COVID-19 REPORT THE PALACE THEATRES DURING THE PANDEMIC MARCH 2020-JUNE 2021
FOREWARD On March 13, 2020, we closed our doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Over a year later, we are proud to say that the Palace Theatre Trust has survived. Our success through this time is due to the hard work and dedication of our staff, the loyalty and generosity of our patrons, and the support from local, state, and federal government. Because of the belief from our community, we are excited to enter a new chapter at the Palace Theatres with a renewed sense of gratitude, responsibility, and positivity. Although we missed the usual excitement in our venues - a bright stage filled with actors, a bustling lobby, students eager to rehearse their latest show - we made the most of having empty theatres. A lot has happened since March 13, 2020, even while our venues were dark. Throughout this time, we continued to invest in our historic theatre and affiliate venues by completing a number of large-scale restorations and improvements. We provided safe entertainment for our patrons both in person and online. We worked to remain relevant and active in our community. We stayed positively engaged with our Palace Youth Theatre students. We continued to plan for the future with the steadfast certainty that we would return - better than ever. As we look back on our accomplishments and perseverance, I want to thank all who have continued to support the Palace Theatres. Our reopening would not have been possible without you. ABOUT THE CHILDREN'S SUMMER SERIES The Palace hires a Summer Resident Company to perform a different children’s theatre production each week throughout the summer. Children's Summer Series shows are geared toward young audiences, and provide accessible, creative theatre productions on the historic Palace stage. The Summer Series usually brings in over 23,000 attendees total. This year, we sold 3,870 tickets. SOCIALLY DISTANCED CONCERT SERIES AUGUST 14-SEPTEMBER 12, 2020
In late summer of 2020, we teamed up with our neighbors to produce the “Socially Distanced Concert Series” at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. In collaboration with the NH Fisher Cats, Intown Manchester, and the Manchester Parks and Recreation Division, the Palace provided safe, outdoor entertainment to the community. With a stage in center field and seating options on the outfield grass and throughout the stadium bowl, Delta Dental Stadium provided ample room for guests to safely enjoy a summer night at the ballpark. We sold 3,797 tickets total. After our success with the Children’s Summer Series, we began our season under the same strict guidelines (see pages 17-22). VIRTUAL SERIES
DECEMBER 21, 2020-MAY 28, 2021 Beginning in December 2020, the Palace, like many performance venues, shifted to the virtual sphere. We kicked off our St. Mary’s Bank Virtual Series by streaming past productions of A Christmas Carol. After the success of A Christmas Carol, the Palace produced and live streamed weekly virtual performances every Friday night. These virtual performances ranged from past original productions to cabaret style shows featuring our PYT students. We leveraged our established following and ample resources to support local artists and organizations. The Palace collaborated with Brooks Young Band, Piccola Opera, and NSquared Dance Company, among others. Tickets were $15 per “household.” One ticket provided one streaming link. All Virtual Series performances were offered at zero cost to our members to show our appreciation for their continued support.

PALACE YOUTH THEATRE KEEPING SPIRITS AND COMMUNICATION HIGH
Our Palace Youth Theatre students did not lose any spirit or passion throughout the pandemic and we made sure to celebrate and support their hard work in every way possible. We knew how important it was to stay in touch with our PYTers. We found creative ways to keep spirits high within our youth community. We hosted a “car parade,” sent care packages in the mail, doubled down on social media, and dove into the virtual sphere.

Beginning in April 2020, PYT launched “PYT @ Home:” virtual curriculum for students to continue their training from the safety of their own homes. We even hosted virtual vacation camps!
This online format was a new challenge for our youth performers, sharpening their skills in independent motivation and perseverance. PYT coordinated exciting classes taught by instructors and working professionals across the globe, including performers in New York City, Florida, and even Australia!

IN-PERSON PERFORMANCES When it was safe to meet in person, PYT returned to live classes and performances. All class sizes and casts were kept to under 20 students. Social distancing was required at all times and masks were mandatory during rehearsals and performances. Our students took to the stage with an increased passion and appreciation for PYT.

FUNDRAISING AND GRANTS While our normal revenue streams were unavailable, the Palace relied on the generosity of individual donors, local businesses, and numerous public organizations. From March 13, 2020-June 1, 2021, the Palace raised almost $200,000 in fundraising efforts and was awarded eleven grants.

These updates will preserve the beauty of the historic Palace Theatre for years to come, heighten the patron experience in all venues, and expand the possibility of theatre and entertainment in New Hampshire.

SPECIAL PROJECTS DINNER AND A SHOW
January 2021-March 2021: The Palace reached out to our restaurant sponsors to film the “Dinner and a Show” series. In each episode of this series, one of our partner restaurants presented their signature dish and cocktail. We aired these episodes before our virtual shows and on all social media platforms.
COMMUNITY APPRECIATION
People of the Palace - January 2021-June 2021: This social media campaign was another way for the Palace to connect with our community and share our appreciation for the “People of the Palace.” Each week, we interviewed a different individual. We published an article and accompanying graphic on our social media platforms. These features included usher volunteers, performers, Palace members, and employees. PYT Performer of the Month - December 2020present: We also launched our PYT Performer of the Month program. Each month, we featured a PYT student on our social media accounts.
BLACK HISTORY MONTH
February 15-19, 2021: The Palace was proud to produce an educational resource during Black History Month. The Palace staged and filmed dramatic readings of two “Reader’s Theatre” historical plays written by Mackoweicki Lewis. These plays were made available to educators at no cost. Over eighty classrooms across the country utilized this resource. February 1-28, 2021: We used our social media platform to celebrate Black history in theatre and dance. This initiative deepened our commitment to recognizing, honoring, and appreciating Black brilliance in music, theatre, dance, and beyond.

