While the COVID-19 pandemic affected almost all aspects of our lives, things are reopening and businesses and individuals alike are proceeding with caution. Our hearts have been with our supporters and readers the past few months and we look forward with optimism—both that our supporters’ businesses are able to bounce back and our readers stay healthy. Unfortunately, we will be unable to host the glo Bash this year in August as planned. We do not feel that hosting a gathering that large is safe for attendees or vendors. Instead, the first week of August, we will host a virtual glo Bash with fun contests and daily giveaways. Be sure to like our Facebook page so you don’t miss it. Have no fear; glo Bash will be back in 2021. Amidst the hardships that COVID-19 has brought to our community are the Black Lives Matter protests taking place here and across the nation. As a publication devoted to shining a light on women in our community, we stand with black women as they stand up to injustice. We have been quiet. We have been listening. Our goal is to amplify black voices—from black artists and black business owners to black community leaders and more. Now, we need your help. Connect us with black women in our community, so we can share their stories. Email me anytime at ambouthot@the-papers.com.

Athleisure By Lauren Caggiano

Long gone are the days of wearing an old T-shirt and sweats to the gym. Today, form meets function in the world of athleisure. In simple terms, athleisure is sportswear that you can wear all the time, not just to the gym. A marriage of practicality and aesthetics, it’s no wonder why this booming industry keeps getting bigger.

shutters

tock.com

The popularity and availability of athleisure means there are more options than ever for going seamlessly from the gym to drinks with friends or just lounging around the house in style. According to Emma Marie Metcalf with Lyn-Maree’s Boutique, athleisure represents a great compromise when it comes to women’s fashion today.

“Athleisure wear can be difficult to rock and not just look like you’re headed to the gym, but anymore many of us want to be comfortable AND cute!” she said. “And you can totally be both! But you need to follow a few simple rules to make sure you look fabulous and not frumpy.” For one, she reminds readers of a harsh truth: leggings aren’t pants. “In order to wear them outside the gym or studio be sure and pair your leggings with a longer top or tie a long sleeve around your waist,” she said. Still, they can make for a great staple, especially when incorporating them with other pieces. Her advice? “Mix your everyday wardrobe in. Pair a blazer with your funky gym tee, high-waisted pants with your sports bra and a leather jacket. Rock a bomber and sneakers with your sheath dress. Try layering your high-waisted leggings and sports bra with a plaid button-up tied around your waist and topped with a leather jacket.” It’s sporty-meets-edgy at its best. The same applies to mixing and matching fabrics. For example, think leather and denim with sports fabrics. Of course, the particulars will depend on the occasion. As a rule, the more formal the occasion or location, the more put together your outfit should be. A casual event, however, can lend itself to a more functional ensemble. You can never go wrong with over-dressing. Another tip? When in doubt, accessorize. Don’t forget it doesn’t take much time to take your look from gym drab to post-workout fab. 8

| JULY GLO 2020 |

“Don’t forget you’re not at the gym; you’re out and about,” she said. “Grab some earrings, a simple layered necklace, a hat, handbag, etc.” Voila...instant chic! That said, Metcalf challenges women to hold themselves to high standards, even when casual apparel is becoming more of the norm. While it may be tempting to choose comfort over style, that doesn’t always send the right impression, especially if the stakes are high, like going on a first date. “Don’t throw on any old gym clothes,” she said. ‘Check out what’s new, stylish, trendy — make sure what you’re rocking is nice and clean.” Last, you can be bold, but not too bold. In her words, “Don’t go crazy with prints and patterns, simple classic colors and styles will go further in rockin’ athleisure wear on the streets.” a

The No

Makeup Look

By Stacie Ball

Getting frustrated trying to create the perfect cat eye or that elusive smoky eye? Great news! As lifestyles are becoming more relaxed, and more people are working from home, women are relaxing their cosmetic routines, too. So toss those dark eyeshadows and eyeliners to the back of the makeup drawer, because the “No Makeup Look” is back in style.

