of Warriors for Kids, she helps the on-campus organization raise funds for Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis. Recently, she became a member of the Advisory Board for the College of Arts and Sciences. “I could never do everything without my family,” Penny admitted when asked how she manages everything. She described her mom, her role model, as “one of the smartest people you’ll ever meet.” As Chief Nursing Officer of St. Bernard Hospital, Penny’s mom has shown her how to have a great work ethic, create plans, and make life exciting. Her dad, “One of the funniest people you’ll ever meet,” coached her in sports and stress management. “He showed me how a good laugh can take your mind off anything,” she mused. “Athletics are so much more than a ball or a stick. They teach valuable lessons of teamwork, dedication, focus, and time management; all essential for student-athletes on and off the court.” Penny creates work/life balance with a good book, especially fantasy books and comics. She is captivated by watching shows and movies or reading about the Marvel and D.C. universes. Whether working with mice or men, Penny is embracing the life skills to accomplish great things for our community. She inspires those who dare to don a brave heart and a fearless spirit. a 14 | NOVEMBER GLO 2023 |

Cultivate a Lifestyle of Gratitude By Casey Auer
What if you were told that gratitude is not an emotion, but a choice? Of course, there are moments throughout life that can create such sudden warm bursts of utter gratefulness – hearing “I do” on your wedding day, receiving life changing financial help, escaping a close call unscathed, meeting your child for the first time – and it is in these moments that you get flooded with all the fuzzy feelings that make you feel like the luckiest person in the world. But what if you could feel that way every day? Although it may take some practice, incorporating some of these simple daily habits may help you cultivate a lifestyle of gratitude:
1. Gratitude Affirmations Gratitude Affirmations are an easy, surefire way to start and end your day on a positive note. Before the day even gets the chance to set your mood, start your morning by stating three things you are grateful for. Whether your list consists of items as simple as having a good night’s sleep or waking to the smell of fresh coffee, stating three things you are thankful for out loud will help establish a congenial mindset for the rest of the day. For good measure, implement the same habit before going to bed. Even if your day was not the best, try to find three small things that kept you going. Over time, it will become easier to spot those little fragments of gratitude peppered throughout your daily life.
2. Gratitude Journal A Gratitude Journal may be a fun and creative way to serve as your appreciation memory bank. A gratitude journal allows you to go into as much detail as you please about certain moments that made an
18 | NOVEMBER GLO 2023 |
impact on you. They also serve as a beneficial payoff on those days when you are having a hard time finding things to be grateful for. Sometimes revisiting past accounts that brought you joy can remind you that you had, have, and will continue to have memories that make your life sparkle.
3. Pay It Forward Paying It Forward does not always equate to draining your wallet. While it is a pleasant surprise to have the person in front of you in the coffee drive-thru pay for your coffee, paying it forward can often cost you just a moment of your time. If someone compliments you and it makes you feel good, be a piece in the kindness domino effect and remember to compliment another.
4. Acts of Kindness Acts of Kindness for Your family and friends are a wonderful way to show your gratitude toward the people who have been steadfast allies in your life. Best practice for acts of kindness is to not wait until a favor is asked, but to be proactive and attentive. Offer to babysit so your friends can have a date night, give your bestie flowers at random, bring your sibling soup if they’re sick. These simple acts of showing your family and friends that you are thinking about them assist in kindling a relationship of love and appreciation. a

Leave the buzz behind The sobriety movement goes mainstream By Julie Young
Do you overindulge during the holiday season? Has your social drinking become more of an everyday occurrence? Are you tired of the effect alcohol has on your overall health and well-being? If so, then perhaps you should become “sober curious.” Making mindful choices Born out of the UK’s “Dry January” public health initiative that gained traction in the U.S., the sober curious movement is designed to help people reset and rethink their relationship to alcohol. It is not a 12step program, nor is it for those with serious alcohol-related dependency issues. In fact, it doesn’t require participants to abstain from alcohol. Rather, it encourages folks in the “gray area,” or those who imbibe more than a moderate amount, to re-examine their alcohol usage and make mindful choices to improve their physical and mental health. It’s no secret that throughout the pandemic, folks turned to the bottle in record numbers. Folks who considered themselves “social drinkers” but began to make alcohol part of their daily routine and now want to make a change. Studies show that a 30-day separation from alcohol can be a rewarding experience while also having a tremendous effect on one’s health. Those who embrace the sobriety movement can expect to gain greater mental clarity and focus, better and more restful sleep, more energy and stamina, a healthier immune system, and an improved ability to manage weight loss.