HEALTH AND SAFETY GUIDELINES PATRONS
Health and safety were the Palace’s top priorities. In collaboration with state and local health officials, the Palace reopened with great caution and care under the following patron guidelines.
LIMITED CAPACITY AND SOCIAL DISTANCING
Seating was under 50% capacity and blocked off for 6-foot social distancing Children’s Summer Series as well as Professional Series performances were held at limited capacity, 230 seats maximum All performances and shows at the Rex were held at limited capacity, 100 seats maximum 6-foot social distancing markers were placed in the lobbies, on the sidewalks in front of the theaters, in front of all bars, and in front of the box office
HEALTH SCREENING
Upon arrival, employees greeted patrons alongside pull-ups with a health questionnaire. Before entering the facility, patrons had to answer “NO” to the following questions: Have you been in close contact with someone who is suspected or confirmed to have had COVID-19 in the last 14 days? (NOTE: Healthcare workers caring for COVID-19 patients while wearing appropriate personal protective equipment should answer “no” to this question) Have you had a fever or felt feverish in the last 72 hours? Are you experiencing any respiratory symptoms, including a runny nose, sore throat, cough, or difficulty breathing? Are you experiencing any new muscle aches, significant tiredness, or chills? Have you had any new changes in your sense of taste or smell? Have you traveled in the past 14 days either: Internationally, By cruise ship, or Domestically outside of NH, VT, or ME on public transportation (i.e., bus, train, plane, etc.)?

CONTACTLESS EXPERIENCE
Touchless ticket scanning devices were utilized by patrons to scan their tickets on a personal device or printout Printed playbills were replaced with QR codes to scan and access virtual playbills No cash was accepted and tickets were distributed via email Cast meet and greets were suspended Special Marquee Room benefits were temporarily suspended for our Members. Because of this inconvenience, we added three complimentary months to all Members’ yearly memberships
SANITATION
Signs were posted in bathrooms reminding patrons to wash their hands Plexiglass barriers were constructed at the bars and the box office ticketing windows Hand sanitizer stations were provided throughout the facility Seating and high-touch areas were sanitized before/after every performance At the conclusion of the performance, the downstairs fire doors were opened to allow more space for exiting the theatre
MASK POLICY
All patrons, staff, and volunteers (over the age of 2) had to wear face coverings when entering and exiting the facility, waiting in lines, transiting to/from the theatre and to/from the restrooms. Face coverings were strongly recommended when seated and watching the performance. Employees were posted at each doorway to ensure patrons were wearing a mask prior to entry that properly covered their mouth and nose

Additional guidelines for employees included: All Board of Directors meetings and some manager meetings were held on Zoom All staff meetings were held in socially distanced theatre Masks were mandatory in the office Daily temperature checks and health questionnaire were required to be completed by each employee every work day prior to entering the offices Hand sanitizer stations were placed throughout the workplace offices Employees worked at socially distanced stations within office spaces Air filtration systems were placed in all administrative offices Office water bubbler was rescinded and no communal food was allowed

Guidelines for professional artists as stipulated in performer contracts included:
BEFORE CONTRACT:
If traveling from outside of New England, the artist agreed to quarantine for two weeks before coming to the Palace Theatre Artist agreed to take a COVID-19 test one week before the start of the rehearsal process and provided the results to the Palace Theatres staff
DURING REHEARSAL PROCESS:
Upon entry, the artist had their temperature taken and was asked several health screening questions Artist agreed to wear a face mask during all rehearsals unless distanced at least eight feet from other artists for recording purposes Rehearsal rooms/spaces and props were cleaned and sanitized before each rehearsal and the air was “scrubbed” after each rehearsal Throughout the duration of the contract, artist agreed to abstain from higher risk activities per CDC guidelines (bars, gyms, indoor restaurant seating, travel outside of NH, MA, ME, or VT) No guests were allowed in the cast house at any time

TECH/PERFORMANCE PROCESS:
During performances at the theatre, Artist entered and exited through side stage door and refrained from using public areas of the theatre (i.e. box office, bathrooms) Upon entry, the artist had their temperature taken and was asked several health screening questions Each artist was given a private dressing room Microphones were sanitized before every use Technical crew and front of the house crew were kept to a minimum and were required to wear face coverings at all times Cast meet and greets were cancelled No guests were allowed backstage or in dressing rooms Artists agreed to wear a face covering anywhere outside of the their dressing room When exiting the stage, artists went to an assigned "pod" divided with plexiglass barriers (see photo below)