Step 1: PREPARE YOUR SKIN “Glowing, healthy skin is the start to creating the ‘No Makeup’ look,” said Tonya Andrews, Esthetician and Makeup Artist at 5 Elements. “Doing a skin care regimen day and night can make your skin healthy and hydrated, help calm irritated skin and balance oily skin types.” Makeup Artist at Southwest Hair Jade Jackson advised, “If you are a regular, full-on makeup wearer, first let go of all your habits. Start with step-by-step application to break the habit of a heavy makeup look.” Both artists mentioned that regular facials and dermaplaning are professional services that can help give your skin a healthy, hydrated look. Facials can help deep-clean skin, reduce pore size and more; while dermaplaning can remove vellus hairs or peach fuzz.

10

| JULY GLO 2020 |

Step 2: FACE PRIMER, FOUNDATION AND CONCEALER

Step 4: HIGHLIGHTER AND BLUSH

“Use a cream-based highlighter on the highest point of your cheeks to create a lifted, glowing look,” Andrews described. “To give the cheeks a natural look, apply a cream blush to the apple of the cheek and blend well towards the hairline.”

Step 5: LIPS AND EYES

“Primer will create smooth skin and it also helps makeup stay put and last longer,” Andrews explained.

“Use a lip gloss in a soft natural color,” said Andrews, “Add a little mascara to your lashes to make your eyes appear more open.”

Jackson stated, “Apply a natural-looking foundation like Mira Bella CC Cream and put a little concealer under the eyes and to cover blemishes.”

Jackson suggested using, “Luxe mascara with a little bronzer in the crease (of your eye) for definition.”

Step 3: CREATE A NATURAL BROW LOOK “Mirabella’s Brow Shaper is perfect for the natural brow look,” Jackson recommended, “It defines each hair.” “Shape brows and brush upward to get a lifted eye look,” Andrews instructed, “If you have full brows just use a clear brow gel. If you want to get a fuller look, use a brow gel that’s lightly tinted, making sure to comb the brows so they stay natural looking.”

For this look, remember, a little goes a long way. Both artists recommended leaving out heavy foundation, lots of powder, eyeliner, bold lipstick, matte lip gloss. and fake eyelashes. Both of these phenomenal ladies presented a wealth of knowledge beyond what this article could hold. a photos: shutterstock.com

CHERYL TAYLOR 12

| JULY GLO 2020 |

By Jaclyn Youhana Garver | Photo by Jeffrey Crane

Cheryl Taylor was supposed to go on four trips this year. After 30 years at Foellinger Foundation, it was time to celebrate retirement. Well, you know where this is going: One by one, each trip was cancelled due to the coronavirus. For the last 20 years, Taylor has been the president and CEO at Foellinger. She announced her May 31, 2020, retirement last June, but even that has been affected by the coronavirus. She now plans to stick around for at least two more months. Ester A. and Helene R. Foellinger, a mother-daughter duo, formed Foellinger Foundation in 1958. The foundation is a permanent philanthropic endowment, and Taylor takes her job overseeing that endowment—assuring funds are distributed fairly, to do the most good—seriously. “This is not my money,” she said. “No matter how long (the Foellingers have) been gone, my job is a stewardship job.” Point of pride Though Taylor has 30 years of achievements at the foundation, it doesn’t take her long to figure out what she’s most proud of: the Helene Foellinger Leadership Development Initiative, which trains nonprofit leaders and board members. “You can build buildings all day long. You can provide equipment all day long, but if you don’t have the people who care about their missions; if you don’t have the people who know how to best lead their organizations …” she said, trailing off. “This is the best thing we’ve ever done.” In 2016, the initiative kicked off a program specifically for CEOs, and Taylor remembers a win from about two years ago. After the participant was about halfway through the program, they realized, “I’m not cut out to be a CEO.” They were great at fundraising, but they didn’t want to supervise people or deal with the minutia of leadership like updating policy manuals. “That is a win for the person,” Taylor said. “That is a win for the organization.” Retirement to-dos In retirement, Taylor doesn’t exactly plan to be a retired person. For one, she will maintain her spot on Foellinger’s board, even after her presidency has ended. Plus, she’ll continue her membership on the Indiana Philanthropy Alliance and Indiana Parks Alliance boards. Ditto the Quest Club of Fort Wayne board and a new statewide commission she can’t yet discuss. She’ll write about philanthropy and nonprofits. She’ll read a lot. When we chatted in May, she was working on a collection of books: “Matterhorn: A Novel of the Vietnam War” and a book of essays by poet Mary Oliver. She just finished “The Great Influenza: The Story of the Deadliest Pandemic in History” and just started “Janis,” a biography of Janis Joplin. She loves murder mysteries. And she’ll garden. “No one would describe me as a Pollyanna, but I am trying to find some piece of joy each day” during the pandemic, she said. “It’s the simplest things. I watched the mallards in my backyard for a little bit this morning. I’m waiting for my grandmother’s peonies to bloom. I’ve been carting these plants around to every house I’ve owned for the last 35 years.”