Being sober curious also offers folks the chance to create new habits, engage in new activities and explore lifestyle alternatives that do not rely on the presence of alcohol. Although it does not have to be a permanent change or even a strict no drinking policy, it can be a springboard for a healthier lifestyle.
Success strategies If you are ready to become sober curious, there are several tips that can help get you succeed. Start by creating a timeframe to be sober and extend that time if you find that it works. (“Dry January” is a popular time after the holiday season.) If you don’t want to stop drinking altogether, consider cutting back or setting a limit for yourself to create new parameters. Choose a sober curious buddy and engage in new social activities that do not involve drinking. If you find yourself around alcohol, choose a “mocktail” to drink instead. Also, practice how you will decline a drink when it is offered without sounding preachy or judgmental about those who are drinking. Above all, keep your mind on your mission and the benefits of staying sober rather than giving in to FOMO. If you do have a drink during your planned sobriety period, don’t beat yourself up over it. Start again the next day and get back on your personal program. Remember, moderation is worth it! a

When to Go to the ER
– A Quick Guide for Worried Parents
By Mary Jane Bogle
It’s going on midnight. Your toddler has been fussy all day, and now she’s spiking a fever. Is it time to bundle her up and head to the ER? Or are you just overreacting?
You can also take off your child’s shirt and watch her chest. If she’s using all the muscles in her abdominal cavity to pull in air, she’s really struggling to breathe. Head to the ER now. And if her skin turns grey, call 911.
It’s a scenario all parents face. After all, children are accident and illness prone. To make matters worse, they often can’t accurately describe their symptoms, making the decision on how to care for them confusing at best, terrifying at worst.
3. Does your child have stomach pain? If that pain occurs in just one spot, typically off center, and is accompanied by a low fever, vomiting, loss of appetite, or nausea, your child might be experiencing appendicitis and will need immediate care.
So how do you know when to rush to the ER — or even call 911 — and when to visit the doctor or go to an urgent care center? Here are a few quick questions to ask when deciding when and where to go for medical attention:
4. Could your child be having an allergic reaction? Breaking out in hives or experiencing a skin rash is one thing, but if the circulation or breathing is affected, you need to get to the ER. Listen for a high-pitched sound when your child is breathing, and keep a close watch on skin color, especially if your child turns pale and dizzy, perhaps with blue lips — a sign that blood pressure is dropping. In that case, don’t get in the car. Call 911.
1. What’s her temperature? The answer on whether to head to the ER depends on your child’s age. If your baby is younger than four weeks and has a temperature of 100.4 degrees or higher, head to the ER. A temperature of 100.4 degrees or higher in a baby less than four months old warrants an emergency visit if she’s acting fussy or eating less. For older kids, head to the ER for a fever over 104, especially if they aren’t responding to fever-reducing medication. And a fever in any child accompanied by symptoms, such as abnormal appearance or breathing, or pain and difficulty moving, requires immediate medical attention. 2. How’s her breathing? Does she sound as if she just ran a marathon, but she hasn’t been exercising all day? Do you notice any wheezing? If so, you might need an expert’s help. Don’t just listen, either. If your child’s skin has a blue or purplish tone, she’s not getting enough oxygen and will need immediate care.
