Iceboat racing has been a popular sport for many years, but the competition was intense in the middle of the nineteenth century, especially on the Hudson River. In 1869 Commodore John E. Roosevelt (President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s uncle) had one of the largest Hudson River iceboats built - called “Icicle.” She was the largest and fastest iceboat on the river in that era.