UPDATE: Tapestry’s in-person event, which was rescheduled for August 28, has been cancelled due to COVID-19

Instead, Tapestry will host a week-long “Shop Tapestry” fundraiser event

AUGUST 24-28, 2020 Event will take place online, which will coincide with an online auction and special sponsor shopping promotions. Funds will still be used to support scholarships. MAGGIE PETERS

Age 16 By Stacie Ball | Photo by Mollie Shutt

High school student Maggie Peters knows positive thinking, passion and hard work are the seeds that must be planted to reap great rewards. Her efforts made it possible for her to receive the great honor of representing the USA in the 2020 Paralympic Swimming World Series in the 100m Freestyle, 100m Breaststroke, 50m Freestyle and 100m Butterfly. Disabled-world.com defined the Paralympics as “a multi-sport event for athletes with physical, mental and sensorial disabilities.” The Paralympics occur every four years after the Olympics, in the same location, and have become one of the most popular sporting events in the world. Peters started out as a cheerleader, but after thoughtful consideration around a campfire on a camping trip, she realized her heart was being set aflame for swimming. Soon after the camping trip, Peters signed up for swim club at Summit City Aquatics, and quickly found herself right at home in the water. Her coach, Stephanie, and her friend, Cali, helped her prepare for her very first adaptive sports meet, Turnstone’s First Endeavor Games.

Following the Endeavor Games, Peters began to try other sports. In the fall, she competed in the Paratriathlon through a Chicago organization called Dare2tri. In the winter, she was doing three sports at Turnstone in addition to her swim club. Soon, she was realizing her dreams of swimming in the Paralympic Nationals for three years. “To make the Paralympic team is a huge process,” Peters explained, “You have to make certain time standards, compete at events, and get asked to represent the US in the Paralympics.” And that’s just to make the USA team. To make the actual games, there are many other steps involved, such as completing paperwork, obtaining a passport, updating classification status, and making the actual games time standards. Unfortunately, the 2020 Paralympics have been postponed, but Peters still carries a torch for competing in many different sports. In addition to swimming, she also found a love for Track and Field. She enjoys participating in recreational programs like goalball and rowing. As mentioned above, she competes in a paratriathlon consisting of swimming, cycling and running. But how can she accomplish all this when she can’t even run for 20 minutes? She had simple and wise advice that can apply to almost any situation.