20 | NOVEMBER GLO 2023 |
5. Has your child had an impact injury or fall? This is a tough one. As a rule of thumb, head to the ER if you suspect a concussion (look for confusion, trouble dilating, or vomiting), or if you think there’s a broken bone. The ER staff can expedite your care and put you in touch with an orthopedic surgeon if necessary. Other symptoms that might warrant a trip to the ER include severe dehydration, loss of consciousness, seizures, and bleeding you can’t stop. For other symptoms, such as cold or cough, a fever that doesn’t meet the threshold listed above, rashes, or diarrhea, urgent care is best, especially if you can’t get in to see your pediatrician or family doctor. You can always take advantage of telehealth options as well, either through your family doctor or insurance provider. And sometimes, you just need to trust your instincts. When in doubt, go. a

FEATURE | We Love Your Style
We Love Your Style By Amber Bouthot
Each month, we highlight someone whose style we admire. This month, it’s Lyndsy Rae Porter, She is a homeschool mom, plant mom, French teacher, master gardener, and a master naturalist. She and her husband, Ben, are both fluent in French and are both musicians in local bands. Ben is a builder and carpenter who makes most of her ideas come to life. She and Ben, her stepdaughter Rayn, and their sons Rew Jupiter and Oliver fill the home with love and laughter.
How would you describe your style? Our style is very much modern Boho.
LYNDSY RAE PORTER
Our children’s room sparks growth, exploration, and learning. The basement studio, sparks music and creativity for us. The grand, black and white sunroom represents our dreams for our family. So much hard work came to life. A sketch on a piece of paper is now a room we call home.
Our studio is definitely rocking the bohemian vibe. It’s a beautiful place to create. The different colored rugs make it feel like you’re on a magic carpet ride as you’re playing music and digging down deep for song and sound. It has such a warm sound down there. It’s an honor to give art and beautiful instruments a space of their own. A lot of love went into this space. It looked like a creepy, dungeon when we first moved in 10 years ago, and now it looks just as we dreamed it would. Our black and white grand room was a new addition two years ago as we were starting to outgrow our home, and it has been perfect for homeschooling, as we all can spread out more. The big, long table was a dream realized. I always wanted a table like this with family around it learning and sharing. Now here it is. Every part of this room Ben and I worked together to design. The whole house addition made it so that we can stay in the home of our dreams.
Tell us a little about each of the areas of your home you chose to highlight. My favorite room in the whole house is the boys’ bedroom. It strikes so much joy and excitement for me as I am so honored to be able to give my boys such a dreamy place to have as a backdrop for their childhood. Our living room is very colorful and cheery with low ceilings and arches that give it a warm, hobbit hole comfort. It’s inspired by our travels to North Africa, Mexico, France, and Italy with its vibrant and vivacious, decor and colors. 22 | NOVEMBER GLO 2023 |
Why did you choose them?
Our living room was the first room that we walked into and fell in love with, and we’ve been able to paint it our favorite colors and fill it with treasures from far away places, making it our own. It’s the OG room with an enchanting Mosaic fireplace that strikes conversation right when you walk in the door. When you think of your home, what’s the feeling you hope your family and visitors have? We often hear people say that they feel like they are welcome to be who they are, as they are. They don’t feel like they must act a certain way or perform. I love that people feel like they can come as they are. We want everybody to feel like they are enough just as they are. We want people to feel true, unconditional love and welcomed when they are in our home. This life is hard, and we want our home to be a space for people to escape the challenges of our busy world. Friends and family know that if the curtains are open, you’re welcome to swing by.
What’s your favorite color?

Fraud Prevention
The prevalence of fraud and scams is growing at an alarming rate. From identity theft to phishing emails and phone scams, it seems no one is immune to the dangers of bad actors lurking in the shadows. Yet, several common myths persist, leading many to believe they are safe from such threats. Complacency can spell trouble and opportunity for people with bad intentions.
often spoof phone numbers to impersonate banks, companies, or government agencies. For this reason, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
David Greenwood, fraud investigation manager at STAR Financial, has seen it all in his tenure. Before joining the bank, he worked as a police officer investigating financial crimes. As such, he wants to protect consumers from falling prey to these crimes. It all starts with being informed.