“A positive outlook is always helpful,” Peters insisted, “It makes you clear-headed and calm.” Even though the 2020 Paralympics were postponed, Peters has not given up hope. In five years, she anticipates attending college somewhere and either getting ready to compete or having already competed in the Paralympic Games. After seeing all that she has accomplished in 16 years, it’s exciting to see what she will tackle in the future. a

Blue Star Mothers Fort Wayne Area

By Barb Sieminski | Photo by Mollie Shutt

You’ll have to ask Mark Dixon about the 4-hour battle it took to land his swordfish off the Keys. “No way could I have done it alone, so I took three breaks and a deckhand helped,” said Dixon, a Seymour, Indiana native who has fished many different bodies of water. “I did a catchand-release so the fish was never totally out of the water. The captain thought he was somewhere between 250 and 300 pounds. Although a 125-pound halibut and a King Salmon in Alaska are also memorable, that ocean fish was my largest to date.” Dixon has been CEO of Matthew 25 Health & Dental Clinic for the last six years. The organization is the only full-time clinic in Allen County offering free medical, dental, vision and hearing services all under one roof. Before that, he retired from a Fortune 500 company and was serving on the Matthew 25 board when they needed someone to run the clinic. “I thought I would stay 6 months, but then I saw the great things the clinic did for the community and wanted to continue,” said Dixon who oversees general management, financial oversight, planning and organizational structure and, “sometimes handyman, plumber and carpenter,” he laughed. While Dixon won numerous honors with his former employers, his focus at Matthew 25 has largely been about “paying back for the many blessings I’ve received in my life.”

Other past employment has included sales with Johnson & Johnson and Becton-Dickinson. Dixon was also General Manager with General Medical, now McKesson, and Vicepresident and Global Leadership with Ecolab. Regarding his greatest career thrill, Dixon zeroed in on his time at Ecolab. “When I took the leadership role at Ecolab, the business was approximately $43 million in revenues; when I retired it was nearly $18 billion globally,” he said. “With that growth, I got to witness many people grow in their careers and I found that very satisfying.” Not everything is all work and no play; in his spare time, Dixon takes delight in fishing in his Tritoon or Ranger bass boat at Lake George. He also enjoys boating, woodworking and being with his family, including wife Karen, daughters Kelly Wright and Ashley Harris and 4 grandchildren. And Baxter, the couple’s 14-year-old Shih Tzu rules the Dixon household.

Growing up, Dixon, a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, wanted to be a pastor or a physician, “which changed frequently,” he admitted. “My time at Ecolab of more than 25 years was full of rewarding moments; however, my time at Matthew 25 has been remarkably satisfying, and the clinic helps so many that have nowhere else to turn.” Dixon has a special affinity for children who have diabetes. “I was diagnosed at age 9 with Type 1 diabetes, and because of this, I have tremendous compassion for the young children that contract the disease, as it can be challenging, especially in those formative years,” said Dixon, who concluded with his life’s philosophy: “Be kind to each other; we are all the same in God’s eyes.” a | JULY GLO 2020 |

Summer is here, and we couldn’t be more excited! Especially since we have been cooped up during quarantine, we are more ready than ever to get outside and have some fun. Due to COVID-19 and the fear of spreading the virus, many large events, festivals and concerts have been canceled or postponed. But do not fear, there are plenty of activities to keep you and your family busy this summer. NATURE WALKS + HIKES Explore local nature preserves and parks like Metea County Park, Salomon Farm Park, Franke Park and Fox Island, among others in our region. There are plenty of trails for every level of experience, and what better way to keep kids engaged in nature than a gorgeous hike through the woods or along the creeks? Consider making a list of things to look for and have your own family scavenger hunt. Don’t forget binoculars to see animal friends from a distance. Pack up a simple picnic lunch and snacks too.

Vegan Diets By Lauren Caggiano

Your mother told you to eat more veggies, so isn’t it about time you listened to her? Following a vegan diet can be a boon to a woman’s health in ways you might not have considered. risk. And if you have breast cancer, cutting those out of your diet can significantly increase your chances of fighting it.” The same can be said of cholesterol. Animal products like eggs and cheese are known to elevate levels of bad cholesterol, while plants can actually boost the good kind and lower the lipoproteins at the same time.

Heather Dahman Heather Dahman, a certified vegan lifestyle coach/educator and owner of The Veg Academy, helps people make the transition to such a diet. She said now is an especially great time to make some changes in light of the recent meat shortages. Beyond those circumstances, Dahman said going vegan can pay dividends in terms of prevention.

You also can’t overlook factors like quality of life, longevity and even anti-aging. “Fruits and vegetables do a lot to fight free radicals that cause aging,” Dahman said. “At my age, I am wanting to eat better, look better and age better and a vegan diet can help with that.” And the best part? You don’t have to go vegan overnight to experience results. Dahman herself switched from eating animal products to adopting a vegetarian and ultimately a vegan diet. How to best proceed can be a personal decision. In her words, “some people are just

Regardless of how you make the shift, Dahman stresses doing it intentionally. While she’s a lifestyle coach, she’s not a doctor or nutritionist. That said, she recommends making your healthcare providers aware of your lifestyle change and monitoring important markers if you have pre-existing health conditions. For example, she works with a client who has diabetes, so it’s important that she works with her doctor to adjust medications as needed. In addition to medical experts, Daham recommends looking to the vegan community for help and inspiration. The Internet is a great resource for recipes and helpful tips to make the transition. There are other resources that might hit closer to home, literally. “I always suggest finding your (local vegan) community,” she said. “On Facebook, we have the Fort Wayne Vegans & Vegetarians group. Just getting to know other people who follow the same diet can be so helpful.” a

A vegan diet is also heart healthy, especially in tandem with an overall healthy lifestyle. Doctors say those who adopt a low-fat, plantbased diet, get daily exercise, avoid tobacco and manage stress have the best chance of reversing heart disease.

ready to go all in. For some, the change is a response to health issues, and they need to cut out animal products.” For others, they may need to clean up their diet so going whole food, plant-based can be a means to that end.

INDIANA BEACHES

shutterstock.com

By Cathy Shouse

Summer usually means vacations, but getting the message that we ought to stay closer to home this year doesn’t need to be a deal breaker. If you’re looking for a beach getaway, Indiana has some excellent options. No airplane reservations needed. Not even a hotel room, unless you want one. Who knows? Maybe changing it up and taking a few smaller excursions will be just the ticket. We’ve rounded up some potential destinations for you.

The Indiana Dunes The Indiana Dunes and surrounding areas are worth a look—and maybe even multiple trips. At around two-and-a-half hours driving time from Fort Wayne, you can hit the road early and make a day trip of it. In February 2019, the name changed to Indiana Dunes National Park, upgrading it to national park status, and 2,124,285 visitors came that year. Communications Director Michelle Senderhauf said the vast areas to explore can take some sorting out, since there is also the Indiana Dunes State Park in the area, which has 16 miles of trails, including 552 vertical feet to climb. “There are nine total beaches,” Senderhauf said. “Some are at the west and east of the state park. 24

| JULY GLO 2020 |

For the most up to date information, visit https://www.nps.gov/indu/status.htm We’ve got a beach parking information hotline (phone: 219-395-1003) and recommend calling ahead because the lots can fill to capacity at peak times. The State Park entry fee is $7 for in-state vehicles, but everything is free in the National Park except for West Beach, which costs $6 per vehicle. West Beach may be worth the price because it has beaches and trails to hike and also a huge parking lot of approximately 600 parking spaces, which almost never fills up.” Shorter trips deserve as much planning as longer ones, since time is at a premium. Think of heading to the Dunes like going to Disney, only you’re potentially seeing 1,960 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and vascular plants, instead of Mickey Mouse and friends. Bring along a cooler and eat outdoors at one of the many picnic tables. Take a reading break on the sand under your beach umbrella. Tuck in a Frisbee, your canvas chairs, and a ball and mitt. Or arrange to kayak, just be aware of your skill level and don’t choose a water trail that feeds out into Lake Michigan where tides can rise unexpectedly. “It’s not for a beginner,” Senderhauf warned about Lake Michigan. “Remember we have great local parks, too, like Coffee Creek Watershed Preserve in Chesterton.” Or head up north to Canoe Country in Daleville where they’ll put you in a canoe in White River and pick you up. Sometimes shade and water views are a great alternative to sand.