Phone calls from parties claiming to be from financial entities can create confusion and panic. When in doubt, hang up and contact the institution directly from their official website or the number on your card. Your financial institution can help you determine next steps.
One of the most pervasive myths is the belief that fraud only happens to specific demographics. The truth is fraud knows no boundaries and can affect anyone. Whether young or old, rich or working class, you’re a potential target for scammers. “Understanding that we all are targets for scammers and fraudsters is the first step in dispelling that myth,” said Greenwood.
“Be careful as it relates to links within text messages and email,” he said. “If you aren’t expecting an email or text from someone you know, don’t click any links.”
Greenwood advises consumers to be equally skeptical of emails that purportedly relate to their personal finances. “[Watch out for] emails relating to recent charges to your payment cards that you don’t recognize,” he said. “Again, do not call phone numbers listed in these emails. Consider checking your account online to see if there is a charge on your account. You will likely learn that this is an email phishing scam.”
Consumers can also be part of the solution, according to Greenwood. Another common myth is that reporting fraud to law enforcement is a waste of time. While it’s true that seeking justice can be dicey due to jurisdictional issues, reporting fraud is crucial. It helps identify patterns, track down offenders, possibly recover funds and prevent others from falling victim to the same scam. Doing so also empowers and educates others about protecting their financial and digital identities, he added.
Finally, Greenwood said the best defense is good offense. Consumers should be intentional in fraud prevention by regularly monitoring accounts and obtaining a copy of their credit report annually. In his estimation, frequent monitoring can reveal any suspicious activity.
Speaking of protection, Greenwood said consumers should be on alert when it comes to specific scams that can lure them into getting their personal information compromised. For example, scammers

What’s in your
The topic of dust may be one of the least liked and most timeconsuming aspects of housekeeping. It’s also easy to put on the back burner. We’ve named dust bunnies like they’re pets. But ignoring dust is a mistake, according to Princy Hart of Hart & Schmitt Designs, professional organizers and home re-designers.
dust?
Dust furniture and ceiling fans.
Clean fan blades with pillowcases to catch dust. “Dust contains chemical particles, including pesticides and other dangerous substances found in your home,” Hart said. “Exposure to these can cause long-term health problems. Dust in the air will eventually collect in your home’s ductwork. There, it attracts mold growth and contributes greatly to poor indoor air quality. Dust particles small enough to be inhaled may lead to: irritation of the eyes, coughing, sneezing, hay fever, and asthma attacks. “Fortunately, there are a number of steps you can take to address dust,” Hart said. Solutions can start with the way your home is designed, such as choosing flooring that is not carpet. But if changing your home isn’t an option, you can still make a significant difference by using a number of strategies.
What follows is a list to tack up on your refrigerator: • Launder sheets weekly and pillows should be washed periodically, too.
Brush blinds and clean curtains. Wipe the blinds from top to bottom with a microfiber towel. You can also use a vacuum cleaner attachment on a low setting to clean the dust from the windows.
Utilize a humidifier. It adds moisture to the air which prevents dryness and unnecessary respiratory issues.
Zip up fabrics. Store your unused clothes, bedding and pillows in vacuum-seal or regular garment bags. That way it’s not just sitting around your house collecting dust.
Tidy up closets. The more items the more places for dust to build up.
• Vacuum weekly with a HEPA filter (removes dust particles)
Edit the clutter in your home.
• Use an air purifier & maintain clean filters (removes airborne particles, including pollen, mold, and bacteria.)
Piles of books, paper, and other clutter sitting around your home contributes to the dust in your home.
• Dust with microfiber cloths
Remove your shoes.
• Keep your houseplants clean
Most of the dirt and dust that enters your home comes in on shoes.
• If you have pets, groom them in an easy-to-clean space
If this seems like a lot, try to tackle a little at a time. Your home will not only look better but you will be healthier, as well, so the rewards are great. Perfection isn’t possible. Find what works for you. a
Overall home maintenance tips: Wipe down walls and ceilings with microfiber towels. Start from the top and work your way down. Cleaning from top to bottom ensures that dust particles don’t fall from the ceiling onto lower surfaces that have already been cleaned. 28 | NOVEMBER GLO 2023 |

StaycationUnique Ideas: Local Rentals By Lindsey Sharp
We all know and love northeast Indiana—why not take the opportunity for a lil’ staycation? We’re rounding up a few local staycation spots each month for you and your family to enjoy.
This month, we’re highlighting two unique properties: a stunning, newly updated Craftsman four-square home in New Haven and an “Animal House”-themed time capsule home in Fort Wayne.
New Haven 5-Bedroom Retreat
What inspired this property?: “For years we’ve stayed in rentals with friends and family when we travel and we also have friends and family from out of town who visit regularly,” said owner Molly Graves, who owns it with her husband Sam. “We know how the conveniences of home can enhance your travel experience, and so we had our loved ones in mind when working on this property — we wanted it to be a memorable experience for guests!” Perfect for: Memory making with friends and family Unique features: A perfect blend of modern sophistication and warm, inviting ambiance away from the hustle and bustle of the “big city,” while being only a short drive away from all its fun. Nearby fun: Family friendly activities for all ages: The Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo, the Historic Old Fort, Fox Island County Park, Parkview Field Capacity: 11 guests (option to rent 4 or 5 bedrooms with 7 beds total) Length of stay: Short-term For more information or to book, scan here:
Fawn Liebowitz’ Childhood Home What inspired this property?: “It has always been kind of the
dream — Fawn Liebowitz’s [from ‘Animal House’] childhood home,” owner Mike Kelly said. “So I thought, ‘The movie is set in ‘62, so I want to find a mid-century modern built before ‘62 that kinda fit what their family would have been like … and I wanted to make it a fun ‘staycation’ thing, so there’s a lot of fun Fort Wayne references here too.” Perfect for: Date nights in with friends and all “Animal House” fans Unique features: Based on the character Fawn Liebowitz from the movie “Animal House,” this mid-century modern home is intentionally curated to represent what Fawn’s childhood home likely looked like, complete with movie memorabilia and an interactive movie-themed scavenger hunt for guests. r e s s e r D d e h s i n i f e R What inspired this piece?
My inspiration for this piece was my dad. His favorite color was blue, and he had a love for hunting and the outdoors. When I was growing up, he taught me and my brother everything we know about doing it yourself and the meaning of hard work. We would help him build onto the house, and we were pretty much holding a hammer by the time we were toddlers. I refinished this piece in honor of him and called it the “big daddy” dresser. Dark walnut stain and camo drawer liners perfectly represented the man he was. I even used his belt as the handles to finish it off.
This month’s Reader DIY comes from Christine Clark, owner of Forgotten Gems Revival. She flips furniture on the side out of her garage and works part time at Homegoods. She loves creating something beautiful out of a piece that would just be tossed in the trash or never given a How long did it take you to complete? second look. It was definitely harder than I thought it would be.

What is the total cost of the project? Total cost was $350.
What did you like best about this project? The thing I loved most was uncovering what was beneath the old nasty boring finish! I couldn’t believe what I found; it was so beautiful. Another thing is being able to get creative and get out of my head to focus on something I really loved. I always have a vision of how it’s supposed to look but it’s not always an easy road to get there. I love figuring out the hurdles and learning at the same time.
What was the most challenging aspect? The most challenging part was probably rebuilding the bones on the inside. It needed drawer slides and supports, and I had absolutely no idea how to go about doing that. I watched a lot of YouTube videos and read a lot of articles. I got the job done and I definitely feel like it’s something I can be proud of.