“It’s just relaxing,” said Matt Rust at the Anderson Madison County Visitors Bureau. “That’s what’s great about it. You can do different trips, depending on how much time you have.”

FAT TRANSFER Some patients want a more "permanent" or longer lasting solution to volume loss. Instead of using filler, in this patient, fat was taken from the legs. The fat was purified and platelet rich plasma was added to it. It was then placed in the areas around the eyes and cheeks. After one year, the results are evident. The eye brows are elevated, the tear troughs and region under the eyes are filled out and more youthful.

BROW LIFT Many patients tell me in their consultation that they feel happy, but friends and family tell them they look sad or angry. The majority of the time, both the eye brows and eyelids need lifted to alleviate this aliment. Occasionally, as in this patient, simply lifting the eye brows will relieve the heaviness of the lids as well.

"He is kind, empathetic, knowledgeable and confident in his skill. I would refer and recommend him to anyone. So happy to have met him." -Barbara B.

ALL ABOUT YOU | Glo-roscopes

glo-roscopes By Julie Young

Cancer (June 21 - July 22) Although they rarely go in for contact sports due to their sensitive nature, Cancers are tough as nails when the pressure is on. You excel at table tennis and you know it is serious stuff. Keep your eye on the ball and you will always come out ahead.

Leo (July 23 - August 22) Get ready to kick some grass, Leo! As a strong, quick thinker and someone who is extremely popular, what sport could be better for you than soccer? With fans throughout the world, it is the perfect spotlight for a fame monster such as you. Watch out for those red cards though.

Virgo (August 23 - September 22)

Capricorn (December 22 - January 19) You are goal oriented, stubborn and one who eschews team sports. This makes tennis the perfect option for you. Not only do you like the back-and-forth nature of the game, but also like boxing, you are in it until you win it, and it takes an extra something special to achieve the highest levels.

Aquarius (January 20 - February 18) As an artistic and creative type who is unpredictable and does their best work under pressure, basketball would be the perfect Olympic event for you. Your dream team would include all of the greats who can work their magic while keeping the other team on their toes. Never be afraid of the shot clock!

Pisces (February 19 - March 20)

With a knack for eye-catching detail and creativity that captures everyone’s attention, you could have been a better diver than Greg Louganis. Find a fellow fearless Virgo this month and it could be a match made in heaven.

Anyone who is part fish belongs in the water, so it should come as no surprise that swimming is your sport. With your team behind you, you will school the other athletes no matter if it’s a lap race or water polo. Collaboration will be the key this month so cull the talents of your co-workers to get the job done.

Libra (September 23 - October 22)

Aries (March 21 - April 19)

Although you are adventurous, you hate making a decision, which is why the modern pentathlon is perfect for someone who likes a little bit of everything. Go to an international festival when you can and experience the culture of distant lands. It is perfect for someone as courageous as you.

Scorpio (October 23 - November 21)

As someone who is impulsive and prone to taking risks, you could have gone for the gold in gymnastics. No matter what twists and turns life hands you this month, you will stick the landing while showing off your personal style.

Taurus (April 20 - May 20)

Scorpios rarely go looking for a fight, but they don’t back down from a challenge. You’re just like a fencer in this respect. This month, you will be given a big project to tackle. Rise to the occasion.

Did you play field hockey in high school? It wouldn’t surprise us. After all, you are goal-oriented, stubborn and unafraid to strike first, especially when anything is standing in the way of your dreams and ambitions. Remember that there may be an opponent willing to strike back.

Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21)

Gemini (May 21 - June 20)

When your sign’s hallmark is a bow and arrow, it should come as no surprise that your favorite Olympic sport is archery. When taking your aim at a goal this month, be sure it’s not a moving target. Don’t let it get away from you but take your time and do it right. The bull’s-eye is yours to claim.

No sport shows off the concept of twinning as well as synchronized swimming and it’s no surprise that it is one of your favorites to watch every four years. You always notice when one of the team seems a little off and you always look for an attractive combination of difficulty and style. It’s also what you look for in a partner. a