Where did you source your materials and supplies?
Before
Stain markers, walnut stain, pre stain conditioner, mineral spirits, wood filler, nails, walnut gel stain, foam brushes, latex gloves, camo peel and stick wallpaper, 1x2x4’ boards, poly acrylic, bullseye primer, sanding blocks, and round bun feet are from Menards. Roller and Midnight Blue paint were fusion mineral paint and came from a shop in the antique mall on Coliseum Blvd. I ordered the wood drawer slides online. a

Beth Bobay McAvoy By Gabby Hunnicutt | Photo provided
Beth Bobay McAvoy, a child of Fort Wayne natives, grew up near Lakeside Park. She spent a lot of time downtown where her parents worked, although she doesn’t recall there being much to do in the area after five o’clock. She spent four years away from Fort Wayne, attending IU Bloomington. After graduation, she returned to Fort Wayne in search of a job at an easier pace of living. During that time, she was able to quickly get reacquainted with the city. Shortly after moving back, MacAvoy joined Young Leaders of Northeast Indiana (YLNI). Her involvement with the organization provided a lot of opportunities that ended up keeping her in Fort Wayne. By attending the organization’s social events, she was able to vastly expand her network. For her, YLNI was an eyeopening experience, allowing her to meet people outside of her normal circles and see how much the city had to offer. She joined committees, helped plan monthly Hot Spots, and later became a board member. “I grew in a different way in Fort Wayne than I ever could have imagined when I came back,” she said. “I had the experience of learning that Fort Wayne was maybe a smaller pond, but it’s easier to be a big fish.” Those leadership and project management skills gained in YLNI led to career opportunities for her. When she worked at One Lucky Guitar, she played an integral role in the marketing and communication efforts for major city staples like The Riverfront and The Landing. From her perspective, it has been fun to see those come to life, having been involved in the planning meetings years before both projects came to fruition. Having served on several nonprofit boards, as well as the Fort Wayne Community Development Board, she encourages others to get involved, saying that it’s a great way to make a difference but also to get career-relevant experience. When she settled on marketing as a career path, her parents were surprised, as they both had jobs serving the community. Growing up in Fort Wayne, McAvoy has seen how much the urban core of the city has expanded and how much more inviting the city has become. She hopes there continues to be growth that benefits everyone in the city, specifically no-cost or low-cost options like the Riverfront and TinCaps games. She now gets to enjoy everything that Fort Wayne has to offer with her husband and two young sons. Most recently, the family attended the Art this Way Art Crawl and got their groove on at the silent disco. By staying in the city where she grew up, and even moving back to the same neighborhood, it is safe to say that she has done her part to contribute to the vibrancy of Fort Wayne! a

39th Annual
Festival of Trees November 22-29, 2023
The Festival of Trees is one of the region’s most anticipated holiday traditions. The Embassy Theatre will host the 39th annual Festival of Trees from Wednesday, November 22 through Wednesday, November 29. This year, Ambassador Enterprises has returned as the event’s title sponsor. Founded in 1984, the Festival of Trees supports ongoing operational and restoration efforts for the Embassy Theatre Foundation. The festival is the organization’s largest annual fundraising event. Last year’s event presented over 60 lavishly decorated trees throughout the building, activating thousands of smiles filled with wonder and awe. The annual traditions at the festival continue in 2023. Lobbies of the Embassy Theatre and Indiana Hotel will transform into a wonderland of decorated trees of various sizes, shapes, and a broad array of themes. Admission includes visits with Santa (various dates and times) and festive entertainment on stage, including the Grande Page pipe organ as well as youth choir and dance performances. Breakfast with Santa is a community favorite and will take place Friday and Saturday of the festival. Cost for the breakfast will be $30 per person (reservation required, very limited seating). Breakfast with Santa is sponsored by Steel Dynamics. New this year; families can dance the night away at Santa’s Rockin’ Pizza Party on Tuesday, Nov 28.
